Important stuff from this week

Fugu15 Max Public Betas 5, 6, & 7 released

Fifth Fugu15 Max public beta released by opa334.

Opa334 seeded a fifth public beta of the Fugu15 Max jailbreak for arm64e devices running iOS & iPadOS 15.0-15.4.1 on Wednesday, and then a sixth public beta on Thursday with small bug fixes.

The fifth public beta introduced a bevy of bug fixes and improvements, bringing the jailbreak one-step closer to a final public release, however it still needs some user-friendliness to be incorporated before that happens.

You can learn more about what’s new in the fifth Fugu15 Max beta in our full news post.

We also touched on the much smaller seventh beta in a separate news post.

Linus Henze CVE-2023-28206 bug PoC

iPhone hacked matrix.

Security researcher and Fugu15 jailbreak creator Linus Henze published a proof of concept for CVE-2023-28206, a kernel vulnerability that Apple patched in iOS & iPadOS 16.4.1.

According to Apple, this vulnerability may have allowed an app to achieve arbitrary kernel code execution.

You can find out more about Henze’s PoC in our full news post.

Opa334 comments on iOS 16.4 bug PoC

Matrix code hacked iPhone.

TrollStore developer opa334, who is also developing the Fugu15 Max jailbreak for arm64e devices running iOS & iPadOS 15.0-15.4.1, responded to Linus Henze’s latest PoC for a bug affecting iOS & iPadOS 16.4 and older.

The moral to the story is that while a PoC is important, it’s not the only thing required to get efforts moving for a jailbreak. In fact, it’s just a puzzle piece.

You can learn more about the involved mechanisms in our full news post and read about what opa334 had to say.

What if iOS 17 drops the iPhone X?

Apple iPhone X.

There have been conflicting reports that iOS & iPadOS 17 could drop checkm8 bootrom exploit-vulnerable devices altogether, a move that would seriously stymie jailbreaking.

As we know, the checkm8-based palera1n jailbreak is the only one available for iOS & iPadOS 16, and there hasn’t been any news of any new jailbreaks for newer arm64e devices (iPhone XS and later) beyond that.

You can learn more about the ramifications of this in our full analysis post.

AltStore updated to version 1.6.3

AltStore banner.

The AltStore sideloading app for iPhones and iPads was updated to version 1.6.3 on Wednesday with minor bug fixes and improvements.

You can find out more about what’s new and how to upgrade in our full news post.

Mochi15 Lock Screen media UI customizer

Mochi15 customized Lock Screen media interface.

The new Mochi15 jailbreak tweak brings unique new UI customization options to the Lock Screen’s Now Playing media widget on jailbroken iOS & iPadOS 15 devices.

Limneos updates tweaks for rootless

Elias Limneos Dynamic Peninsula tweak.

Elias Limneos started rolling out support for rootless with many of his most popular jailbreak tweaks this week, including BioProtect XS and Dynamic Peninsula.

You can learn more about this change in our full news post.

iOS 16.4 unsigned

iOS 16 firmware downgrade

Apple stopped signing iOS & iPadOS 16.4 on Friday, a move that prevents most iPhone and iPad users from downgrading from the newer iOS & iPadOS 16.4.1 firmware.

You can find out more about the implications of this change in our full news post.
