Apple airs new ‘Strength’ TV ad focusing on fitness apps and accessories

Apple has just uploaded a new TV ad called "Strength" to its YouTube channel, centered upon the various health and fitness accessories for the iPhone 5s. The one-minute spot debuted just a few hours ago on national television, during the first period of the Stanley Cup Finals on NBC between the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers. The upbeat commercial is backed by a song called “Chicken Fat” by Robert Preston, released in 1961 to get schoolchildren to do more daily exercise…

Here’s what it’s like to install iOS 8 [Video]

I'm in a hotel room Kyoto, Japan right now and it's 5 am in the morning, but I wouldn't miss this for anything. Like you, I just got finished watching the WWDC keynote, and I was blown away by what Apple unveiled.

Of course, there was no new hardware revealed at WWDC, but that was pretty much expected. What we didn't expect, was to have our socks knocked off by iOS 8, as it seemed that this year was the year of OS X Yosemite.

It was, indeed, a big year for Yosemite, but I believe iOS 8 stole the show. Thinks like third-party keyboard support, the Health app, quick reply, and Inter-app communication stole the show.

With all of that said, I wanted to bring you a first video showcasing the install process for iOS 8. If you've ever installed iOS 7, then you pretty much know what to expect here, as its very similar. Check out our install video, and check back for more breakdowns of the new features offered in iOS 8.

Five things the Galaxy S5 does better than the iPhone 5s… and vice versa

The Galaxy S5 has been my go-to device and my daily driver over the last month or so. I know that may seem like blasphemy since I write for iDownloadBlog, but I have a lot of reasons for doing so.

For starters, I wanted to become more familiar with the competition. I already had a good sense about Samsung's offerings and Android in general, but nothing can replace hands-on usage and the balanced perspective that comes with that.

If I wanted to seriously be able to take an objective look at Apple and at Samsung, and at iOS and Android, then I would need to have a better understanding of competing devices. What better device to help develop such an understanding than what is arguably the iPhone's biggest competitor, the Galaxy S5?

Since I've acquired one, I've mostly been enjoying my time with the GS5. In fact, I've traveled to South Korea, home of Samsung, which has made my perspective about the whole competition even more well-rounded. With all of this in mind, I wanted to compile a list of some of the things that I enjoy about the Samsung Galaxy S5. These are five things that I believe that the GS5 does better than Apple's flagship iPhone 5s. Afterwards, I'll do a reverse comparison, and tell you what I think the iPhone does better. Want to see which items made the cut? Check inside for the details.

RadioShack offering 16GB iPhone 5s for $79, 5c for $29

RadioShack has just given us the heads up that it has begun a new iPhone promotion. Starting today, the electronics retailer will be offering the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c for AT&T, Verizon and Sprint at its 'lowest in-store prices ever.'

Folks looking to snag a newer model iPhone on one of these carriers can pick up a 16GB 5s for $79.99 (with a two-year contract of course) or a 16GB 5c for $29.99. And if you trade in a working iPhone 4s, you could get either phone free...

iOS 7.1.1 jailbreak for iPhone 5s showed on video

It looks like there is no shortage of jailbreak for iOS 7.1.1, with i0n1c recently teasing one, shortly followed by winocm. Georgia Tech student Yeongjin Jang is now the third person to come forward with a video demonstrating a jailbreak. Maybe more impressive than anything we've seen so far, Jang was able to jailbreak an iPhone 5s.

The jailbreak has seemingly been confirmed by i0n1c as well as our own sources (which is why we took longer than usual to report about this jailbreak)...

Verizon announces VoLTE rollout for later this year, iOS 8 expected to support it

Verizon Wireless has announced the roll out of its Voice over LTE technology - better known as VoLTE - will begin across the US later this year.

The new technology will move Verizon's LTE service past data and will offer an HD Voice experience, using the AMR-wideband standard. "This solution provides the best voice quality available now and allows for future interoperability with others using the standard," Verizon claims.

Size comparison: 3D printed 5.5-inch iPhone 6 mockup vs iPhone 5s

Another day, another iPhone 6 dummy. Based on purportedly leaked design drawings published last month, enthusiast Hidenori Satou has used a MakerBot Replicator 2 3D Printer to produce a mockup of Apple's upcoming 5.5-inch handset. The dummy unit is rather crude and as such is used to highlight the size difference between the current four-inch iPhone 5 and the upcoming 5.5-incher...

Design comparison: final iPhone 6 mockup vs iPhone 5s vs fifth-gen iPod touch

With everyone and their brother 3D printing iPhone 6 mockups, virtually every single day brings another iPhone 6 "leak" that wants to go viral. There's just too much stuff proliferating out there so iDownloadBlog usually only covers the material we specifically deem newsworthy.

This would typically entail photos and footage that bring something new to the conversation, be it a never-before-seen angle, an interesting design choice or other curious detail.

Today's video is no different.

Created by an Italian enthusiast blog, it pits an unusually detailed physical iPhone 6 mockup against the iPhone 5s and the fifth-generation iPod touch, showing the supposed design differences from various angles...
