SwitchSpring: a new jailbreak tweak that brings respring control to the app switcher

And...let the inevitable deluge of new jailbreak apps and tweaks begin! SwitchSpring is a brand new jailbreak tweak that just appeared on Cydia today. Keep in mind that there still may be some underlying compatibility issues with jailbreak tweaks as all of the bugs and updates get ironed out from yesterday's surprise iOS 7 jailbreak release, but things are slowly moving towards that direction.

I was able to test out SwitchSpring on my jailbroken iPod touch 5th generation, and it worked just fine. This is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to easily kill all running apps or respring your device right from the app switcher. Of course, I've made a video walkthrough showcasing how SwitchSpring works in action, and I encourage you to take a look.

Square Enix posts trailer for upcoming Final Fantasy VI port

Back in October, Square Enix director Takashi Tokita announced that his team was working on a mobile version of its popular Final Fantasy VI title. The game, he said, will be landing on iOS and Android platforms “this winter.”

Unfortunately, that’s about all we know right now, and the winter timeframe means we may not see anything until mid-March. But we have seen a couple of screenshots from the game, and this week Square Enix posted a trailer...

As we just told you, the evad3rs have released a new jailbreak tool called evasi0n7, and it allows you to easily jailbreak iOS 7. The good news is that the hack works with all flavors of iOS 7, which includes iOS 7.0.1, iOS 7.0.2, iOS 7.0.3, 7.0.4, 7.0.5, and 7.0.6. (no jailbreak for iOS 7.1 at this time).

Apple has tonight begun airing its first new commercial in nearly a month. As you'd imagine in mid-December, the spot carries a holiday theme and focuses on the new iPhone 5s handset and its AirPlay feature.

The ad shows a teenage boy capturing his family participating in various holiday activities like decorating the Christmas tree and playing in the snow on his iPhone 5s, and then playing it for them on their TV set...

It's been a while since we've been treated to a compelling concept regarding Apple's next iPhone. SET Solution, which specializes in visual effects, 3D graphics and animation and video editing saw to that with a pair of rather incredible video concepts that try to envision Apple's next 'c' iPhone, the iPhone 6c, and the ultra-thin iPhablet dubbed iPhone Air.

As its name suggests, Italy-based SET thinks the next major iPhone revision should be ultra-thin and of course incorporate Apple's Touch ID fingerprint scanner. I've included both videos for your viewing pleasure right after the break so have a look and join us in comments...

Tim Cook talks Apple, equality and more in Auburn Lifetime Achievement Award speech

Apple's CEO Tim Cook was presented a lifetime achievement award from Auburn University at an event last week in New York. Cook graduated from the Alabama-based university in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering.

The CEO was of course on hand to accept the award, and as usual, gave quite the speech. We've got the video of the speech after the fold, where you can watch Cook talk about Apple, the progression of human equality in the United States, and more...

The Everything is a Remix video series by New York-based filmmaker Kirby Ferguson plays on the remix culture and its key mantra that everything around us is a remix of previously made stuff and that all original material builds off of and remixes previously existing material.

Facebook app gets auto-play feature for News Feed videos, and there’s not much you can do about it

Facebook updated its iOS client this afternoon, bringing the app to version 6.8. The update is a small one, but it does include one significant—and likely controversial—change: video clips will now play automatically in your News Feed.

Now, Facebook has been testing this feature since September, and I've had it for a while. And although the videos aren't extremely annoying, I was hoping they'd make one change before the public launch: give us a way to turn them off...

Yahoo buys video startup QuikIO

In the past year or so, Yahoo's been bolstering up its video and rich content expertise by acquiring smaller startups left and right. The company kicked off the acquisition spree by buying the mobile news startup Summly for $30 million and the #2 blogging platform Tumblr for north of $1 billion. Soon after, Yahoo paid $50 million for the cool iPhone video app, Qwiki.

In the ensuing months, Yahoo snapped up the DreamWorks-funded video-sharing app Ptch and announced that the New York Times technology columnist David Pogue and American television journalist Katie Couric are joining its A-team of premium content producers.

Today, it was reported that Yahoo in another acqui-hire move bought the cross-platform video startup called QuikIO...

VLC 2.1.2 is out with experimental decoding of HEVC and WebM/VP9

VLC, the free cross-platform desktop media player, has been through some turmoil as VideoLan, which manages the project, has undergone reorganization as the multinational development team now spans twenty nations.

The open source media player made its App Store debut back in October 2010 as one of the first iPhone apps that could render media file formats unsupported by iTunes and iOS. Unfortunately, the app got pulled in January 2011 over licensing issues.

The problems came down to the GNU General Public License (GLP) requirements as developer Rémi Denis-Courmont, lead contributor to the VLC project, filed a licensing claim based on the code he had contributed to the project.

Following a two-year hiatus, VLC made its way back into the App Store earlier this summer (you can download it for free). And today, VideoLan has pushed an update to VLC for Mac and Windows desktops, bringing a lot of fixes and a cool experimental decoding of media files in HEVC and WebM/VP9 file formats...

Here's something awesome. The Grammy award-winning artist LeAnn Rimes has tasked her crew with filming the entire video for Gasoline and Matches, a single from her latest album, Spitfire, on Apple's iPhone, the artist has confirmed.

They opted for the Apple smartphone for footage and stop-motion animation because that particular pocket camera is "easy, affordable and portable" versus your average filmmaker's heavy gear. The result is nothing short of astonishing, as Rimes' music video included after the break attests for itself...
