Starbucks, Spotify ink big deal that gives employees Premium subscription

While it's been a partner of iTunes in the past, Starbucks announced on Monday a big partnership with Spotify that will link its 7,000 stores in the US and 10 million My Starbucks Rewards loyalty members with Spotify’s 60 million global users.

Most notably, Starbucks' 150,000 US-based employees will receive a free Spotify Premium subscription in the coming weeks, followed shortly thereafter by employees in Canada and the UK. Spotify Premium is priced at $10 per month.

Music labels ostensibly applying pressure on Spotify to ditch free service for 3-month trial

In another sign that Apple may have conspired with major record labels to kill free music streaming, Digital Music News is now reporting that both Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment are pressuring Spotify, the leading subscription streaming-music service, to end its free, ad-supported service and instead limit music lovers to a three-month free trial.

As previously reported, Apple's alleged backing of these efforts have prompted scrutiny from the United States Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission and the European Union’s Competition Commission into Apple's business practices in the music space.

Spotify could move into video later this month as Apple targets streaming music

Spotify, the world's leading music-streaming service with sixty million listeners on a free tier and fifteen million accounts on its $9.99 per month tier, could start integrating video into its service as early as this month, according to a report published Friday by The Wall Street Journal.

A video-streaming service should complement Spotify's music platform. The company reportedly has the likes of Facebook and YouTube in its sight, the latter working on a paid subscription service of its own.

Google's Music Key allows Play Music subscribers to watch ad-free music videos on YouTube and Jay Z's Tidal includes access to music videos in its subscription and will soon live-stream concerts and related events to users. Rdio briefly experimented with video, too, but pulled that service over lack of interest.

Earlier today, the privately owned Swedish startup sent out invites for a May 20 press event in New York City ahead of Apple's Beats Music relaunch at WWDC next month.

How to control Spotify with Siri

As most of you guys know, I'm a huge Spotify fan. I've been using the service ever since it appeared on US shores, and it's by far the best music streaming service in my opinion.

One thing that I've always missed about Spotify when compared to the stock Music app, is the ability to control my tunes via Siri. With the stock Music app, you can use Siri to play any song in your library, or play a music station using iTunes Radio. Spotify? Not so much.

That all changed a few days ago when developer Zaid Elkurdi released Assistant+. With a little finagling, you can get Assistant+ to interface with Spotify on a limited basis. But with Zaid's new add-on called SpotifySiriControls, you can do a whole lot more.

Sony’s PlayStation Music goes live in 41 countries with Spotify integration

After years of trying to make a dent in the music space with its ill-fated services like Music Unlimited, Sony back in January threw in the towel by announcing a partnership with Spotify, the leading music-streaming service.

Monday, the Japanese company has delivered on that promise with the launch of the new PlayStation Music service with Spotify integration. Available on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 console as well as on Sony's Xperia smartphones and tablets, the service brings 30 million songs to users in 41 markets around the world.

Spotify announces Musixmatch lyrics integration in desktop apps and other goodies

Spotify, the world's top music-streaming service, on Thursday announced its desktop apps will be soon getting Musixmatch-powered lyrics engine, making it easy for music lovers to access song lyrics on their Mac or Windows PCs and sing along to their favorite tracks.

In addition to Spotify integration, Musixmatch is also available as a standalone iPhone and iPad application, available at no cost in the App Store.

Spotify arriving to PlayStation as Sony axes its ill-fated Music Unlimited service

Sony has finally pulled the plug on its unsuccessful music-streaming service, Music Unlimited.

Destined to be shut down on March 29, 2015, it'll be succeeded by a new Sony service called PlayStation Music and based entirely on the Spotify service and its backend.

From the get-go, the new service will have full access to over 30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists on Spotify.

PlayStation Music will be debuting this Spring in 41 markets and be available on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles, as well as on the Xperia smartphones and tablets. Support for other mobile and desktop devices will be added at a later stage.

The leading music-streaming startup Spotify on Thursday announced a better way to preview music using new gestures in its iOS app. Dubbed Touch Preview, the feature allows music lovers to get a sneak peek of any playlist, song, album or artist by holding down their finger to start the music playing instantly.

“It means less time looking for the perfect music, and more time actually listening to it,” wrote the company.

Spotify4Me, the Spotify Notification Center widget for Mac

Ever since Apple updated iOS and OS X with the ability to add extensions to Notification Center, I’ve been all about the widgets. On my Mac, I’ve got weather widgets, to-do lists, countdowns, and package trackers. I love them. I want more.

Spotify4Me is a Notification Center extension that adds song skip and volume controls to your Today View. It may not do much, but what it does, it does right.
