Procreate Pocket gains pressure painting with 3D Touch, native Apple Watch app and more

Procreate Pocket, an iPhone and iPod touch edition of the drawing and illustration app that started out as an iPad-exclusive, was updated this morning with a bunch of 3D Touch goodies and other enhancements.

Procreate Pocket 1.6 includes support for pressure-sensitive painting with 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The refreshed app claims double the frame rate across all supported devices and includes an all-new native Apple Watch app on watchOS 2 that improves the battery life and responsiveness.

Apple Watch Sport goes on sale at Walmart

Best Buy, Target, and now...Walmart. Apple Watch is pretty much ubiquitous these days when it comes to American retail stores, and the addition of Walmart as an official retailer is just icing on the cake.

Granted, Apple Watch sales at Walmart are quite limited, with only the Sport model being offered, and further limitations have been placed on available colors.

Nonetheless, having the Apple Watch, in any incarnation, is a big deal and a big win for Apple and potential customers. It turns the visibility level of the popular wearable all the way to level 11.

GoPro releases companion Apple Watch app

I hope for your own sake that you're not one of those irresponsible guys who can be seen interacting with GoPro's mobile app on their smartphone while skating, parachuting or cycling. If you are, however, you might want to download GoPro's latest iPhone app which now includes a native Apple Watch app that lets you start and stop recording with a simple tap on your wrist.

Less time spent starring at the smartphone screen gives you more time to avoid those obstacles. What do you mean, you don't skate?

You'd be hard-pressed to find a deal that tops the $100 Apple Watch instant discount Best Buy is giving to its customers. The big box electronics retailer is offering the huge discount via its online store as well as in physical locations.

Discounts are being offered on all Apple Watch models that Best Buy carries, which include models from the entry-level Sport line (aluminum) and the mid-tier Apple Watch line (stainless steel). That means that you can score the 38mm Apple Watch Sport model, the cheapest watch that Apple sells, for a mere $249.

watchOS 2.1 for Apple Watch is out with new language support and bug fixes

In a flurry of software updates released today, Apple hasn't forgotten about the Apple Watch. The new watchOS 2.1 software update is available for your watch, bringing out new language support and bug fixes to improve your experience.

Available through the companion Watch app on your iPhone, the 57.1-megabyte download introduces an expanded support for system languages, adds support for right-to-left user interface, Siri dictation in Arabic and more.

Apple reportedly planning Apple Watch 2 media event in March 2016

Citing sources with knowledge of the plans, 9to5Mac is reporting that Apple is planning a media event in March of next year to unveil a second-generation Apple Watch, with the possible announcement of a rumored four-inch iPhone refresh in tow as well.

If true, the company would start shipping the second-generation watch in April, a year following the original model's debut in April of 2015.

Pedometer++ embraces Apple Watch in a big way

Pedometer++ is one of the best step-counting apps in the App Store, with its developer David Smith managing to keep it alive with meaningful updates. In fact, Apple's 2013 introduction of a dedicated motion coprocessor in iPhones that tracks movement in a power-friendly manner has helped breathe new life into Pedometer++.

Ever since the watch's April 2015 debut I've been wondering how the app would fit into my fitness routine.

My primary concern at the time was whether or not a dedicated step-counting app made sense given the Apple Watch's robust fitness and motion tracking capabilities.

But as it turns out, a bright future lies ahead of Pedometer++ and today's feature-packed update proves my point. The new version fully embraces the Apple Watch with a comprehensive, fluid and native watchOS 2 app, complications, more accurate data sync than Apple's Health app and more.

Apple honors World AIDS Day with (RED) apps, products, accessories and more

Apple logos on the company's retail stores around the world have turned bright red today, and that means one thing: it's honoring the World AIDS Day. In the App Store, Apple and (RED) joined forces with developer Supercell, with 100 percent of proceeds from customers who buy (RED) packs for Supercell's games going to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

And via its homepage at Apple.com, the company is inviting customers to help the initiative by purchasing (RED)-branded products like Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Watches and accessories such as Beats headphones, the Smart Cover for the iPad Air and the Smart Case for the iPad Air 2.

Hangouts for iOS now supports Apple Watch, gains quick-replying from notifications and more

Google Hangouts, the search giant's instant messaging and VoIP mobile client, was updated in the App Store last evening with several new features and refinements.

For starters, Apple Watch owners can now respond to instant messages received from other Hangout users directly on their wrist and also from the notification banner on their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad (provided they use iOS 9.1).

These hacks enable custom Apple Watch faces and 3D Touch gestures on iPad Pro via Apple Pencil

watchOS 2, the operating system powering Apple's wearable gizmo, includes support for third-party complications on select watch faces designed to support them.

But as far as watch faces themselves go, users are limited to a handful of built-in styles as Apple's software development kit (SDK) doesn't allow for downloadable watch faces yet.

As it turns out, a quick hack that prolific iOS developer Hamza Sood posted on Twitter back in August (no, it didn't fly under our radar) gets around Apple's limitations and permits unofficial development and installation of custom faces for Apple's wearable device.

And earlier this morning, Sood also posted another hack which brings 3D Touch Peek and Pop gestures to the iPad Pro via the Apple Pencil's pressure sensing technology.
