More Details on Cydia for Mac

We recently reported that the creator of Cydia, Jay "saurik" Freeman, is close to releasing an official version of Cydia for the Mac. We speculated on if it was really necessary, and if it is important enough to thrive on a desktop ecosystem.

This "Mac Cydia" would seem to be Freeman's direct attempt at the jailbreak, unfiltered version of the new Mac App Store and OS X Lion. Since the news of a Mac Cydia, there have been more details shared from Freeman himself about the goals and features of the OS X version of Cydia...

Apple Quietly Removed the Stealthy Jailbreak Detection in iOS 4.2.1

According to certain device management vendors, Apple, without an explanation of any kind, has dropped its own jailbreak detection API from iOS no less than six months after releasing it. The reasons behind this decision are a mystery, as Apple has declined to comment on the decision to abandon the API in the release of iOS 4.2.1.

Apple's API let MDM (Master Data Management) applications access core information about the version of iOS running on any given device. Basically, the jailbreak detection API allowed certain applications to ask an iOS system if it had been compromised. Surprisingly, in the newly released iOS 4.2.1, that API is nowhere to be seen...

Cydia for Macs to Go Live “Within Weeks”

With the recently announced Mac App store on the horizon -- which brings an iOS-esque store to Mac OS X platforms -- Cydia creator Jay "Saurik" Freeman plans to strike while the iron is hot.

That could only mean one thing, a Cydia Store for Macs; let's just call it Mac Cydia for simplicity's sake. But the real question is, what use will Mac users have for a Cydia store?

StayOpened Keeps the App Store From Closing While You Shop

Don't you just hate it when you're in a store, and a clerk comes on the P.A. system, and blurts out, "This store will be closing in 15 minutes"?

That's how I feel every time I purchase an app from the App Store. It closes, and I'm not even finished shopping! Wouldn't it be nice, if we could keep the App Store opened  when downloading an app? That's the premise of StayOpened, a new tweak for jailbroken iPhones...

Filopanti Does Simple and Pretty Time Zone Conversion

Time zones are a pain. There are 40 time zones in the world, and 4 in the United States. There are so many instances when it's necessary to know what time it is somewhere far away. I've been looking for any easy way to convert time zones on the iPhone for a long time, and Filopanti fits the bill perfectly.

"Filopanti" is named after Quirico Filopanti, who was the first person in history to propose a worldwide system of time zones in 1858. Filopanti's interface is elegant and dead easy to use. With Filopanti, you'll never be wondering what time it is across the country or on the other side of the world...

iOS 4.3 Rumored to Have December Release

We've barely had time to get to know the newly released iOS 4.2, and there are already rumors circulating that iOS 4.3 will be released as soon as next month. In particular, two sources have weighed in on a possible iOS 4.3 release for the not so distant future.

The rumor mill began with some words from John Gruber about Rupert Murdoch's new, mobile-centric newspaper called "The Daily." Apparently, Murdoch has been forming a mobile-specific news publication under the umbrella of News Corp. This new publication is rumored to deliver news through a subscription system in Apple's App Store...

5 Awesome iPhone Task Manager Apps

After positive feedback on my last roundup, I've decided to start a weekly (possibly bi-weekly) list of "5 Awesome iPhone ___________ Apps" articles. To reiterate from last week, the 5 apps I will mention in this list are not jailbreak apps, so everyone can use them.

Each of these apps are fantastic task managers for your iPhone. They have their own fortes and negatives, but, in my opinion, they're all deserving of the word "awesome." Hope you enjoy...

Price Check allows you to instantly check the price of something with a variety of search options...
