Using Shazam on iPhone to identify an unknown song

Apple’s Shazam is one of the best free services out there for song recognition.

  • It lets you find out which song is playing around you (like on the TV or in a restaurant) or on the device (like in an Instagram video).
  • Then, you can listen to that full song on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, or other supported apps.
  • It can also sync your found tracks to a playlist on Apple Music.
  • Shazam can keep listening in the background to identify all the songs playing around you, and you can see them all in one place inside the app.
  • It can match your Shazamed songs to your location, thus helping you know where you found this song.
  • Shazam also gives you concert information for the found song.
  • It shows you real-time lyrics and lets you sing along.

Extra info: The Shazam interface will show a headphone icon when you have AirPods, Bluetooth headphones, or wired earphones plugged in. It will still work the same way and help you identify the music playing in an Instagram Reel, TikTok clip, YouTube video, Twitter, and elsewhere.

2. Use Shazam from Control Center

In addition to identifying what’s playing around you, this method is especially useful for finding songs playing on Instagram, Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, or other videos. It also works when you’re listening to music with wired or wireless earphones.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Add the Recognize Music button to Control Center. Since this feature is built into iOS and iPadOS, it works even if you don’t have the Shazam app.
  2. When you’re watching a video, open Control Center and tap the Shazam Recognize Music button to identify the song playing. If the video pauses when you open Control Center, you can go back to it after tapping the Shazam button. Once the app identifies the song, it will show you a notification.
