Most people who hear the word Sileo immediately think of the default package manager used by the Chimera and Odyssey jailbreaks for iPhone and iPad. But what if it could also run on a Mac?
The idea of having a package manager such as Sileo available on the Mac isn’t new, and Odyssey Team co-developer Hayden Seay (A.K.A. Diatrus) says it will be coming to fruition very soon.
Substitute, the tweak injection method used on the unc0ver jailbreak, and sometimes even the checkra1n jailbreak depending on personal preference, received yet another update on Friday, this time bringing the package up to version 2.0.9.
The latest update comes just one day after Sam Bingner published Substitute v2.0.8 with preliminary support and speed improvements for unc0ver on iOS & iPadOS 14. Substitute v2.0.9 isn’t quite as substantial of an update as the previous version, but it’s still recommended for all current users.
Shortly after the unveiling of the brand-new cicuta_verosa kernel exploit for all devices running up to and including iOS 14.3, renowned jailbreak developers and hackers began investigating its viability.
While much of the initial spotlight shined on Odyssey lead developer CoolStar to create an iOS 14-compatible jailbreak with the novel cicuta_verosa exploit, it seems that even Brandon Plank, another name that resonates positively with the jailbreak community, will be going hands-on with it.
If you’re using iOS or iPadOS 14 right now, then your only means of jailbreaking would be with the checkra1n jailbreak on older A7-A11-equipped handsets up to and including the iPhone X.
Fortunately, the tides may change in the relatively near future as a newly released kernel level local privilege escalation (LPE) dubbed cicuta_virosa looks particularly promising for all handsets capable of running iOS or iPadOS 12.0-14.3.
It was only a couple of days ago that security researcher Ian Beer shared a rather interesting kernel vulnerability for A11 and older devices (iPhone X and older) running iOS 14.1 and lower. But such a feat begs the question: what about A12 and newer devices?
Fortunately for those who’ve been asking this question, there could be a light at the end of the tunnel. Security researcher @pattern_F_ of Ant Security Lab demonstrated what appears to be a successful jailbreak attempt on an iPhone 11 running iOS 14.0
Many had thought that the iOS 12-centric Chimera jailbreak tool would stop receiving updates as development efforts shifted toward newer iOS & iPadOS 13 and 14 jailbreaks, but it seems that isn’t the case.
Chimera received another update this weekend, officially bringing it up to version 1.6.2.
Most iOS & iPadOS 13 jailbreakers are using either checkra1n, Odyssey, or unc0ver to enjoy an unrestricted handset without Apple virtue signaling how their user experience should be, but there could well be a new jailbreak in town very soon.
iOS developer Kritanta, known and respected for releasing a slew of high-quality jailbreak tweaks over the past few years, took to Twitter this afternoon to tease what could only be described as the very early stages of an upcoming jailbreak tool.
Apple just last week released iOS & iPadOS 14.4 to the general public with new features, bug fixes, and niche improvements, and as you might come to expect from the Cupertino-based tech company after having released a software update, the previous iOS & iPadOS 14.3 firmware is no longer being signed.
Apple closed the iOS & iPadOS 14.3 signing window just this evening, a move on the company’s behalf that prevents iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users from being able to downgrade their handset’s firmware from the newer iOS & iPadOS 14.4 release. This should come as no surprise to anyone, as Apple generally follows this rhythm of signing and un-signing after each software update it launches, no matter how large or how small.
Many jailbreakers were taken by surprise this past week when apps installed by AltStore post-January 28th suddenly began crashing upon launch. AltStore’s development team quickly recognized the issue responsible the crashes, citing server-side issues on Apple’s end, and then released an update in the form of version 1.4.3 this afternoon to resolve it.
While AltStore certainly is popular among jailbreakers for its ease of side-loading jailbreak apps like Chimera, Odyssey, and unc0ver and keeping them signed via AltDaemon, another popular option for achieving the same means was ReProvision, which was also unfortunately impacted by Apple’s server-side changes. Worthy of note, however, it seems that ReProvision won’t be receiving any updates to fix the app crashes as AltStore did.
It was only a couple of days ago that AltStore received an update in the form of a public beta to resolve a an issue where apps installed after January 28th would crash after the user tried launching them. This was a temporary (yet agonizing) issue for jailbreakers, and for that reason, it may come as no surprise that an official AltStore update would be imminent.
Tuesday afternoon, that very update materialized as AltStore and AltServer version 1.4.3 officially became available to the general public Worthy of note, this update is different from the public beta that launched two days ago, as it's an official public release as opposed to just a public beta build.
It may come as no surprise that when apps side loaded with the AltStore application after January 28th exhibited a baffling crash on launch, jailbreakers began to notice. After all, many jailbreakers rely on the platform to install their jailbreak apps, including but not limited to Chimera, Odyssey, and unc0ver.
The official AltStore Twitter account publicly acknowledged the issue a day later on January 29th, claiming that the app crashing was due to “server-side changes” and that a fix would be imminent. While many jailbreakers waited for the opportunity to install their favorite jailbreak tool again, we offered an interim fix that involved using DNSCloak and Jailbreaks.app.
In case you missed it, CoolStar released a brand-new libhooker Configurator app last week so that users of the Odyssey and Odysseyra1n jailbreaks could have more granular control over their libhooker tweak injector.
In addition to letting users toggle libhooker on or off on the fly, libhooker Configurator also permitted individualized tweak toggling, disabling tweak injection for Web Pages, and individually configuring tweak injection for apps, SpringBoard, and even Daemon processes.
