If you rely on a slide-loadable jailbreak such as Odyssey (iOS 13.0-13.7) or unc0ver (iOS 11, 12, and 13.0-13.5), then it can be devastating if your device suddenly reboots because of a dead battery or a glitch. When this happens, you’ll be without your jailbreak and any add-ons you installed until you can re-jailbreak again.

Sadly, with many signing service certificates being revoked left and right without notice and with AltStore suddenly not working for apps installed after January 28th, it almost seems like using these jailbreaks puts you right in the crossroads of frustration and unreliability. But perhaps it doesn’t need to.

The checkra1n jailbreak tool is renowned for its use of a powerful bootrom exploit called checkm8, which can’t be patched by Apple via a software update because the exploit exists in the hardware of devices equipped with A7-A11 processors.

The checkra1n team initially released the checkra1n jailbreak as a macOS-only application in 2019, and it wasn’t until a good bit into 2020 that the tool picked up support for Linux. As for Windows, the checkra1n team planned to support it, but to this day hasn’t implemented official support in a public release. So what’s the hold up, exactly?

Jailbreakers taking advantage of the iOS 13-centric Odyssey tool or the checkra1n-based Odysseyra1n bootstrap on iOS 13 or 14 will almost certainly want to launch Sileo and refresh their sources.

In a message bulletin shared to the official Sileo / Odyssey / Chimera Discord channel early Tuesday morning, CoolStar announced the release of libhooker version 1.4.0 with a host of notable improvements for users using either of the aforementioned jailbreaks.

Substitute v2.0.7 update adds improved support for cycript

Substitute, the tweak injection and code substitution method that is commonly utilized by the unc0ver jailbreak, and in some cases even the checkra1n jailbreak, received a major revamp with the launch of v2.0 at the start of this year.

Over the last couple of weeks, Substitute has seen a slew of smaller updates comprising of bug fixes and performance improvements, and as it would seem, there are more planned updates in the pipeline.

Luca Todesco teases pongoOS running on an M1-equipped Mac

It’s not unheard of to see checkra1n team member Luca Todesco Tweeting about some sort of jaw-dropping hacking achievement. Todesco has shown time and time again that he wields magnificent hacking talents, and as of this evening, he appears to be at it again.

In a series of Tweets shared Saturday, Todesco teased multiple photographs of what appears to be pongoOS running on one of Apple’s brand-new M1 chip-equipped Macs.

Chimera jailbreak updated to version 1.6.1 with Userspace reboot improvements

In a somewhat unexpected turn of events, the Chimera Team updated its iOS 12-centric jailbreak tool Saturday evening, officially bringing it up to version 1.6.1.

Chimera Team lead developer CoolStar first unveiled the release of Chimera v1.6.1 via the official Sileo / Odyssey / Chimera Discord channel.

Substitute receives another update, this time to version 2.0.6

Sam Bingner of team unc0ver published yet another update for Substitute on Saturday, officially bringing the package up to version 2.0.6.

Substitute was only recently updated to version 2.0, touting notable performance and stability improvements for the tweak injection platform. Today’s update is just one of many released in the past week, with each of those gradually addressing bugs introduced by the latest version.

This Thursday evening, Substitute received yet another update. The package now sports the version number 2.0.5, however for the average jailbreaker, this update isn’t quite as imperative as yesterday’s would have been.

Substitute updated to version 2.0.4 with performance and stability fixes

If you’ve been paying attention to the unc0ver team as of late, then you likely caught wind of the team’s plans in November to release Substitute version 2.0 with significant speed and performance improvements. Substitute is the primary tweak injection method used by the unc0ver jailbreak, which means that it loads user-installed jailbreak tweaks and extensions.

The unc0ver team’s plans were realized just last week after Sam Bingner unleashed the update on his personal repository, which comes pre-added to Cydia out of the box on the unc0ver jailbreak. While the update was somewhat shaky for a small subset of users at first, a couple of smaller subsequent Substitute updates quickly addressed that.

The checkra1n jailbreak utilizes such a powerful exploit that it offers a whole lot more than just a package manager and instant access to your favorite jailbreak tweaks. In fact, the hardware-based checkm8 bootrom exploit has proven more than capable of enabling a whole host of interesting hacks on compatible devices.

The latest of such hacks comes by way of Twitter user @RowRocka, who on Monday afternoon Tweeted a YouTube video of Ubuntu version 20.04 running on an iPhone 7 that had been pwned with the checkra1n jailbreak tool.

Substitute v2.0 officially released, v2.0.1 also now available

At the end of November, hacker and unc0ver lead developer Pwn20wnd shared a Tweet indicating that Substitute — the primary tweak injection method for this particular jailbreak — would soon be updated to version 2.0 with a trove of improvements.

Without any sort of ETA provided at the time, no one could have guessed when Substitute v2.0 would launch. With that in mind, many unc0ver users were taken by surprise late last night when the update officially became available by way of Sam Bingner’s repository.

Earlier this evening, the checkra1n team took to Twitter to announce that the checkra1n jailbreak tool has been updated to version 0.12.2 with a small number of changes, although notable ones nevertheless.
