Carrier Settings Update: what it is and how to check for it

From time to time, you might see a Carrier Settings Update message pop up on your iPhone, saying that new settings are available, and asking if you would like to update them now. Admittedly, this message is somewhat cryptic, and doesn't give you any information regarding what's included in the update or where it's coming from. Maybe even worth, I've had a friend ask me once if his iPhone got hacked as the message looked suspicious to him. In this post, we'll tell you more about carrier settings updates, what they are, and how to check for them.

AdvancedSettings8 is a jailbreak tweak that unlocks Apple's hidden settings for iOS 8. These settings are hidden for a good reason, as they reveal things that the average user would have no clue how to use. I consider myself to be a fairly advanced user, and it was enough to confuse me a bit, so there's that.

But there is some value to be had from AdvancedSettings8. After you peruse the multitude of sections and the vast array of adjustable values, you'll surely stumble upon at least one or two settings from which you can personally derive value.

PrefDelete: delete tweaks directly from the Settings app without opening Cydia

Normally, when you want to delete a jailbreak tweak installed on your device, you'll have to remove it from Cydia. If you ever wished to remove a tweak with just the tap of a button without opening Cydia, you should probably check out a brand new jailbreak tweak known as PrefDelete.

Developed by Brave Heart, PrefDelete allows you to delete tweaks that come with a preference pane directly from the stock Settings app. This can be done by tapping and holding on a tweak's preference button in the Settings app to remove it immediately on the spot, though a confirmation message appears before deletion ensuring that you don't remove a tweak by mistake.

HomeScreen Settings 7 lets you preview various settings from the Home screen

We've seen tweaks that provide quick access to various settings by making use of Activator gestures, however HomeScreen Settings 7 is a brand new jailbreak tweak by popular jailbreak developer Elias Limneos that offers a unique functionality to quickly access some of your settings directly from the Home screen.

HomeScreen Settings 7 allows users to add any settings to the Home screen and directly access them from there without opening the Settings app. The settings appear as icons on your Home screen which look quite similar to the folder icon. Tapping on any one of them displays a small folder-like settings page which you can interact with.

iCloud Drive and Settings web apps go live on iCloud Beta, we go hands-on

As we count down the remaining days until the September 17 public release of iOS 8, Apple is busy updating a beta version of the iCloud web interface with a pair of newly-added web applications: iCloud Drive and Settings.

iCloud Drive is especially interesting as a web-based fronted for Apple's file-hosting service which can be accessed through a desktop web browser on any Internet-connected computer.

Though not as fully-featured as, say, Dropbox's web interface, iCloud Drive provides basic features to manage that cloud-based storage of yours, browse the file structure, as well as add, remove and download files.

Both web applications are available after logging in to beta.icloud.com.

I've been known to give jailbreak developers a pass when it comes to developing what many deem as "worthless" tweaks, because I know that there is always someone who will find a tweak to be useful. The latest such item to teeter upon this fine line is Fake iOS 6 About — a jailbreak tweak that allows you to fake statistical information about your device.

If you've ever wanted to pretend that your device could hold a million songs, or that you reside on a carrier not available in your country, then Fake iOS 6 About is the tweak for you. In most cases, many will feel that such a tweak is worthless. I'll be totally honest with you; this time, it's hard not to agree with those sentiments.

New App Store app lets you toggle bluetooth on/off with a single tap (UPDATE: pulled)

As noted by MacRumors, a new app went live in the App Store yesterday called Bluetooth OnOff. As the name suggests, the software enables you to toggle your iOS device's bluetooth settings on or off with a single tap.

This is a big deal for a couple of reasons. For one, Apple has a history of denying or removing apps from the App Store that access iOS settings. And two, it makes toggling bluetooth much easier for non-jailbreakers...

iOS 5.1 Disables Home Screen Settings Shortcuts

Earlier this month, we showed you how to create home screen shortcuts for Settings toggles without jailbreaking. The method has become quite popular over the last few weeks, catching the attention of UI designers like Jeff Broderick.

Create Favorite Groups of Preferences With Preference Folders

Preference Folders is an upcoming jailbreak tweak that will shortly be released on Cydia. It allows you to group your favorite preferences from your Settings app into a custom folder that you create.

What's cool about Preference Folders is that it allows you to mix and match both stock iOS preferences and jailbreak tweak and app preferences. This grants the ability to place your most used items into a custom folder located directly in your Settings app.
