Orbotix announces faster, brighter Sphero 2.0

The Sphero ball was one of the first iPhone-controlled accessories to hit the market back in 2010, and it has long been a favorite of enthusiasts. The baseball-sized rolling ball can be remotely controlled via an iOS or Android app.

Today, Orbotix announced the successor to the Sphero ball: Sphero 2.0. The upgraded accessory is more than twice as fast as its predecessor—capable of rolling at 7 FPS—and three times as bright, with more LEDs and colors...

2013 iPhone Photography Awards: you won’t believe your eyes

iPhone photography fans who haven't heard about the iPhone Photography Awards yet should definitely familiarize themselves with the competition.

Trust me, the quality of the images photography buffs are taking on their iPhones will leave you breathless. It's also a nice reality check for those who happen to hold their own photography skills in high esteem.

The creativity oozing from some of these shots can't be overstated, especially given the rules prevent photo manipulation other than the capabilities provided by the photographer's camera app of choice...

Gartner makes it official: smartphones are outselling dumb phones

Smartphones - once the preserve for geeky first adopters - are now the norm. You notice the change on the street, on television and now with such traditional research firms as Gartner. Sales of smartphones in the second quarter reached 51.8 percent, compared to an astounding 21 percent decline in feature phones, or dumb phones as they're also called, according to the researcher. At the same time, the Asia/Pacific region marked the highest smartphone growth, reaching to 74 percent...

Infographic: the iPhone supply and manufacturing chain

Because of its size, popularity and visibility, Apple is being increasingly scrutinized for outsourcing gadget assembly to Asian contract manufacturers.

Although Tim Cook has pledged to bring some of the manufacturing jobs back to the United States with the new 'Made In USA' Mac Pro, critics still slam the company for sourcing product components from Taiwanese vendors. Per usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

For example, while iPhone screens are made by Asian vendors, its cover glass is being manufactured in the US by Gorilla Glass in Kentucky. As for the chips, the engine that drives the iPhone is Apple's in-house design, fabbed by Samsung in Austin, Texas.

I stumbled upon a very nice infographic that details the source of the many iPhone components, including the speakers, vibration motor, rear earth metals and more, jump past the fold to have a look...

Another supposed iPhone 5S rear shell shows modified Home button design

Another day, another iPhone "leak". With less than four weeks until Apple's September 10 event, a growing number of purported parts can be seen cropping up all over Asia.

The latest is this genuine looking backplate that shows enough tweaks and modifications not to be easily dismisses as an early iPhone 5 prototype design.

The most interesting bit about it is a slight change in the Home button assembly. It could be just Apple improving reliability of the Home button, but with all the rumors pointing to the fingerprint sensor integrated into the Home button, one never knows...

The eleMount is a premium surface mount for your iPhone and iPad

I don't currently use an in-vehicle mount for my iPhone. I've tried a few before, but each time I was more than disappointed with their build quality. But if I was going to try one again, I'd probably look for something like the eleMount.

The eleMount is a CNC machined all-aluminum mount for smartphones and tablets that looks like it was crafted by Apple itself. The best part, though, is that it doesn't use suction cups or clamps for mounting; it uses polyurethane pads...

Hands-on clip of alleged yellow iPhone 5C shell

At this point, we've seen so many photos of purported budget iPhone shells that it's hard to imagine Apple not launching the handset this fall. But just in case you are still skeptical, we're adding more evidence to the pile this morning.

A new hi-res hands-on video of a yellow iPhone shell, believed to belong to Apple's low-end handset, hit the web late last night. And it gives us an extremely close up view of both the outside, and inside of the so-called iPhone 5C's casing...

Joint iPhone 5S, 5C launch could be the most successful in Apple’s history

If you're still scratching your head trying to figure out why high profile investor Carl Icahn just made a [rumored] $1 billion investment in Apple, consider this: the stock is down more than $200 from where it was a year ago, despite any major missteps, and the company is about to have another big fall.

How big? Well rumor has it that Apple is going to unveil two new handsets during its big media event next month. There's the iPhone 5S, the successor to the current iPhone, and the 'iPhone 5C,' an all-new low-cost model. And analysts believe that the two will make for Apple's biggest product launch ever...

Facebook testing new VIP app to boost celebrity engagement

Facebook is working on a new mobile app, but you probably won't be able to use it. That is, unless you happen to be a Hollywood A-lister or a high-profile professional athlete. That's because the app is for VIPs only, or very important people.

The project is Facebook's latest attempt to entice famous people to share more stuff on their site—a move which is part of an even larger plan to compete more directly with Twitter for the attention of celebrities and their legions of followers...

Yelp update allows users to post reviews directly from the app

Yelp has posted an update for its iOS app this morning, bringing the client to version 7.0. The update doesn't include a lot of new features, but it does bring about one significant change: users can now post reviews to the site directly from the app.

The move has been a long time coming—users have long been calling for the ability to post to Yelp from within the app. The company has allowed users to post Tips from the mobile client in the past, but they can now post full-length assessments...

Smartphone theft fight gains UK support

The issue over smartphone thefts has taken on a British flavor. London's mayor now says he supports calls by American law enforcement officials asking Apple and others to beef up ways to prevent stolen phones.

In a statement, London Mayor Boris Johnson said smartphone makers should "take this issue seriously." Already, a half-dozen American officials have joined the 'Secure Our Smartphones' campaign, stretching from Hawaii to Delaware...

Analyst: iPhone 5C may exclude Siri, but will boost margins and attract new sales

For some time, Wall Street investors and Apple watchers have stressed the iPhone maker must adjust to more modest profit margins, as well as a worldwide reality where cheap Android smartphones enable competitors to attract price-conscious consumers. Now comes a voice saying Apple could have it all: a cheap handset, fatter margins and a larger international audience.

By attracting the prepaid market, Apple's much-expected iPhone 5C will do all that by going after a huge pool of prepaid wireless customers that's four times larger than the current U.S. subscribers. Meanwhile, another analysts believes he knows the cheaper iPhone will exclude some features, such as Siri...
