App Updates

LinkedIn hits the iPad, looks gorgeous

LinkedIn just updated their excellent free of charge iPhone client with native iPad support. LinkedIn 5.0 is optimized for the Retina display on the new iPad and has a new calendar feature that lets you see LinkedIn profile information for people you're meeting with. If you're on LinkedIn and love your iPad, this one's a no-brainer...

Clear to-do app updated with shake to undo, secret themes, UI tweaks

Realmac Software’s nice-looking to-do app dubbed Clear has been updated today with new features. It's the first update since the software's debut on the App Store in mid-February.

In addition to the shake-to-undo feature which, in my opinion, makes for a good demo but gets boring fast, Clear 1.1 added additional inspiration quotes while tweaking the interface with new gestures and other nice-to-haves.

The biggest new feature is support for 'secret' user interface themes. How secret? Well, you will need to unlock those to find out...

Shazam Player updated with iPad support, puts lyrics on your TV via AirPlay

Shazam Player, a cool music player software that landed on the iPhone and iPod touch last month, has been updated today with new features and native support for the iPad.

The program now takes advantage of the iPad's 9.7-inch canvas so the user interface feels less cluttered and it supports the new iPad's Retina display.

The biggest addition that'll do wonders for your home karaoke sessions is support for AirPlay via the Apple TV, allowing you to beam those lyrics to your big screen telly...

Adobe updates iOS Reader with sticky notes, PDF forms, digital signing

Adobe ported its PDF reader app to the iOS platform last October, but the software's been slow to catch on with users as iOS already sports basic built-in PDF support and Adobe's app did little to build on this foundation with new capabilities.

An update that just went live on the App Store aims to rectify this with the ability to digitally sign PDF documents using your finger, comment stuff with sticky notes, underscore parts of the document with new highlight tools and more...

Popular Dolphin browser gets voice control, URL keyboard, night mode

Dolphin, a popular third-party Android browser, finally got ported to the iPhone last August. It's seen more than ten million total downloads on both platforms since. Featuring custom gestures, a clever user interface design, advanced features and many customizable options, it's the favorite non-Apple browser on my iPhone.

Developer MoboTap Inc. updated the iPhone version of Dolphin today with half a dozen nice-to-haves, including the all-new voice control capability dubbed Sonar. Just shake your device or tap the mic icon and tell Dolphin what to search for. Voice input works with any site that has search or text fields.

This lets you not only search for eBay items, but update your Facebook status, post a tweet and more - all just by using your voice. Sonar also lets you speak commands to bookmark your favorite website and control other features of the app.

‘AppUpdateNotifier’ keeps you informed about App Store updates

First there was CydiaBulletin, and then there was the dead on arrival Aptdate. These jailbreak tweaks were conceptualized and/or created to provide notifications whenever an app or tweak had a pending updated waiting in Cydia.

Due to traffic concerns, it's unlikely that either of these tweaks will ever see the light of day. That's unfortunate, but it's the reality of the situation unless the developers can come up with a way that won't put too much stress on the repo servers.

But what about the App Store? This sort of functionality would be useful for pending App Store updates as well, would it not? Thankfully, someone was listening.

Check out our video walkthrough of AppUpdateNotifier, a jailbreak tweak that provides banner notifications when updates are waiting in the App Store...

Apple Pulls iMAME Arcade Game Emulator From the App Store

No surprise here. It appears that Apple has just pulled iMAME, the arcade game emulator we told you about a few days ago, shortly after it surfaced in the App Store.

Judging by Apple's history with controversial apps, we figured it was only a matter of time before Apple removed it. Especially since iMAME can play illegally-downloaded arcade games...

Amazon Updates Kindle iOS App With New iPad Interface, Textbooks, and More

Amazon has pushed out a major update to its universal iOS Kindle app, with the most interesting changes coming to the iPad version.

A new design has been rolled out for magazines on the iPad, with access to the same 400+ magazines and newspapers that the Kindle Fire has now available on Apple's tablet.

Users can now also "read print replica textbooks," which will have rich formatting and the same layout as the print editions...

Pulse News Reader Gets Major Update

We've seen a lot of iPhone news reader apps surface in the last month. First there was Flipboard, the popular iPad-turned-iPhone app. And then Zite, another prominent iPad news application, surfaced.

But my favorite news reader for both the iPhone and the iPad still has to be Pulse. Its image-driven interface is both attractive and user-friendly. And the app just got even better with the latest update...
