Learn how to choose between Siri and ChatGPT for your questions in the new Siri app, depending on which AI assistant you prefer or which one you think can handle the specific task better.
iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 add a new dedicated Siri app, in line with other popular AI apps like ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude.
In addition to keeping all your Siri conversations in one spot, the new Siri app also works as a regular AI chat app, thanks to Apple’s partnership with Google and its decision to use the Gemini model under the hood to power Siri.
Apple first integrated ChatGPT in iOS 18 a couple of years back, and if Siri couldn’t handle a request because it was too complex for it, it would ask your permission to use ChatGPT to handle that task. You could also enable automatic approval to speed things up.
Now, thanks to the Gemini backend, Siri in Apple’s OS 27 is already on par with what the erstwhile Siri-ChatGPT integration could do. Plus, Apple and OpenAI are in a legal battle over trade secrets. Still, all things considered, their partnership has continued, and you can choose to use ChatGPT in the new Siri app if you want.
Use ChatGPT in the Siri AI app
You can make this change on both iOS and macOS.
iOS
1) Update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 (currently in beta).
3) Open the Siri app and start a new conversation by tapping the compose icon.
4) Touch and hold the Ask Siri typing field and tap Ask. Then, select ChatGPT.
5) The ‘Ask Siri’ placeholder text inside the typing field will change to ‘Ask ChatGPT.’ Now, OpenAI will handle whatever question you ask here instead of Apple.
macOS
- Update your Mac to macOS 27 Golden Gate or install it on a partition.
- Set up the new Siri AI.
- Open the Siri app and start a new chat.
- Control-click in the Ask Siri field and select Ask > ChatGPT.
Tip: Asking something like “But this is the Siri app!” switches back from ChatGPT to Siri. But the reverse, that is, asking it to ‘Switch to ChatGPT’ won’t work; it instead opens the ChatGPT app if you have it installed.
A couple of things to note
- In my tests, I found that the Siri app defaults back to Siri after you start a new conversation, exit the chat and return to it, or close and reopen the app. There’s currently no way to permanently or persistently set the Siri AI app to use ChatGPT.
- What you ask ChatGPT in the Siri app will not show in your own ChatGPT history, even if you sign in to your OpenAI account in device Settings > Siri > ChatGPT.
If you can’t use ChatGPT in the Siri app
If the ChatGPT extension is off and you follow the steps above, you’ll be asked to enable it first. In case that fails:
- Quit the Siri app on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone.
- Go to macOS System Settings or iOS Settings > Siri > ChatGPT and turn on Use Extension.
- Reopen the Siri app and repeat the steps above. If it still fails, restart your device.
Other AI service integration may be added in the future
Industry leaks say Apple is open to the idea of allowing other services (I’m guessing like Claude or Grok) to have the same level of integration ChatGPT currently has. When that happens, you should be able to select those just like you can do ChatGPT now, but it may require having their app installed on your iPhone. ChatGPT has no such requirement, as it has been integrated into iOS since iOS 18.
