Google re-brands Places app as Google+ Local, adds features

Google's been streamlining their confusing set of web services and mobile apps since Larry Page took over the reigns as CEO from Eric Schmidt last year. As part of this simplification of Google, the company just updated its Places app for iOS. It's now re-christened as Google+ Local and comes with a few new interesting features, including voice search and Zagat reviews...

Facebook Pages Manager gets messaging, check-in Insights, tweaked notifications

Facebook rolled out its Pages Manager app for the iPhone a little over a month ago. It initially came with a number of features to give folks the ability to post updates and photos on the go as your Facebook Page.

It also lets you get notifications on new activity, view Page Insights and respond, post and comment as your Page.

Today, the first official update has landed on the App Store, bringing with it a few noteworthy enhancements missing from the original release...

Instagram gets Facebook likes, Explore section, revamped profile tabs and more

Instagram just pushed out a new version of its iOS app, the first update following its $1 billion deal with Facebook.

Instagram version 2.5 brings out half a dozen new features, including a revamped profiles tab, a brand new Explore section and the ability to share your likes to Facebook, to name a few.

If anything, we now know Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg was telling the truth when he promised to maintain Instagram as a standalone app.

Tweetbot, a popular Twitter client for iOS devices, just got updated with a couple new additions and various enhancements, including a reworked search view with location-based searching and nearby tweets.

You will also love the combined search for people and terms, relocated Trends and People categories, offline supprot for favorites and read later services, improved keyword mute filters, basic smart quote support when composing and other nice-to-haves...

Hulu updates iPad video player with Retina support

Hulu has finally updated their iPhone and iPad video player with the much-needed support for the Retina Display of the new iPad.

They also redesigned the user interface and brought out an enhanced video playback engine that takes advantage of the iPad's bigger canvas.

The app also features improved AirPlay mirroring and HDMI support on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 and above...

Confirmed: Sparrow for iPhone push notifications will require a yearly subscription

If you need yet another reason to jailbreak your iPhone, here it is: The popular Sparrow for iPhone email client will require a yearly subscription to enable push notifications for incoming messages. The sad news has been officially confirmed by developer Dom Leca and the Sparrow team.

Apple apparently told them they "are not willing to do any exception to the rule" concerning push support in Sparrow. Of course, those with a jailbroken iPhone can simply download Sparrow Push, a handy little tweak that adds this useful feature to the otherwise awesome email client at no additional cost.

Instapaper updated with features and gorgeous iBooks-style animations

I'm a big fan of Instapaper. I've come to rely on both the bookmarklet and the iOS app for my daily blogging and research, as well as general reading needs.

I've been also using Instapaper to catch up on my previously saved stories while on the go, using my iPhone or iPad.

Today, Marco Arment pushed another update that brought a couple new features in addition to a cosmetic change I've been clamoring for: iBooks-style animations.

I know that some other apps replicate the wonderful page curl seen in Apple's iBooks app, namely Google's Play Books. But whereas other programs fall short because of the sluggishness and jaginess exhibited when flipping through the pages, Instapaper 4.2 delivers.

I've been comparing page curls in iBooks and Instapaper for like an hour now and walked away convinced that Instapaper pretty much beats iBooks with its gorgeous, smooth and pixel-perfect page turns...
