Apple announces ‘biggest ever’ holiday for App Store with $1.1 billion sales in two weeks

Apple on Wednesday announced that its App Store has had the biggest holiday ever with a record-breaking $1.1 billion revenue in the two weeks ending January 3, as customers increased their spending on apps and In-App Purchases, setting back-to-back weekly records for traffic and purchases.

“January 1, 2016 marked the biggest day in App Store history with customers spending over $144 million,” said Apple. “It broke the previous single-day record set just a week earlier on Christmas Day.”

App Store acting up and not showing updates correctly? Try this workaround…

Have you experienced an annoying hiccup in the App Store where it shows that one or more apps need updating but you can't actually apply the updates? Or perhaps the App Store's icon on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad's Home screen is showing a badge even though you've just successfully downloaded all app updates?

I first noticed this odd behavior back in the summer and thought it was a temporary problem that would get fixed soon, but it persisted. As it turns out, this is a caching issue that can be easily circumvented with a simple, cool trick.

Universal apps with Apple TV support now being recognized on the App Store

It looks as if Apple is beginning to roll a feature that will help identify universal apps on the App Store featuring Apple TV compatibility. As first spotted by iFun.de and picked up by MacRumors, the feature appears to still be in the roll out phase.

Apps with Apple TV support are currently displaying a SF.UniversalAppleTV notation on the app's Details page in the App Store, but that appears to be a placeholder that will eventually be replaced with a simple "Apple TV".

Apple pushes intrusive iPhone 6s ad to some users inside the App Store

Twitter is on fire with reports from disgruntled users who were taken aback after witnessing a full-screen iPhone 6s ad taking over the App Store on their devices. The ad is, of course, from Apple itself and was conceived to persuade owners of pre-iPhone 6s models to upgrade to the ”ridiculously powerful” iPhone 6s.

The pop-up ad is full-screen and asks users to “Learn More,” which takes them to the iPhone 6s webpage on Apple's website, or “Upgrade Now.”

The latter option redirects users to the the Buy iPhone 6s page inside the official Apple Store app, if installed. Want to get back to what your were doing? That'll require tapping a dedicated button to dismiss the ad.

Apple releases Best of 2015 charts on iTunes

Apple on Wednesday posted its annual Best of 2015 charts on iTunes. “We debated. We argued. Everyone had favorites, but to make this list of 2015's finest, there could be no doubts,” wrote the company. “What you see here made the cut—they're the most visionary, inventive and irresistible apps and games of the year.”

Apple named Twitter-owned Periscope the App of the Year and Square Enix's excellent Lara Croft GO its Game of the Year.

Workflow, the popular iOS automation app, is listed as the Most Innovative App of 2015 and Dark Echo the Most Innovative Game of 2015. Facebook-owned Instagram is the Best App on iPhone 6s while Pixel Toys' Warhammer: 40,000 Freeblade took home the Best Game on iPhone 6s award, thanks to immersive 3D Touch controls.

Here's the full list of titles the topped Apple's charts in 2015.

Apple honors World AIDS Day with (RED) apps, products, accessories and more

Apple logos on the company's retail stores around the world have turned bright red today, and that means one thing: it's honoring the World AIDS Day. In the App Store, Apple and (RED) joined forces with developer Supercell, with 100 percent of proceeds from customers who buy (RED) packs for Supercell's games going to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

And via its homepage at Apple.com, the company is inviting customers to help the initiative by purchasing (RED)-branded products like Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Watches and accessories such as Beats headphones, the Smart Cover for the iPad Air and the Smart Case for the iPad Air 2.

How to fix the ‘Redownload Unavailable’ error in the App Store

Let's face it; everyone experiences buyer's remorse from time to time, which results in a change of heart about a purchase. Then there are those occasions when you regret changing your mind about changing your mind. That's what recently happened to me after I requested an App Store refund for an app that I later realized I actually wanted and needed.

Oddly, I encountered a weird error telling me that since I had previously requested a refund for the app, I could no longer purchase it again. That makes no sense. Why would Apple not want to take my money just because I had requested a prior refund?

The error reads "This redownload is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."

Whatever the reason for the error, after searching Google, it's obvious that I'm not the first to encounter this issue. The good news is that fixing the Redownload Unavailable with This Apple ID error is very easy to do...

Is Apple boosting rankings of its own apps on App Store’s Top Free charts?

A sneaking suspicion that Apple could be taking advantage of the App Store's charts to promote its own apps at the expense of others has received a prominent, though inconclusive, confirmation in today's TechCrunch report.

The publication noticed that multiple Apple apps such as Pages, Keynote and Numbers are being listed on the App Store's Top Free charts on some iOS 9.1 devices in higher positions than they would normally rank.

These same apps are ranked differently in the App Store within desktop iTunes and on other iOS devices. So, what's going on here?

How to redeem an Apple TV app promo code

While it's possible to receive promo codes for Apple TV apps, it's not possible to redeem such codes directly from the Apple TV interface itself. Even though the newly released Apple TV is the first iteration of the device capable of running native apps, Apple is keeping the process of promo code redemption limited to iOS or the Mac.

Have you received a promo code for an Apple TV app or game? In this post, we'll show you how to redeem it.

Apple adding ‘Shopping’ category to iOS App Store

Two days after it's updated the tvOS App Store on the new Apple TV with a Categories section, Apple is now rolling out a brand new section in the App Store for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad apps: Shopping.

TechCrunch is reporting today that in addition to listing apps with built-in support for its mobile payments service, Apple Pay, the Shopping section will include other shopping-themed apps with emphasis on product reviews, price comparisons, auctions and more.

Rayman Fiesta Run for iPhone and iPad slashed to $0 in Apple’s Free App of the Week promo

Since its November 2013 debut, Ubisoft's Rayman Fiesta Run has only gone free briefly through an in-app promotion within the Expedia app.

That's why Apple's editorial team has decided it was high time to permit everyone to download this game to their devices at no charge, so they've made Rayman Fiesta Run free until next Thursday.

This marks the first time the fast-paced platformer has been slashed to zero bucks in the App Store. Taking cues from Rayman Jungle Run, Rayman Fiesta Run has you jumping, flying, punching, running up the walls and more in the wacky new Fiesta world.
