Monty Python comes to iOS with John Cleese voiced The Ministry of Silly Walks

Our US audiences may not necessarily be fond of Monty Python, a British surreal comedy group best known for Monty Python's Flying Circus, a hilarious television sketch show broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974.

Even if you've never followed the show, chances are you've encountered some of the popular and widely quoted sketches on YouTube. Some have even gone to become cultural phenomenons in their own right. Take the "Spam" show, for example, which led to the coining of the term email spam.

My fav sketch is "The Ministry of Silly Walks" and much to my delight, it's now been turned into its own iOS game, now available in the App Store...

App Store gets dozens of awesome new iOS games in massive refresh

Thursday is always expected to be a busier day on the App Store each week, as several developers release new apps for iPhone and iPad. But when I awoke this morning, I was pretty shell-shocked to realize just how many new high-quality games are now available. While I would normally resort to throwing most of these new titles into App Recap, our daily app roundup, the sheer number of awesome new games merits a separate post this afternoon.

Aerena: Clash of Champions, Supernauts and Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake are among the new games in this massive App Store refresh, which is something that usually only happens around the holidays. We've provided game trailers for some of the exciting new games ahead, and we'll be highlighting even more of the releases in App Recap later tonight. So grab your iPhone or iPad and check out a dozen must-have games ahead…

Gameloft’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier is Apple’s new Free App of the Week

Every Thursday, Apple features another app or game as the App Store's Free App of the Week. This time around, Apple's editorial team has chosen Gameloft's Captain America: The Winter Soldier game for the iPhone and iPad, regularly a $2.99 value.

Released three months ago, this movie tie-in has you playing as Captain America who must lead his S.H.I.E.L.D. Strike Team as they struggle to contain a massive attack on the World by several nefarious crime organizations.

The game boasts interestingly cartoonish artwork style and doesn't disappoint in terms of pure action: there are plentiful combos to master though it's not all about fighting either as you'll need to use your tactical skills to combat threats and lead your Strike Team wisely...

Console-grade Hellraid: The Escape powered by Unreal Engine 3 hitting iOS on July 10

If I had a nickel every time a developer pitched their iOS game with the overused "console style graphics" phrase, I would be filthy rich by now.

Yet in the case of Hellraid: The Escape, an upcoming action role-playing game (RPG) from Techland and Shortbreak Studios, the catch phrase rings true.

Indeed, the forthcoming iPhone and iPad title does seem to "push the boundaries of quality gaming on mobile devices even further."

Originally slated for release in June, the game has been pushed back to July as developers needed more time to work out the kinks and polish up the game's visuals.

If an announcement trailer included after the break is anything to go by, it should be well worth the wait...

Aspyr game sale: Star Wars, Borderlands, Call of Duty, Civilization and more now half price

Yesterday, my colleague Joe Rossignol's well-received daily App Recap column touched briefly on a few newsworthy discounts on premium Mac games such as SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition, BioShock Infinite and Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Turns out the price drops are actually part of Aspyr's broader promotion, with additional premium titles like Star Wars games, along with Civilization V: Campaign Edition, Borderlands 2 and The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, being offered half price for a limited time.

Your iTunes download links follow right after the break...

Feral Interactive is running a not-to-be-missed sale offering a noteworthy deep discount on the original BioShock Mac game, as well as on its sequel, BioShock 2.

Starting today, you can now grab both BioShock and BioShock 2 for $5 each in the Mac App Store, down from their respective asking price of $20 apiece.

Mobile-exclusive Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution 2 arriving July 2

Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution 2, a mobile-exclusive sequel to the original Civilization game, is coming early next month to iOS devices, publishing label 2K Games and developer Fireaxis announced Monday.

The game has been designed from the ground up for mobile devices, unlike the current Civilization Revolution which is basically an iOS (and console) port of the 2008 PC original.

Revolution 2 is slated to launch on July 2 and we'll make sure to tell you all about it as soon as it hits the App Store...

Grub turns the classic game of ‘Snake’ into something worth playing again

Do you remember the game Snake? Some might even argue that it was the earliest mobile game, at least on a phone and not as a separate device. Players would control a stack of pixels that would grow every time the snake would reach the tiny dot. If you touched the edge, you’d die. If you got too long and ran into yourself, you’d die.

Grub takes the basic concept of snake and reimagines it for today’s mobile needs. It is much more colorful and animated than the 1997 version. Plus there is more to the game than trying to catch one tiny dot…

Godfire review: this game is about as console quality as it gets on iOS

These days, game developers are trying harder than ever to push the boundaries of what is possible with mobile gaming. No, we still aren’t there yet, but every day brings us closer to console quality gaming in the palm of our hands.

Godfire: Rise of Prometheus is one of those games that maxes out the iPhone and iPad’s abilities by offering a graphically complex game with fast action gameplay in a fairly large world. Read our game review of Godfire below…

Warner Bros. releases ‘LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril’ for iOS

In a somewhat surprising move, Warner Bros. has released a new game from its popular Lego franchise for iOS called 'LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril'. The title, which landed on PCs and consoles last year, is now available on both the iPhone and iPad.

Like most LEGO games, Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril falls in the action adventure genre. Players take control of Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Hulk and other Marvel characters in an effort to stop villains from building weapon capable of destroying the world...

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ now available in the App Store

With the movie Transformers: Age of Extinction slated to hit theaters next week, Hasbro and developer partner DeNA have released their tie-in game of the same name. The title is now available in the App Store for both the iPhone and iPad.

The game, which falls into the '3D combat runner' genre, sees players thrown into a cinematic universe where they must recruit and customize a team to help them take down Decepticon enemies in a series of fast-paced missions. Autobots, roll out...
