VLC media player is back in the App Store

VLC, the popular cross-platform media player which lets you watch AVI videos on your iPhone and iPad without conversion (as well as other non-iOS-friendly media types), is back in the App Store following a long-standing licensing dispute.

In addition to resolving licensing issues, this edition of VLC brings a few noteworthy enhancements to the table which I'll lay out for you after the jump.

UPDATE: following a soft-launch in New Zealand, the app on February 27, 2015, finally went live in the US App Store.

Weafo lets you quickly transfer files to multiple recipients using App Extensions

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. You have a large file that you want to send to someone, but it’s too big for email. So, you open up Dropbox or some other cloud storage service. What if you could share large files without the need of Dropbox, or AirDrop, or email, or any of that?

Weafo is an app extension that lets you transfer files to a recipient on the same Wi-Fi network using a designated web address. Select the file you want. Tap the Share icon. Tell the recipient the address. You’re done.

SwitcherFX adds a blur effect to the cards in the App Switcher

If you're looking to add more privacy to the cards found in the App Switcher, then SwitcherFX is mostly capable of fulfilling that task. It's a new jailbreak tweak that allows you to add a privacy blur filter on top of the app preview cards that appear in the App Switcher. It also features several degrees of App Switcher and blur customization.

Aoraki a multi-functional virtual button tweak that tries too hard

Aoraki is a newly released jailbreak tweak that places a virtual button on the screen at all times. This button allows you to access a heaping helping of functions ranging from file sharing to Twitter quick compose shortcuts. In other words, Aoraki, is the equivalent of a swiss army knife when it comes to jailbreak tweaks. It's the proverbial jack of all trades, but master of none.

LG Watch goes luxury ahead of Apple Watch later this spring

LG has launched an upgrade to its LG Watch, taking it to a luxury level, ahead of the release of the Apple Watch in April that will be available in several different styles.

The LG G Watch Urbane features an all-metal build modeled after the LG Watch R. The LG G Watch R has been called one of the better Android Wear watches on the market, receiving rave reviews from many members of the tech press.

Taking it to a luxury level, LG may have just improved the G Watch R expediently.

11 tweaks to look over this weekend

A week just ended, and a new one is starting, which gives us an opportunity to look at what was released on Cydia during the last few days. Once again, the trend gets clearer as less and less jailbreak tweaks are being released, something that we've been confirming every week for the past several weeks. This week we've go 11 tweaks for you to look at.

A beautiful collection of geometric wallpapers for iPhone

The Wallpapers of the Week series is advancing in age, and with age comes experience. We keep a close eye on the section and try to determine what readers enjoy, what is a habit, a preference, a hate. Of course, data provide quantitative numbers and comments provide qualitative feedback. Crossing the two, provides a path for further posts.

Naturally, not every reader will find their favorite wallpaper each week and they are always quick to sound off. However, there is a certain thread of wallpapers that always seem to draw positive attention: geometric shapes.

QR Mode turns the stock Camera app into an awesome QR code reader

In some countries, like Japan for example, QR codes are prolific and people user them often. Although that's not the case in the United States, and probably never will be, it does seem like there has been an uptick in QR code usage in the last few years. A new jailbreak tweak called QR Mode will certainly help its cause, among jailbreakers at least.

QR Mode is by far the best looking and best functioning QR code reader on Cydia, and it's even better than standalone app offerings found in the App Store. Its feature set is well-rounded, its implementation seriously impressive, and it doesn't feel overly intrusive. Although it suffers from a few bugs, QR Mode is well worth its $1.99 asking price, especially if these bugs can be stamped out.

You can actually hear the Touch ID sensor on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

It's odd to think about, but did you know that the Touch ID sensor on your iPhone makes noise? If you hold an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus up to your ear in a quiet room and touch the Touch ID sensor, then you will hear a very faint clicking sound emitting from the vicinity of the sensor. It's just another weird fact gleaned from the /r/apple this morning.
