Apps of the week: Mazecraft, Trackd, Focus, and more

With the new update to iOS 8 and iTunes 12, it doesn't seem like there could possibly be any time to play around with new content from the App Store. I mean, you can finally add songs to new playlists and actually use iCloud Music Library.

However, I will always find time for new content from the App Store. That's my job. If you are looking for a new game to try out, or wish you could write songs remotely with friends, we've got a list of apps and games you should check out this weekend.

Apple launches new Link Bracelet Kit, L/XL Sport Bands and standalone Modern Buckle

After launching its wearable device earlier this morning through Best Buy Canada and the Australian department store Harvey Norman’s outlets in Auburn, New South Wales, Apple surprised Apple Watch fans by making available a few new accessories on its online store.

An all-new Link Bracelet Kit and L/XL Sports Bands to fit bigger wrists are now available through the Apple Online Store.

In addition, the 38mm Modern Buckle band is now available on a standalone basis for the first time since the Apple Watch's April debut.

Documents show Apple’s car is further along than many suspected

Apple's self-driving electric car, codenamed Project Titan, is further along than many suspected, reports The Guardian. The publication has obtained documents that show that the Cupertino company is already scouting locations to test the vehicle.

The Guardian's Mark Harris said the documents were obtained legally under a public records request, and they contain correspondence between Apple engineer Frank Fearon and an employee for top-secret vehicle testing ground GoMentum Station.

AT&T cutting prices of shared data plans and unveiling new ones tomorrow

U.S. wireless carrier AT&T announced this morning a few notable changes coming to its shared-data plans beginning tomorrow. For starters, customers on existing Mobile Share Value Plans with fifteen and twenty gigabytes of cellular data will now pay less for their high-speed 4G LTE data: the 15GB plan will drop from $130 to $100 per month while the 20GB tier will go from $150 down to $140 per month.

Apple Watch hits Best Buy in Canada and Harvey Norman in Australia

Keeping true to its promise, Best Buy Canada today began carrying the Apple Watch in its retail stores throughout the country. The electronics retailer's online store in Canada is now selling Apple's watches, too. In addition, the Apple Watch is now available through the Australian department store Harvey Norman's outlets in Auburn, New South Wales.

My #1 next-gen iPhone feature request has nothing to do with Force Touch or better cameras

A bunch of short-sighted analysts are downgrading $AAPL on the basis that the rumored Force Touch screen on the 'iPhone 6s' and 'iPhone 6s Plus' won't be enough of a hardware differentiator to motivate owners of the present-generation iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to upgrade.

To them, I say: you'd be hard-pressed to call Force Touch the defining feature of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. A convenience, yes. But a marquee new feature? No way.

But wait, what about “the biggest camera jump ever”? Surely a rumored 12-megapixel back shooter with 4K video capture and a five-megapixel upgrade to the iPhone's paltry 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera would warrant an upgrade?

While perks like substantial camera upgrades, force-sensing screens, faster chips, two times faster LTE and a stronger body are much appreciated, these expected enhancements won't convince me to upgrade my rusty old iPhone 6 Plus unless the forthcoming phones offer this one feature I have been craving for years now.

TechMatte MagGrip air vent mount is a cradle-less holder for your iPhone 6

We've mentioned a couple of air vent mounts in the past, each one with a different feature, but all of them are cradle mounts. However, there is an easier way to mount your iPhone to your car so you can set up and go.

TechMatte's MagGrip is a magnetic mount for your car's air vent so you can simply set it on the base and drive off. There is no need to clip it or snap it to your iPhone 6. When you want your device back, pull it away from the magnetic base and you are done.

Court denies Samsung’s latest appeal request in ongoing patent case

The US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday denied Samsung's request to reconsider the court's decision to uphold damages awarded in its patent infringement case, reports the San Jose Mercury News. The damages amount to more than $400 million.

This is just the latest turn in what seems to be a never-ending patent case between Samsung and Apple. In 2012, a jury found Samsung guilty of infringing on Apple's patents and awarded the iPhone maker $1 billion in damages, which has since been cut in half.

New Apple diversity report shows growth in hires of minority workers

Apple on Thursday issued an updated diversity report, to provide transparency on its efforts to beef up hiring of women and minorities. The company is one of many Silicon Valley firms that has been criticized for having a mostly white, male work force.

According to Apple's data, men still account for 69% of its workforce, and 54% of its US employees are white. It's trying to move the needle though, as it's hired 11,000 women since last year's report (an increase of 65%), and over 5000 non-white workers.

Apple now lets you restore deleted iCloud files, contacts, calendars, and reminders

Apple quietly added on Thursday a new feature to iCloud.com that lets you restore deleted files, contacts, calendars, and reminders. Available from the Settings tab of iCloud.com, this feature archives your deleted iCloud files for 30 days, as well as versions of your contacts, calendars, and reminders at various intervals, making it an easy back up plan in case something goes wrong.

Bloomberg: Apple to delay TV service until 2016

Apple has scrapped plans to announce its long-rumored streaming TV service at its upcoming September 9 event, reports Bloomberg. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the outlet says that content deal talks with 21st Century Fox and others have been progressing slowly.

Additionally, Apple also doesn't have the computer network capacity in place to ensure a good viewing experience—a common complaint among users of Dish's Sling TV and other streaming services. Thus, the company has decided to push back the launch of its service to 2016.

Time Surfer goes free as Apple’s App of the week

Apple has just named Kumobius' "Time Surfer" its App of the Week for this week. This means that from now through next Thursday, you’ll be able to download the popular endless arcade runner for free on both iPhone and iPad—a solid savings of a buck.

If you've ever played Tiny Wings, Time Surfer will feel somewhat familiar. The basic mechanical gameplay is the same—tap the screen to pull in close and gain speed, release to fly. But make no mistake, everything else is much faster and far more intense.
