As Apple News launch draws nearer, Flipboard rolls out new personalization features

After iOS 9 launches this fall, reading aficionados and news junkies will have a field day consolidating their reading experience via a brand new Flipboard-like app.

Called News, it basically aggregates news stories and popular blog posts from around the web and presents them in a beautifully decluttered view with smooth layouts made possible by the new Apple News format.

But Flipboard isn't standing still either.

Today, the social news aggregator service began rolling out some changes to its mobile app which it designed to help users fine-tune their Cover Stories view using an all-new thumbs-up and thumbs-down system.

1Password for iOS gains quick vault switcher, Touch ID and Apple Watch updates and more

1Password, the popular password manager for iOS, OS X and Windows by developer AgileBits, today received a nice little update in the App Store which bumped the app to version 5.5 and brought out a couple notable improvements.

In addition to a brand new quick vault switcher, 1Password 5.5 contains improvements to TouchID authentication, shared lock settings, browsing Credit Card items on your Apple Watch and other tidibts.

Hours after the BigBoss repo endured an outage, ModMyi is experiencing similar problems

In what appears to be a coincidence, the popular ModMyi repo now appears to be suffering from an outage. This comes just hours after the BigBoss repo waded through extended downtime.

When trying to refresh the ModMyi repo from the Sources tab in Cydia, it hangs and never actually refreshes. Trying to download a tweak from the repo results in a black screen with an eventual timeout—just like what happened with the BigBoss repo yesterday.

Like I said, it could be just a coincidence, but I have to admit that the timing of these two outages is a little odd. Both ModMyi and BigBoss rarely suffer from extended downtime, so it's weird to see them both suffering from similar outages back to back like this.

Apple bringing its watch to more retail outlets in France

The Apple Watch will be available in some additional locations in France beginning tomorrow, August 21, French blog iPhoneAddict reported Thursday.

In addition to Apple's own brick-and-mortar and online stores which have been carrying the device in the country since its April 24 unveiling, customers in Paris will be able to pick up the device through the Fnac online store and its flagship retail outlet at the famous Champs Elysées.

Sharp and Foxconn rumored to build and assemble touch modules for iPad Pro

The plot is thickening following yesterday's analyst report that Apple's larger-screened iPad is entering mass production in September and October and recent sightings of an unreleased “iPad6,8” model with a screen resolution of 2,732-by-2,048 pixels in commercial app analytics data.

According to Asian trade publication DigiTimes, Japanese giant Sharp and Foxconn, the world's top product assembler, will be supplying touch modules for the larger iPad, tentatively dubbed by the press the iPad Pro.

Keep your iPhone 6 charged at a distance with Bolse’s Cloth Jacketed Lightning Cable

There are two things wrong with Apple's Lightning cable. One is that the cord is just not long enough to be useful. The other is that it tends to tangle when not properly stored.

Bolse solves both of those problems with a six-foot MFi certified cord that is covered in a high-quality nylon jacket so you can plug your iPhone 6 into the wall and still use it while sitting on the couch.

Final Fantasy VII is now available for iOS

Final Fantasy VII, the legendary Japanese RPG that first launched on the original PlayStation back in 1997, is now available for download from the App Store for $15.99. It's been called one of the most influential RPGs of all time, and now it's available in handheld form as a universal app for iPhone and the iPad.

It's been a long time coming for this release. Back in October 2013, Square Enix director Takashi Tokita stated that such a release could be "years away" citing storage space limitations. Well, it's August 2015, and the game is just now arriving, so he wasn't too far off the mark...

BIM: a new jailbreak tweak that lets you view links without leaving the Messages app

I've always lived by the idea that simple jailbreak tweaks make the best jailbreak tweaks, and BIM is the perfect example of that. BIM is a tweak that lends a convenient web browsing experience directly inside of the stock Messages app.

When someone sends you a link, tapping on it will open a web browser directly inside the Messages app. This means that you can check out the links sent to you quickly without needing to leave the Messages app for Safari.

Review: Sennheiser ClipMic digital and Apogee MetaRecorder

As many of you guys know, I’m fairly involved in audio and video when it comes to producing content for iDownloadBlog. As someone who co-produces multiple podcasts each week, I’m especially fond of audio, and any new product that surfaces that could possibly give my audio game a boost is on my radar.

One such product is Sennheiser’s new ClipMic digital ($199 on Amazon). It’s a lavalier mic that connects directly to the iPhone via its MFi certified Lightning connector. With the ClipMic digital, you can basically transform your iPhone into a high quality audio recorder...

Samsung to appeal to Supreme Court in Apple patent case

As expected, Samsung is taking its patent battle with Apple to the United States Supreme Court. The San Jose Mercury News points to a new court filing from the company, which voices its intent to ask the Supreme Court to hear its case.

In 2012, Samsung was found guilty of infringing on multiple Apple patents and was ordered to pay Apple more than $1 billion in damages. That amount has since been cut in half, but Samsung is hoping to get the sum further reduced.
