One thing that the Photos app on iOS has been lacking is the ability to sort photos and videos in your albums. Luckily with iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and later, that’s no longer an issue.
You can sort a couple of different ways in Photos within your Shared Albums and albums you create. This is a terrific feature that many have been waiting for, and if you’re one of the many, here’s how to sort on iPhone and iPad in Photos.
Where you can sort
As mentioned, you can sort photos and videos in your albums. This includes Shared Albums and those you make for yourself.
The other areas in Photos do not offer the sorting option. This includes premade collections like Favorites and Recents, utilities like Imports and Recently Deleted, and all of the folders within Media Types.
The sole purpose is to give you a way to sort the items in your albums.
How to sort in Photos on iPhone and iPad
If you’re ready to give the sorting feature a try, open Photos and pick an album. Then, follow these steps.
1) Tap the three dots in the top right corner of the album.
2) Choose Sort.
3) Select your sort option. You can pick from Oldest to Newest or Newest to Oldest.
In Shared Albums, you can also choose Date Added, and in albums you create, you can choose Custom Order. (Custom is basically your manual sorting.) Both of these are the default sort orders for these types of albums.
And that’s all there is to the sort feature in Photos! It takes only a few seconds to arrange your items in the order you’d like them.
Being able to sort in albums in Photos is a basic feature but one that’s been missing. Are you happy that a sort option has been added? Let us know in the comments below.
