ZenScreen, Chroma, Flyr, and other apps to check out this weekend

Looking for some new apps to try this weekend? iDB has you covered. In this week’s edition of our Apps of the Week roundup, we’ve selected some great new apps including a wallpaper-maker, an adult coloring book, and an interactive video platform. And as always, we’ve also picked two great new games for you to check out.

ZenScreen

Not happy with the current selection of iOS wallpapers? Make your own with ZenScreen. This app essentially connects you with hundreds of thousands of high quality photos and images, and allows you to turn them into wallpapers for iPhone and iPad. Features include blurring and other editing tools, and the photos are pulled from sites like Unsplash, Flickr, Reddit and SpaceX. Sure, there are hundreds of these apps in the App Store, but this one looks like it’s worth checking out. ZenScreen is available for free.

Chroma

From the makers of the award-winning Mini Monet, a coloring app for kids, comes Chroma, a coloring book for adults. Again there are a bunch of apps like this already available, but like sketch apps, the tools and artwork vary enough that it’s always worth trying out different options. The UI looks great here, as do the features, but there are two caveats worth noting: one, it looks like some features and content are hidden behind a premium subscription service that starts at $2.99 per week, and I couldn’t find any mention of support for Apple’s Pencil. Chroma is available for free.

Flyr

Make and watch interactive videos on-the-fly with Flyr. The app is filled with content, including thousands of fast-paced interactive stories, and over 1 million layouts, colors and styles to choose from. When making videos, it’s easy to insert your favorite GIFs, clips and photos, and publishing your project takes seconds. Think of it kind of like Snapchat, minus the disappearing messages. Flyr is available for free.

Planet of Heroes

Looking for an exciting real-time war game? Meet Planet of Heroes. It offers stunning graphics, strategic depth and gripping fights that come to you in the form of breath-taking 7-minute matches. Features include PVP with friends, PVE campaigns, 20K setup possibilities, and action-packed gameplay. Yes, this is a ‘freemium’ title that has several IAPs, but the early reviews say this game is worth a look. Planet of Heroes is available for free.

Kingdom: New Lands

The award-winning game Kingdom is now available on mobile! It’s the same experience hundreds of thousands have come to enjoy on other platforms, optimized for touchscreens. For those unfamiliar with the title, the game tasks players with building and defending their kingdom. Avoid greedy creatures trying to take your coins and steal your crown, and have your loyal subjects help you defend and attack. Plus, enjoy the beautifully-nostalgic graphics and incredible soundtrack. Kingdom: New Lands is available for $9.99.
