Apps of the week

With this year’s E3 gaming conference over, it is a wonder some of our heads didn’t explode with excitement. Even though most announcements were meant for the console or computer gaming world, mobile gaming certainly got some love. This fall is going to be amazing.

For now, we’ve got a list of apps and games for your weekend enjoyment. If you can’t be relaxing on a beach somewhere, you might as well have fun with what you’ve got.

Garfield Chef: Game of Food

Garfield Chef

This week, the world’s most lovable fat cat turned 37. To celebrate, Garfield has a new game in the App Store. Players help Jon, Garfield, and the rest of the crew to learn new recipes by matching similar ingredients. In this match-three puzzle game, you will also have to defeat alien food invaders and avoid such things as rats and frozen ingredients. In addition to eating and fighting, you can unlock funny costumes and turn Garfield into a clown or cowboy. Costumes provide special skills. You can play as Garfield, Odie, Pooky, Arlene, Nermal, and more. This game is available for free.

Atmos – Weather for your iPhone and Apple Watch

Atmos

This attractive looking new weather app features simple forecasts of temperature, wind speeds, and precipitation for daily planning. It has multiple location options so you can view different places without having to be there. Weather reports are designed with color temperature representation. The sharing feature makes it easy to let your friends know how nice it is on your vacation while they are home suffering poor weather. The Today widget provides access to the current weather, plus an hourly forecast. The app is also compatible with Apple Watch and provides similar information in Glances. This app is available for free.

Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter

Bethesda made a huge announcement at this year’s E3 about its upcoming Fallout 4 video game. At the same time, the company launched a friendly holdover for mobile devices in the form of Fallout Shelter. In this time management game, you must keep an eye on your wasteland survivors by putting them to work. Make sure they have enough food, water, energy, and living space or they will die hungry and unhappy. As your dwelling grows, so do the problems. Before you know it, raiders will be trying to take over your tranquil home. This game is available for free.

Free – Spend time with people you like

Free

In today’s busy world, it is harder than ever to find time to spend with the people you care about. With this app, you can quickly let friends and family know your current status. If you are free to get together, your friends will know about it. They can send you a quick message and a group chat can begin the planning stages. If you are busy this weekend, swipe to set your status and mute notifications so you don’t get bombarded with questions of where you are at from friends. This app is available for free.

FireWhip

Firewhip

If you are looking for some simple, arson-based fun, this fast-paced arcade game will whip you around. With your firecracker style attack, fling your flaming whip around, smacking down enemies. If you get going a little too fast, you might accidentally put out your own fire. At full length, you will be able to crack that whip for stunning results. You must learn how to control your whip or it won’t do you much good. Spin, swipe, and crack you way through stronger enemies as you rack up high scores. This game is available for $0.99.

Ello

Ello

Not long ago, Ello was poise to take over Facebook when the latter was cracking down on real names while the former was allowing you to be who you want. Facebook may still remain the dominant social networking site, but Ello has not gone into hiding. You can now take the social site with you wherever your smartphone goes. This social networking service is different than most others because it doesn’t make a profit on mining your data. You maintain full ownership of videos, photos, and anything you post. Ello also does not censor content and they don’t sell advertisements. If you are thinking of getting on board, now is the time to try it out. This app is available for free.
