iH8sn0w’s f0recast tool updated with new features

News on the jailbreaking front has been pretty slow as of late. With no release date in sight for a jailbreak compatible with Apple's latest devices and software, it seems like the rest of the community has sort of quieted down.

This afternoon, iOS hacker iH8sn0w broke the silence by releasing an update to his popular f0recast utility. Version 1.4 of the app brings about a number of new features, including the ability to view SHSH blob availability...

Nito Installer allows you to easily install nitoTV and XBMC on a jailbroken Apple TV

Thanks to the folks over at FireCore, both jailbreaking and installing useful jailbreak apps on an Apple TV 2 is about as easy as it gets. FireCore's jailbreak tool — Seas0npass — is incredibly simple, and it's free.

Likewise, FireCore's application package — aTV Flash (black) — is extremely simple as well, though there is a charge associated with using it. Pretty much everything that you can install using aTV flash (black) can be accomplished on your own with a bit of know how, but its simplicity makes the package worth the money.

Now Kevin Bradley, better known in hacking circles as nitoTV, has created his own easy to use installer, appropriately called, nito Installer. Unlike aTV flash (black), his version is free and runs directly on an iOS device like the iPhone or iPad.

Want to see how it works? Take a look inside as we take nito Installer for a spin...

Watch this guy open his garage door with Siri

It's been a while since we've seen any cool Siri Proxy videos. At one time they were all the rage, with people starting cars, adjusting thermostats, and more, all via Apple's virtual assistant.

Now that the newness of Siri has worn off, Siri hacks and proxy usage has kind of died down. That is, until now. With the help of a friend — the credit card sized Rasberry Pi computer — this guy is able to open up his garage using only his voice.

How to jailbreak iOS 6.1 beta 4

Apple seeded the 4th beta installment of iOS 6.1 just a while ago, and it's now available as both a delta update, and a direct download via Apple's developer portal.

As we always strive to do, we've taken it upon ourselves to jailbreak iOS 6.1 beta 4 as a confirmation that it can be done. Inside, we'll show you the exact steps that you need to take in order to do the same on your qualifying iOS 6 beta 4 device.

Smule’s Strum app adds music and Instagram-like effects to your videos

Even if you don't recognize the name Smule, chances are you've still heard of one of their apps. The Palo Alto-based mobile developer has delivered some pretty big iOS hits in its day such as Ocarina, which turns your phone into a flute-like instrument, Magic Piano, and I Am T-Pain.

This past week, Smule introduced its latest creation: an iPhone app called Strum. Unlike the aforementioned titles, Strum doesn't help you create music, but rather it allows you to create and edit short movie clips with Instagram-like video filters, digital audio filters, and more...

‘MapsOpener’ makes Google Maps the default Maps app on iOS

Google Maps is back on iOS, but there's just one problem -- Apple's stock maps app still remains default, so all of your maps links will open in Apple's version instead of Google's.

Thankfully, we knew it was only a matter of time before a jailbreak solution appeared to skirt around this issue. That solution is called MapsOpener -- a brand new jailbreak tweak that forces maps links to open up in Google Maps...

Undercover journalists take video inside Foxconn iPhone 5 factory

The walls around Foxconn's larger manufacturing facilities are infamously well-guarded. The factories have been the source of a large amount of media criticism due to unfit working conditions, and they rarely, if ever, let press in.

So the folks of Envoyé Spécial, a French 60 minute-like TV program, had to go undercover to get into the Zhengzhou iPhone 5 factory to get the answers to their long-standing questions, like: are things really improving at Foxconn?

Amazon’s Instant Video app updated with iPhone and iPod touch support

Amazon released its video player app as an iPad-only affair back in August and today the online retailer has updated the software with support for the iPhone and iPod touch. The new universal binary is still provided on a free of charge basis, though the videos, of course, must be purchased from Amazon. That the Instant Video software now works natively on all form-factor iOS devices is no doubt a good news for those of you who get your entertainment from Amazon. The program allows you to download videos for offline viewing and comes with an included selection of top Prime Instant Video titles included in the app...

Google Maps app now available in the App Store

As expected, the official Google Maps app has landed in the App Store this evening. The release comes following a number of rumors, which have been circulating since the summer when it was announced that Apple would be replacing Google Maps in iOS with its own in-house solution.

The app works on the iPhone and iPod touch (no iPad version yet), and includes a number of features such as voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, Google's exclusive Street View, which allows you to look at locations from street level, and public transit directions. More details after the fold...
