Larry Ellison joins the Apple doomsayers camp, here’s why he’s disillusioned

Apart from being one of the richest entrepreneurs on the planet, the Silicon Valley billionaire and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison is also known as a long-time friend of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. The two men go a long way back and shared a passion for minimalism, spirituality and unconventional managerial style.

The one notable exception, of course, being Ellison's penchant for spending his fortunes on expensive yachts and houses and indulging himself in otherworldly pleasures.

So should you be worried after hearing Steve's personal friend openly suggest that Apple can't thrive without its legendary co-founder because "we already know" Apple is doomed without Steve because "we conducted the experiment" before?

In a word, no...

Skype iOS apps now support HD quality video calls via iPad 4 and iPhone 5

Microsoft-owned Skype has been giving their iOS apps some much-needed love lately. For example, following June's announcement of Skype Video Messages, the company has updated mobile and desktop apps with the ability to record and send short videos to your contacts, even when offline. The feature was previously available with a 20-message limit and imposed a three-minute ceiling on the length of individual video messages.

Today, the iPhone and iPad Skype app has been updated with various call quality improvements and general fixes, including the ability to make HD quality 720p video calls from the latest and fastest iOS devices, such a the fourth-generation iPad and the iPhone 5...

CBS updates Sports iOS app with live video and native iPad interface

Sports fans know about the excellent Sports iPhone app from the U.S. broadcast network CBS. Unfortunately, for far too long has this nice piece of software remained an iPhone/iPod touch-only affair, with no native support for iPad devices.

In a 'better late than never' move, CBS has today issued a major version 6.0 update which for the first time brings the full tablet experience and live video to the iPad.

This means you can now check out on-demand video highlights of past games or tune in to live sporting events from your iPad and AirPlay the show to your TV set through the Apple TV set-top box...

Video of Pixar founder as he accepts Steve Jobs’ Disney Legends Award

Back in July, Disney announced that it was going to be honoring Steve Jobs with a Disney Legend Award. The award is the media conglomerate’s highest and most coveted honor, and is reserved for extraordinary visionaries and artists.

Well the award ceremony was held yesterday, in the D23 Expo Arena at the Anaheim Convention Center. And when Pixar founder John Lasseter took the stage to accept the Legend award on Steve Jobs' behalf, he gave quite the speech....

Apple to unveil new iPhone at September 10th event

Apple will take the wraps off of its next generation iPhone, believed to be the iPhone 5S, on September 10, according to a new report from The WSJ-owned AllThingsD. The blog says that sources have confirmed the company is planning a media event for the date.

While we haven't seen near the amount of "leaked" parts for the new iPhone as we have for the rumored budget model or the iPad 5, we still think we have a pretty good idea what to expect: a familiar-looking device with internal upgrades and an improved camera...

Popular ‘ayecon’ jailbreak theme goes on sale for $0.99

One of the most popular, and arguably one of the best jailbreak themes of all time is now on sale. For the first time since its inception, ayecon, the groundbreaking Retina enabled theme for the iPhone is available for just $0.99.

It's hard to believe, but it's been over a year since ayecon was initially released on Cydia. I think it's safe to say that the theme has aged well, and adequately stands the test of time.

Microsoft now takes swipes at iPad mini

Wow, there's just no stopping Microsoft's marketing people in their anti-iPad crusade. As it’s done several times this summer, the Windows giant yesterday posted a Surface commercial which predictably takes swipes at Apple's full-size iPad, criticizing its $499 asking price, lack of SD card slot and limited Office compatibility (go figure).

You'd have think Microsoft's ad agency would not release another iPad bashing commercial until next week. Much to our surprise, however, a mere 24 hours later a new commercial has surfaced on YouTube, this time on Microsoft's WindowsVideos channel.

And for the first time, the software giant is targeting the iPad mini by pitting Acer's 8.1-inch Iconia W3 tablet against Apple's popular 7.9-inch $329 device. I've included the ad for your viewing pleasure right after the break...

New iOS video editing app MixBit by YouTube creators now available for download

YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen on Thursday launched a brand new video editing app for the iPhone and iPod touch called MixBit. The software builds on the popularity of Twitter's Vine and Instagram Video by giving you the power to easily combine short video snippets called "bits" into a longer video that plays seamlessly even though the individual "bits" are store as independent elements. It's a lot of fun and already catching on with early adopters so jump past the fold for the full reveal...

‘VideoPane’ updated with fixed Netflix support, settings pane, and more

Last night we brought you a video walkthrough of the just released VideoPane tweak. The initial release, which allows users to detach video for multitasking while watching video, was solid, yet contained a few lingering issues.

The first big issue was the lack of Netflix support. In all actuality the Netflix support was there, but it didn't work with the latest version of Netflix. The update also adds a much needed dedicated settings pane to the fray.

There are quite a few additional changes for VideoPane 1.0.1. Have a look at the full change log inside.
