My iPhone 4 was finally unlocked by AT&T

So it took a while, but I can confirm that my iPhone 4 has been officially unlocked by the fine folks at AT&T. It looks like my online chat with the AT&T representative paid off after all.

All I had to do was pop in my T-Mobile SIM and load up iTunes. I was then presented with a beautiful message that stated: Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked.

Oddly enough, this unlock has nothing to do with the SAM unlock method that was revealed earlier this morning. This is a follow up to AT&T's promise to unlock out of contract iPhones...

How to unlock any jailbroken iPhone on iOS 5.0 or later on any baseband [Video]

Unlocking the iPhone 4S, and the iPhone 4 just got a whole lot easier thanks to the SAM package unlock revealed earlier this morning.

After alerting you guys to the news, we went into out labs and started testing this for ourselves. After a few failures, we were finally able to come up with a reliable method for making this work every time.

The good news is that this will likely become even easier as time goes on, and needless steps are eliminated. We're already to the point where we can switch back and forth between our AT&T SIM card and our T-Mobile SIM card without having to reconfigure anything. It's pretty awesome.

T-Mobile says it welcomes unlocked AT&T iPhone users with open arms

Last week we heard a rumor that AT&T was going to start unlocking out-of-contract iPhones over the weekend. And sure enough, on Sunday we were able to confirm that this was indeed the carrier's new policy. We even showed you how to do it.

So now that you've unlocked your handset, you're probably wondering what the benefits are. Well aside from the improved resale value and the ability to use your iPhone abroad, you can take the device with you to another, less expensive, carrier.

In fact, it sounds like T-Mobile would welcome you with open arms...

T-Mobile 4G network will be compatible with the iPhone

In a blog post published today, T-Mobile CTO confirms what we already heard last month: the company is working hard on upgrading its network to fully support the iPhone:

A nice side benefit of the refarming effort is that our 4G network will be compatible with a broader range of devices, including the iPhone. The other important benefit of our network modernization effort is the coverage improvements it will deliver, especially when it comes to in-home coverage.

It would sure be a welcome gesture for the one million T-Mobile customers who currently have to use their iPhone at 2G speeds.

How to unlock the iPhone 4S using the R-SIM interposer

I'll admit that I've never used a Gevey SIM interposer, or anything like it in the past, but I figured I'd give it a shot with the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 4S has its own special SIM interposer called the R-SIM II Ultra S, which was recently released.

I'm happy to report that this is by far the easiest method for "unlocking" your iPhone 4S, and using it with T-Mobile or virtually any other GSM carrier. And guess what, no jailbreak is required.

T-Mobile looking to upgrade its network to fully support the iPhone

For the last several months, T-Mobile has been talking about how it wants the iPhone. Now, after watching nearly a million customers jump ship last quarter, it's looking like T-Mobile needs the iPhone.

During its earnings call, for the holiday quarter, T-Mobile cited 'not carrying the iPhone' as a major factor in its recent poor performance. But the carrier is looking to change that as soon as possible...

With no iPhone, T-Mobile lost nearly a million customers last quarter

After AT&T backed out of its T-Mobile acquisition last year, a lot of folks wondered what the future would hold for the Deutsche Telekom-owned carrier. Fast forward two and a half months later, and things are not looking good.

T-Mobile noted this morning that its last quarter was one of the toughest in company history. With no iPhone, and a questionable future, nearly a million of its subscribers jumped ship during the three month period...

T-Mobile Working on Improving Support for Unlocked iPhones

You gotta feel for T-Mobile — it's had a rough couple of months. Not only has the company's AT&T merger deal fallen through the cracks, but it continues to be excluded from iPhone partnership.

When Sprint picked up the iPhone last October, T-Mobile became the only major carrier in the US to not officially offer Apple's popular handset. But that hasn't stopped it from supporting the device...

Over Half of the Smartphones Verizon Sold Last Quarter Were iPhones

Verizon announced its quarterly figures for the end of 2011, with the iPhone effect in full swing for the America's largest mobile phone carrier.

Despite tough competition from both AT&T and Sprint, Verizon saw its best figures for subscriber additions for three years, with an extra 1.5 million customers now on board.

With 4.2 million iPhones reportedly shipped during the same period it isn't too far a stretch to suggest that Apple's smartphone may well have helped Verizon along in that achievement...

T-Mobile Explains Why It Doesn’t Offer the iPhone

T-Mobile CEO Philipp Humm recently explained why the iPhone is not capable of running on his 3G network, despite earlier claims that iPhone users were able to establish an intermittent 3G connection in certain areas of the United States.

Humm told AllThingsD that frequency band incompatibility is the main reason the iPhone isn't able to use high-speed data on T-Mobile, and that the carrier hopes to resolve this issue in the near future.

What Does the Failed AT&T Merger Mean for T-Mobile?

After the FCC joined the Department of Justice in announcing its public disapproval of the AT&T/T-Mobile merger last month, we figured the deal was as good as dead. And after a few weeks of trying to find a workaround, AT&T has finally figured it out as well.

As we reported yesterday, the carrier has just announced that it has decided to completely withdraw its offer to purchase the Deutsche Telekom-owned operator. This is obviously great news for Sprint and other small carriers, but what does it mean for T-Mobile?

AT&T Pulls Out of T-Mobile Buyout

And there we have it, folks. The love affair between AT&T and T-Mobile is finally over, with the former confirming today that it has pulled out of a proposed deal to buy the latter from its parent company, Deutsche Telekom.

The news comes as both the FCC and DOJ voiced concerns over the potential buyout, with many industry insiders believing there was no way AT&T was going to be able to force a deal through with so much opposition.

Today AT&T finally gave up on the deal that would have given it a considerable leg-up with regards to increased spectrum. The real kicker? AT&T will have to pay T-Mobile $4 billion as part of the breakup, though questions will still remain as to whether T-Mobile will be able to continue in the long term.
