In addition to a host of updates to its various iOS apps, Apple following today's iPad keynote has released the Safari 6.1 update, bringing some of the features that are part of the free OS X Mavericks update to Mountain Lion Macs. These include the Shared Links feature, the new Sidebar and Power Saver which improves battery performance when browsing plug-in heavy web pages on notebook systems...

OS X Mavericks will be available today for Free

Per the norm, Apple went through its routine of recapping many of the notable features available on its updated operating system. Craig Federighi took the stage to provide a recap, along with performing a demo showcasing iBooks, Maps, Finder tags, Safari Notifications, and more.

Although none of that is news to those of us who've been following OS X Mavericks since WWDC 2013, there is one piece of important info that hasn't been revealed until now — the price and release date. Just a few minutes ago, Apple revealed that OS X Mavericks would be free starting today!

Apple to devs: send us your Mavericks apps

Apple has begun sending email notices asking its registered Mac developers to submit their OS X Mavericks-optimized apps. The timing of the communique is especially eyebrow-raising given the October 22 media event invites went out today as "we still have a lot to cover".

Jumping ahead of oneself, one might conclude this signals an imminent Mavericks release. In reality, it'd clearly make more sense to release Mavericks alongside the refreshed Mac notebooks.

For what it's worth, a source that stepped forward this morning has pinpointed an October 24 or 25 release date for the upcoming Haswell-based MacBook Pros...

iPad event pegged for October 22

According to AllThingsD, the reliable technology blog operated by The Wall Street Journal, Apple will be holding an iPad focused event exactly two weeks from today, on October 22. Now, Apple typically likes to run its big media events on Tuesdays and October 22 is a Tuesday. It's also six days before Apple's upcoming fiscal 2013 fourth quarter earnings release so it should be a boon for the stock price.

And as per the obligatory "people familiar with Apple’s plans" (read: Apple's public relations department), the invitation-only event will focus on new iPads, though new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks should get some stage time as well...

Apple starts work on iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 Syrah

Four days ago, the software reached a Golden Master status indicating it's now reached the stage where it's good enough to be distributed and installed on everyday computers. The company has also reshuffled its software teams to focus on its next major releases, iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 code-named Syrah after a dark-skinned grape grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce red wine...

Apple starts training support staff on OS X Mavericks ahead of impending release

The AppleCare support staff has begun official OS X Mavericks training in anticipation of the looming OS X Mavericks release, a reliable blog has learned. The upcoming Mac desktop operating system release should hit the Mac App Store before November and will bring a host of improvements and new features, including Maps integration across desktop and mobile, better handling of notifications, and several new features for power users. Apple first demoed OS X Mavericks at its summer developer conference in June 2013...

Apple's OS X 10.8.5, better known as Mountain Lion, represents the company's ninth major release of the OS X desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. The company has been testing a fifth update to Mountain Lion for some time and today released the software for public consumption.

Better Xsan reliability and fixes for Wi-Fi issues are also part of this update. It's available now through the Software Update option on the Mac menu or via the Mac App Store's Updates tab...

Apple could release OS X Mavericks late-October

Fans have been kinda keeping their fingers crossed for a September release of OS X Mavericks ever since Apple at June's WWDC formally announced the new version of the desktop operating system for Macs. The guiding logic was that the company would need to release both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks simultaneously because the two releases complement each another. For example, Mavericks with its native Maps app lets you create a route and send it wirelessly to your iPhone for navigation.

Or, reading a notification on your iOS device now automatically clears it on your Mac and all of the other devices. However, a reliable blogger now quotes sources with knowledge of the launch plans as claiming that OS X 10.9 Mavericks is due at the end of October so Apple could "focus the majority of its software engineering resources on pushing out iOS 7 alongside the new iPhone hardware over the next couple of weeks"...

Showcased during June's WWDC keynote, iBooks for Mac brings the iOS reading experience to the Mac, down to turning pages with a swipe, zooming in on images with a pinch and scrolling from cover to cover. One developer took to YouTube to share his experience with iBooks for Mac beta, the video is right after the break...
