iPhone 4S and Nokia Lumia 800 Browser Performance Benchmarked [Video]

Geeks really like benchmarks — they're one of the best ways to compare hardware speeds, and things are no different in the world of smartphones.

With the aim of comparing the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and Nokia's Windows Phone 7-powered Lumia 800, YouTube user 359gsm set about running a selection of web-based benchmarks to see just which of the three phones is the quickest when it comes to rendering web pages.

The iPhone 4S did particularly well in the tests, with the older iPhone 4 more than holding its own, too...

Nokia's got it all figured out. See, youths don't really want to buy an iPhone, it's just so boring. Android isn't quite what buyers are looking for, either. Teens just don't understand what Google has put in front of them. How could they?

Those are the views of outspoken Nokia director of Portfolio, Product Marketing & Sales Niels Munksgaard in an interview with Pocket-Lint. Apparently, he even managed to say it with a straight face!

According to Nokia's man, what do you think is the ideal platform for the youth of today? Windows Phone 7, of course!

10% of US Mobile Subscribers Own iPhones

A new survey carried about by comScore claims that only 1 out of 10 American mobile subscribers own an iPhone, with Apple's handset reaching the 10.8% mark as of October 2011.

The survey also suggests that Samsung is currently the top OEM in the country, with their phones currently in the hands of a quarter of all cellphone owners.

In fact, of the top five OEMs in comScore's chart, Apple sits fourth, behind Samsung (25.5%), LG (20.6%) and Motorola (13.6%). Canadian firm Research In Motion takes fifth place with an ever-decreasing share of the market. Not great times for BlackBerry fans at all...

The iPhone Accounts for Over Half of the Entire Mobile Phone Industry’s Profits

Apple's iPhone accounts for 52% of the overall profits for the entire mobile phone industry, according to a new report by Cannacord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley. The iPhone consisted of more than half of the industry's profits in the last business quarter.

The iPhone 4S is expected to push Apple's share of the mobile industry's profits to 60% in the final quarter of 2011. According to the report, the iPhone 4S was the best-selling handset on Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint for the month of October.

Nokia Unveils the Lumia 800 Running Windows Phone 7

You don't hear this often at iDB, but Nokia just released an interesting smartphone line. The Lumia 800 and Lumina 710 were announced today, and both phones demonstrate Nokia's attempt at getting back into the smartphone game with the Windows Phone 7 OS.

Focusing on the flagship Lumina 800 handset, Nokia is making some very interesting choices to distinguish itself from the likes of Apple and the iPhone. It's nice to see some attractive handsets out there that may end up offering the iPhone some competition...

Apple to Sell More Phones than Anyone Else in 2011

Today, Digitimes published a forecast reporting that Apple will sell a staggering 86.4 million iPhones in 2011, blowing past Nokia to become the world's leading smartphone vendor. Apple is slated to see a 82% increase in shipments from the 47.5 million units shipped in 2010.

It was recently announced that Apple had already overtaken Nokia globally in terms of units manufactured, and Apple is also projected to overtake the Finnish juggernaut in shipment volume by year's end...

Nokia is in an interesting position right now. Just a few short years ago they found themselves as nearly untouchable at the top of the wireless industry. But the Finnish company has struggled to keep up with new competition from Apple and Android handset-makers.

Bleeding smartphone sales, CEO Stephen Elop and company were forced to make a drastic decision. After several years of development, Nokia announced earlier this year that it would be dropping Symbian OS in favor of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.

Apple is Number One Smartphone Manufacturer in US

A new report from Nielsen says that Apple is the number one smartphone vendor in the US, while Android remains the most popular mobile operating system. This research follows Apple's last earnings call, in which it was announced that 20 million iPhones were sold in the last business quarter.

Following Apple's dominance in the US is, surprisingly, Motorola. Samsung actually placed third, with both Motorola and Samsung owning a huge percentage of the Android market. Essentially, Apple moves more hardware while Android gets installed on more handsets.

Apple's iPhone is continuing its assault on the smartphone world, with the relative newcomer slapping down another mobile giant when it comes to ad impressions in Europe.

A report coming out of InMobi suggests that Apple's little phone-that-could has streaked past the old foe, Nokia, with the Finish company still reeling from a less than stellar last 12 months.

Apple saw its iPhone gain 3.3 points and rise to 19.5% of all European ad data, while Nokia saw its own results fall almost one point to 18.7%...

Stephen Elop is a canadian executive who is now in charge of Nokia, the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones. They sell millions of phones per day, but the models they sell are low cost devices, sold for the most part in developing countries. In the past few years, Nokia's share of the smartphone market plummeted form 49% to 25% due to the overwhelming growth of both Android and the iPhone.

Now, at Nokia, they are facing the worst crisis they've ever dealt with. They lost 75% of their market value and will be forced to let a lot of their best engineers go...
