Kik Messenger app updated for iOS 7 with new design, stickers and more

Adding to our growing list of iOS 7 updates, the Kik Messenger client for iPhone received a refresh last night, bringing it to version 6.7. The update brings the app's design more in line with the all-new firmware.

Kik's entire UI has been given the usual iOS 7 treatment, with fewer borders, flatter graphics and text, and empty white spaces. And the developers also gave it a new sticker package and stability improvements...

Screenies of WhatsApp iOS 7 update leak

As WhatsApp continues to shrug off competition from not only Viber, but also Apple's iMessage, Microsoft's Skype and even Google's Hangouts, the instant messaging space continues to burst with activity.

However, WhatsApp - arguably the most popular cross-platform instant messaging solution - has yet to update its iPhone client with iOS 7 look and feel.

Even though we don't know when that update might drop, we have a pretty good idea of how the iOS 7-inspired application might look like thanks to iOS developer @HackiPhone who tweeted out a couple of work-in-progress screenies...

Faster Facebook Messenger with improved scrolling now available

It's been over a month since we've stumbled upon any solid piece of news concerning Facebook's standalone Messenger iPhone app. Last time we heard, Facebook has added the ability to pick photos from your Instagram albums to send to Messenger friends.

Actually, that was the only major development concerning the software since May 2012. In response to Wednesday's launch of iOS 7, the social networking giant on Monday pushed an iOS 7-ready version of Messenger with improved scrolling, faster startup times and more...

‘Cate’ combines Gmail, Twitter and other services into one unified messaging app

I hate email. Even with innovative apps like Mailbox, I'd rather iMessage or talk with someone on Twitter than email back and forth with them. There's subject lines, headers, signatures, and loads of other useless text—it's just all way too complicated.

I would be willing to reconsider my predisposition, though, if an application like this one ever makes it to market. It's called 'Cate,' and in addition to being gorgeous, it promises to make communication easier with direct Gmail messaging and more...

WhatsApp update brings back the ability to send longer videos

WhatsApp users will be happy to hear that the popular messaging service has updated its iOS client this afternoon. The update brings the app to version 2.11.3 and includes new features and improvements.

Most of the improvements have to do with the recently-added voice messaging feature, particularly in regards to accessibility, but perhaps the biggest change is that you can once again send longer videos...

Google removing Messenger from Google+ apps

Another Google service has bit the dust as the Internet giant announces it will be removing Messenger from Google+ for Android and iOS over the coming days. OBviously, as the focus turns to Hangouts, Messenger is no longer needed. Granted, the writing's been on the wall ever since Google released Hangouts for iOS and Android back in May, its answer to the unification of the many Google chat services under a brand new moniker...

Skype iOS apps now support HD quality video calls via iPad 4 and iPhone 5

Microsoft-owned Skype has been giving their iOS apps some much-needed love lately. For example, following June's announcement of Skype Video Messages, the company has updated mobile and desktop apps with the ability to record and send short videos to your contacts, even when offline. The feature was previously available with a 20-message limit and imposed a three-minute ceiling on the length of individual video messages.

Today, the iPhone and iPad Skype app has been updated with various call quality improvements and general fixes, including the ability to make HD quality 720p video calls from the latest and fastest iOS devices, such a the fourth-generation iPad and the iPhone 5...

WhatsApp adds unlimited voice messaging

WhatsApp is arguably the most popular cross-platform mobile messaging solution out there and while it currently lacks a desktop client (unlike its rival Viber), it's just become a whole lot more useful by introducing a significant new feature: voice memos, a pet project of its CEO over the past six months.

Unlike Facebook's Messenger iOS app that requires three taps to make a voice recording, it only takes a single tap to record and send a voice memo in WhatsApp. And no, it's not a staggered release: the new WhatsApp with push-to-record voice messaging is available now simultaneously on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Nokia...

BlackBerry Messenger beta for iOS and Android invites rolling out

The long-rumored BlackBerry Messenger is finally launching on iOS and Android before the end of summer (so before September 22). It looks like the software is coming along nicely as Canada's embattled smartphone maker has started rolling out invites to a small number of users on its Beta Zone website, asking them to test out the Android and iOS versions of the software...

Viber update brings ‘seen’ status, photo doodles, new emoticons and more

The popular cross-platform instant messaging software Viber has been updated to version 3.1, bringing a few noteworthy improvements.

In addition to fun new emoticons and a new 'Seen' status that lets you know when your messages have been seen, Viber version 3.1 features expanded support for the Viber Desktop application on Windows and Mac.

If you have the desktop app on your Mac or Windows PC, you can can now seamlessly transfer a call in progress from your iPhone to your desktop. There are other improvements in this Viber update as well, mentioned right after the break...

Kik Messenger app updated with stickers, third-party games and more

Kik users will be happy to hear that a major update for the iOS client has posted to the App Store this morning. The update, which brings the popular messaging app to version 6.5, hops on the recent stickers trend, adds third-party games, and more.

The stickers in Kik 6.5 work just like you'd expect them to—you can embed the emoticon-like images into any of your conversations. And as far as the third-party game offerings go, launch titles include new releases by both Zynga and TreSensa...

Enormously popular WhatsApp goes free: gains iCloud chat backups and other features

WhatsApp, arguably the most popular cross-platform chatting solution, has just gone free on the App Store. We're not sure whether the move is part of the upcoming iOS subscription switch or if there was a change of heart.

Either way, we're not complaining. Previously a 99-cent download, WhatsApp for the iPhone and iPod touch is now provided free of charge (jump past the fold for the fine print).

In addition, the app's been updated with the much-needed ability to back up your chats to iCloud so you don't loose your chat history upon reinstalling WhatsApp. Other changes in WhatsApp 2.10.1 include support for URL schemes and the ability to send multiple photos at the same time...
