TapToScroll: add additional status bar scroll behavior to iOS

In iOS you can quickly scroll up to the top of a page by tapping on the status bar. This is an extremely convenient shortcut, one that I always sorely miss when I have to use an Android device.

But sometimes I wonder why there isn't a way to quick scroll to the bottom of a page. I mean, there's a page up and a page down key on a standard keyboard for a reason.

Since there's probably no hope that we'll ever see such a shortcut appear natively in iOS, I am, once again, turning to the jailbreak community for help. Last night, I even went as far as to create a concept video for the idea, but as it turns out, that wasn't needed. It wasn't needed because a tweak already exists that pretty much accomplishes this exact need. That tweak is called TapToScroll for Activator, and it's available for free on Cydia's BigBoss repo right now.

MTerminal is a great replacement for Mobile Terminal

Since the realization that jailbroken devices can be permanently bricked, it's a good opportunity to remind you to change your iPhone's root password. Using a terminal emulator makes changing the password a piece of cake. Unfortunately, the most popular terminal emulator hasn't been updated for iOS 8 or for newer devices like the iPhone 6.

Thankfully, there is a free alternative terminal emulator available in Cydia, and it's actually a fork of Mobile Terminal. Entitled MTerminal, this lightweight Mobile Terminal alternative comes from developer lordscotland, and features iOS 8 support with optimization for big screen devices.

Beware: malicious packages could potentially brick your iPhone

Over the weekend, an interesting thread appeared on Reddit involving a new boot color changing mod. That mod, which came from developer @daytonhasty with lots of help from @xerub, wasn't in itself malicious, but if misapplied could render a perfectly good iOS device permanently useless.

Sadly, because directions on installing the mod weren't followed to a tee, some users were greeted with an expensive paperweight. On the heels of such a revelation, another developer has created a proof of concept tweak that shows how someone with malicious intent could fool jailbreakers into installing a package that renders their device useless.

SwitcherFX adds a blur effect to the cards in the App Switcher

If you're looking to add more privacy to the cards found in the App Switcher, then SwitcherFX is mostly capable of fulfilling that task. It's a new jailbreak tweak that allows you to add a privacy blur filter on top of the app preview cards that appear in the App Switcher. It also features several degrees of App Switcher and blur customization.

Aoraki a multi-functional virtual button tweak that tries too hard

Aoraki is a newly released jailbreak tweak that places a virtual button on the screen at all times. This button allows you to access a heaping helping of functions ranging from file sharing to Twitter quick compose shortcuts. In other words, Aoraki, is the equivalent of a swiss army knife when it comes to jailbreak tweaks. It's the proverbial jack of all trades, but master of none.

11 tweaks to look over this weekend

A week just ended, and a new one is starting, which gives us an opportunity to look at what was released on Cydia during the last few days. Once again, the trend gets clearer as less and less jailbreak tweaks are being released, something that we've been confirming every week for the past several weeks. This week we've go 11 tweaks for you to look at.

QR Mode turns the stock Camera app into an awesome QR code reader

In some countries, like Japan for example, QR codes are prolific and people user them often. Although that's not the case in the United States, and probably never will be, it does seem like there has been an uptick in QR code usage in the last few years. A new jailbreak tweak called QR Mode will certainly help its cause, among jailbreakers at least.

QR Mode is by far the best looking and best functioning QR code reader on Cydia, and it's even better than standalone app offerings found in the App Store. Its feature set is well-rounded, its implementation seriously impressive, and it doesn't feel overly intrusive. Although it suffers from a few bugs, QR Mode is well worth its $1.99 asking price, especially if these bugs can be stamped out.

PhotoRes: adjust the aspect ratio of photos taken with the Camera app

Notice the interesting aspect ratio of this photo? This was done on the fly using PhotoRes, a free new jailbreak tweak available on Cydia's BigBoss repo.

PhotoRes allows users to select from over a dozen pre-defined aspect ratios along with adjusting the resolution of photos taken with the stock Camera app. Once the settings are established, you can begin taking photos using the changes immediately, as no pesky resprings are required.

CrazyClock: speed up the Clock app icon animation on the Home screen

Before iOS 7, a jailbreak tweak was required to have an animated Clock app icon on the Home screen. That, of course, changed with iOS 7, as Apple ushered in its own version of the animated clock icon.

CrazyClock takes Apple's animated app icon and does some pretty interesting things with it. It can significantly speed up the animated hands on the clock, and even make the hands move in a counter-clockwise direction.
