GreenPois0n First Impressions: the 4.1 Bugs

As soon as the Mac version of GreenPois0n came out, I went ahead and jailbroke my device. It wasn't the same eye-candy that JailbreakMe was, or even Comex's first jailbreak, but it worked and I didn't have to wait long. Here's a few quick things that I immediately noticed.

LockScreen PIN Delay

After a fresh reboot or a respring, I can no longer dive right in to tap the PIN to access my device. The problem is either a delay or the first tap or two is not recognized. But it definitely slows me down a little bit...

Zero Out iPhone Free Space with iWipe

iWipe is a utility that zeros out free space on iDevices.

A common misconception about storage devices is when a file is deleted, it's permanently deleted. This is not correct. Only the reference to that space on the storage device is removed preserving the real data on the sectors of the drive. The same concept applies when you restore your iDevice. This is called a low level format.

Last year, I heard reports that Apple was issuing refurbished 3GS devices with data of the previous owner still preserved. Whether this was rumor or fact, I didn't want to risk selling my devices with the risk of my personal data still preserved...

I love the iPhone. Really I do. I love most everything about it. Most. But like any other iDevice geek, I have found some less than desirable aspects of the iPhone, namely tone alerts.

Imagine walking into a crowded coffee shop. Now imagine someone with their iPhone volume turned all the way up and that particular someone receives an SMS. With the default SMS [tri-tone] sound, odds are some owners of iPhones in the coffee shop will glance at their screen to verify whether it's them or not. In a nutshell, every stock iPhone on the planet has the same tri-tone sound when it comes SMS. Boring huh?

FullScreen for Safari Adds Multitouch Functionality to Your iPhone Browsing Experience

Even with plenty of browser alternatives out there, I always find myself going back to Safari. There's just something aesthetically pleasing about Apple's stock browser that keeps me coming back, even though it's totally devoid of some basic features.

For this reason, whenever I hear about any tweaks that add additional functionality to Safari, I'm all over it like white on rice. The latest tweak to come out of the jailbreak community is called FullScreen for Safari, and it packs quite the punch.

LockInfo: iOS LockScreen and Notification Panel

One of the pitfalls of Apple iOS is the lack of a good notification system. By notification system, I mean a panel where one can view all their notifications in a consolidated panel, much like the notification panel of Android OS.

Instead, we have a system that, with every pushed notification, you get a popup alert, a sound and a badge on the application icon which presents itself as a useless system once you dismiss the popup alert. Once the popup is gone, the risk of forgetting the notification opens up.

LockInfo, by David Ashman, picks up where Apple slacks by providing us with a very useful notification panel that can be set as your lockscreen, your first Springboard page and/or a panel activated by Activator (known as InfoShade). The latter provides Android-like functionality with a panel available from any screen, whether from within an open app or not...

ActionMenu Voice Plugin Lets Your iPhone Really Speak Its Mind

Sometimes it seems as if the iPhone truly has a mind of its own, and now with the latest plugin for ActionMenu, your iPhone can speak its mind as well. Who needs to read all of the time anyway? ActionMenu Voice plugin gets rid of the need to read by making transcribing quick, easy, and effortless.

Okay, so I was being facetious about the reading part. Reading's great, in fact we highly recommend it here at iDB, but it is cool to know that the option to transcribe is right at your fingertips. And you know what the best part about all of this is? It won't cost you a dime.

Action Menu Wishlist: 10 Requests

Need a reason to jailbreak? If SBSettings isn't enough of a reason, Action Menu sure is. Being my favorite jailbreak tweak, I now dream up ways that it can make the iPhone's interaction with selected text even better. And it has an SDK, so anything's possible, even though the developer is not taking requests.

Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 Coming Soon, Promises Syncing Over 3G

Wi-Fi Sync is a $9.99 app in Cydia that syncs your iOS device over wi-fi with iTunes. You can read more about the app here. A couple of months ago the developer of Wi-Fi sync tweeted that he was working on Wi-Fi Sync 2.0, which would include wireless syncing over 3G and VPN. Yesterday he announced the beta signup for Wi-Fi Sync 2.0. I can't wait to get my hands on it...

LiveClock App Updated for iOS 4.0

Here's a neat little jailbreak tweak that's finally jumped on the 4.0 bandwagon. LiveClock makes your home screen clock icon - you guessed it - live! The second-hand ticks along, and the icon displays your current time rather than it being eternally 10:15 on the dot.

It might be tiny but it's accurate, and that's what counts! It looks pretty sharp on the Retina Display, too...

Mark Read Helps Keep Your iPhone’s Inbox Looking Good
