iPad has grown three times faster than iPhone

It's easy to get caught in the trap of assuming the iPhone is Apple's fastest-growing product. Although the iPhone sold more units than the iPad - after all, it's been available since 2007 whereas the iPad debuted three years later - the Apple tablet is growing three times faster than the iPhone.

This is just one of the many interesting factoids from Internet Trends, an annual report on the state of the Internet, mobile and social by Mary Meeker, one of the world's top Internet analysts. Read on for more tidbits...

Another iPad 5 front panel leaks (update: debunked)

A new image has popped up on a reliable Chinese web site, showing what appears to be a front panel for Apple's upcoming fifth-generation iPad. Matching up previous leaks, the part features skinnier side bezels that Apple first tried on the iPad mini. The part has holes for the FaceTime front camera and the Home button in the same position as the iPad mini’s bezel, along with the touchscreen connector.

Update: as pointed out by the French blog NowhereElse.fr, the image depicts an iPad mini digitizer. Move along folks, nothing to see here...

Aspyr releases Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for iPad

Nine days ago, Mac games developer Aspyr inadvertently told customers in an email communication that "the critically-acclaimed Star Wars RPG is now available on iPad." Following that "leak," Aspyr today released Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the App Store.

The iPad-only title is based on BioWare's classic 2003 RPG game and includes unique characters, creatures, vehicles and planets.

On top of that, you get to choose from nine customizable characters, use over 40 different Force powers, roam odd planets and vast galaxies and much, much more. If you're a Star Wars fan, this one's a no-brainer...

Alleged case video depicts reduced iPad 5 width and height

A rather credible Vietnamese publication has posted a video Thursday which purportedly depicts a case thought to have been designed for Apple's next-generation full-size iPad, the iPad 5. Now, rumor mills expect the next iPad to adopt the iPad mini's narrow side bezels and thinner appearance.

Although iDB couldn't confirm the authenticity of the video at press time, it does indicate that narrower side bezels on the iPad 5 could result in a device that's both narrower and has slightly reduced height compared to the current-generation iPad 4...

New hacked Verizon carrier update promises faster data speeds

iPhone 4s

Over the past month or so, we've seen hacked carrier updates released for both T-Mobile and AT&T. The modded firmware files were posted with the promise of improving data speeds in iPhones, and iPads with built-in cellular capabilities.

Don’t expect new iPhones or iPads at WWDC

There has been some commotion in the past 24 hours concerning a comment Tim Cook made during his D:11 talk last evening. Specifically, when asked to talk about Apple's next big thing, tight-lipped Cook wouldn't budge and instead reminded the audience that Apple's June 10 keynote at the upcoming WWDC 2013 will be a launchpad for the next versions of iOS and OS X operating systems

"What I can say is that we have our developer conference in less than two weeks," he said. "We’re going to be rolling out the future of iOS and OS X and we’re all super excited to do that." Some commenters were quick to interpret Cook's comment as a sign that WWDC after all might see a new iOS device launch. Not so fast, warns the prominent and very reliable blogger Jim Darlymple, known for his deep Apple connections...

WSJ: Foxconn rival Pegatron is primary budget iPhone manufacturer

We first heard from The New York Times that the world's top contract manufacturer Foxconn is looking past the iPhone amid Apple's slowing growth. Reuters previously ran an anti-Apple piece which asserted that Tim Cook & Co. are looking to shift from Foxconn to rival Pegatron, which currently builds the older iPhone 4/4S models.

On Monday, The Wall Street Journal ran a story claiming Foxconn is looking to manufacture, market and sell its own mobile accessories compatible with iOS devices. Moreover, the story goes, Foxconn is said to be expanding its high-margin retail operations and investing in content and services.

Today, the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper sheds more light on the subject, claiming Cook has re-shuffled Apple's supply chain and re-iterating that Pegatron will be the "primary assembler" of Apple's rumored low-cost iPhone, which the Journal expects to be offered "later this year"...

Apple updates iTunes Movie Trailers with Fandango integration and improved playback

Apple hasn't done much with iTunes Movie Trailers since it released it in late 2011. The app, much like Flickster, offers up movie previews, reviews, showtimes, and other useful information regarding feature films.

Today, however, it broke its silence and posted a significant update for Trailers. The release, which brings the app to version 1.2.3, includes several improvements like Fandango integration, better playback, and more...

Tim Cook says Apple will open iOS up more for third party developers

Earlier this year, well known iOS developer and hacker pod2g made some comments on Twitter regarding the 'openness' of iOS. He argued that there are no technical obstacles barring Apple from offering iOS devs more freedom, so it should consider opening it up.

And a lot of folks agreed with him. Not only did the hashtag 'WeWantAnOpeniOS' hit trending status on Twitter, but more than 11,000 people signed the corresponding petition. Well it appears that someone at Apple was listening, because Tim Cook says that's the plan...
