Apple bashing earns New York Times a Pulitzer

Remember how Apple's use of Chinese factories to produce its iPad was the focus of attention during 2012? Well, so did members of the Pulitzer committee, which Monday awarded a 2013 Pulitzer Prize to the New York Times.

The paper won critical awards for its iEconomy series, a nine-part look at the working conditions in Chinese factories producing the popular tablet. But was the series a "penetrating look into business practices by Apple," as the Pulitzer announcement claims, or simply a way to rehash a common practice by using the Apple brand as the foil?

WSJ: Microsoft to respond to Apple, Google with smartwatch, smartphone, mini Surface

As Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn recently began hiring workers for assembly of a next-gen iPhone and possibly a rumored budget iPhone, our friends over at Redmond are thought to be busy developing own branded smartwatch, smartphone and seven-inch Surface tablet. Both gadgets are viewed as direct responses to Apple's rumored iWatch project, its wildly successful smartphone and the iPad mini tablet, respectively.

The smartwatch project is purportedly beyond the prototyping phase as Microsoft is said to have started aligning parts suppliers in Asia earlier this year, allegedly sourcing 1.5-inch screens. However, folks who apparently saw the prototypes warn it's "unclear whether Microsoft will opt to move ahead with the watch" at this stage...

UK probing iOS in-app game purchases

That's the focus of a probe underway by the UK government, concerned that in-app purchases may unfairly target children. According to a BBC report, Office of Fair Trading (OFT) wants to hear from parents with the hope games developers will follow laws already on the books to protect children...

iPad 5: lighter and thinner thanks to tweaked display assembly

Several supply chain checks are now pointing to Apple's fifth-generation iPad being lighter and thinner over its predecessor, the iPad 4. According to one display expert, Apple will achieve the thinner appearance in a lighter device thanks to advancements in the display department. For starters, in reducing the size of LED backlighting and improving its efficiency, Apple engineers will be able to reduce the overall weight of the device. AT&T to light up LTE in 79 new markets by the end of summer

T-Mobile may be two years late to the LTE party, but it has some ambitious rollout plans for its 4G network. In a press release yesterday, the carrier said it hopes to cover 200 million+ subscribers with LTE by the end of 2013.

But not wanting to give up any ground to the Deutsche Telekom-owned company, AT&T announced today some enterprising rollout plans of its own. The carrier says it will add LTE to 79 new markets by the end of the summer...

Nearly half of U.S. teens own an iPhone, 62% are planning to buy one

Although it sometimes seems like every teen has an iPhone, we are not quite there, according to new research. Some 48 percent of teens say they own the Apple smartphone with 62 percent expecting to buy an iPhone as their next handset.

The 48 percent of teen-owned iPhones is up from 40 percent registered during fall 2012, according to Piper Jaffray's 25th bi-annual teen survey. Meanwhile, just over 20 percent of teens surveyed said they either own or plan to purchase a smartphone powered by Google's Android mobile operating software...

New report claims Microsoft Office landing on iOS next fall

Over the last several months, there's been a lot of talk regarding the potential for an iOS version of MS Office. Folks particularly want to see it land on the iPad, as research shows the move could be worth some $2.5 billion to Microsoft.

But despite all of the chatter, we have yet to see any indication that Office is on its way to Apple's mobile platform. And it doesn't look like we're going to anytime soon. A new report suggests the app suite won't land on iOS until next fall...

Alleged iPad 5 front part with narrower bezels leaks

Multiple reports have pointed to Apple's fifth-generation iPad adopting design cues of its little brother, the iPad mini. Wednesday, another evidence surfaced suggesting that the iPad 5 indeed has the skinnier side bezels much akin to the iPad mini. Additionally, the gizmo is said to also borrow the iPad mini's thin appearance, be lighter and resemble its aluminum design. Here's a pair of photographs said to depict the device's front panel which has reportedly leaked somewhere out of China...

Chrome for iOS updated with fullscreen iPhone browsing and new print options

Good news Chrome users, Google has updated its popular browser for iOS today. The update, which brings the app to version 26.0.1410.50, features a few handy new additions, including fullscreen browsing for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The app includes a few UI changes that make the new fullscreen browsing mode work, and a few new print and save options. Users can now print web pages with Google Cloud Print, or AirPrint, and save pages as PDF files to Google Drive...

Supply chain report says production of 5th gen iPad to start in July-August

As we move into mid-April, the odds of seeing Apple unveil a new product this spring continue to dwindle. It feels like we're getting close enough to its June developer conference, that any major announcements could wait until then.

There is, however, still a rumor floating around that Apple has plans for an iPad event later this month. But according to a new supply chain report, that's not going to happen, as 5th gen iPads won't go into production until the summer...

Famed Mac dev Panic teases mysterious iPad app, coming tomorrow

Panic is one of my favorite Mac developers, was even more so in the pre-iPhone days when top-notch Mac apps were somewhat few and far between.

Now, Panic has successfully transitioned itself to the world of concurrent Mac/iOS development, having released a very nice iOS SSH app aptly named Prompt.

And if you're a web developer, an iPad version of Coda is a must-have. The firm has kept mum on its future iOS releases, but they've been obviously working behind the scenes on a major new app. Both a tweet and the Panic web site now tease the upcoming software, with a ticker on panic.com reading "current status: this Wednesday, a brand new iPad app from Panic."
