FireCore releases iOS 5.1 jailbreak for Apple TV 2

Well that was fast. Not even 10 minutes after we published our post on the state of the iOS 5.1 Apple TV jailbreak, FireCore released a new version of its Seas0nPass utility that is compatible with the new software.

This means that folks with an Apple TV 2 can upgrade (if you haven't already) to the latest ATV firmware, which features the new user interface, and still keep their ability to jailbreak...

State of the Apple TV jailbreak [updated]

After going weeks without hearing any news regarding the jailbreak status of Apple's latest gadgets, we are finally starting to get some information. Earlier this morning we gave you an update on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak, and now we have news on the Apple TV.

Infamous ATV hacker and Chronic Dev Team member Bile published a blog post yesterday explaining the current state of the ATV jailbreak. He notes that while things look good for ATV 2 owners, they don't look so good for the new ATV 3...

Use ‘ClipboardEdit’ to edit your clipboard from Notification Center

Sometimes original ideas are hard to come by, whether you're a jailbreak developer, or an App Store developer.

For that reason I see tons of duplicate apps and tweaks that essentially replicate what has already been available.

With that in mind, even if I don't totally understand the purpose of a specific tweak, I still appreciate one that tries to do something different and original.

This is exactly how I feel about ClipboardEdit. It's a tweak that's certainly original, but I'm not exactly sure how I would use it, or why it would be even be needed...

Camera Grabber for iOS 5 video walkthrough

One of the biggest features of iOS 5.1 is the new Lock screen camera functionality. In fact, we dedicated a post and video exclusively to the new Lock screen camera.

The problem is this; if you're one of the many that wishes to maintain an untethered jailbreak, you can't enjoy the fruits of Apple's labor. This is because the 5.1 update kills your untethered jailbreak.

That's where Camera Grabber for iOS 5 comes into play. This is a jailbreak tweak that allows pre-5.1 devices to enjoy the same Lock screen camera functionality as iOS 5.1 users.

How does it work? Check inside for the answer...

Roughly 80% of iOS users are running on iOS 5 or later

Indie developer David Smith recently published some interesting statistics to his personal blog regarding the adoption rate of iOS versions 5.0 and later. Apple released iOS 5 last October, and has since seeded two incremental updates.

Smith pulled the data from the user base of his popular iOS app, Audiobooks. The app sees about 100 thousand downloads on a weekly basis, so admittedly, its users provide a nice little test market. Now, on to the numbers...

‘AppUpdateNotifier’ keeps you informed about App Store updates

First there was CydiaBulletin, and then there was the dead on arrival Aptdate. These jailbreak tweaks were conceptualized and/or created to provide notifications whenever an app or tweak had a pending updated waiting in Cydia.

Due to traffic concerns, it's unlikely that either of these tweaks will ever see the light of day. That's unfortunate, but it's the reality of the situation unless the developers can come up with a way that won't put too much stress on the repo servers.

But what about the App Store? This sort of functionality would be useful for pending App Store updates as well, would it not? Thankfully, someone was listening.

Check out our video walkthrough of AppUpdateNotifier, a jailbreak tweak that provides banner notifications when updates are waiting in the App Store...

[tube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zzdi1lO7V_w[/tube]

An exciting update to CardSwitcher has been issued on Cydia. If you remember our initial walkthough of the tweak, CardSwitcher is an alternative multitasking solution for iOS devices.

This latest update was totally rewritten for iOS 5, and includes live application views, updated swipe gestures, and a new grid mode aimed at iPad users.

Would you consider using the new and improved CardSwitcher? If so, you can find it on Cydia's BigBoss repo for $1.99, but it's a free update for existing customers.

What would Chuck Norris do? Ask Siri.

Although the whole Chuck Norris Facts meme has ran its course, apparantly there is a jailbreak developer that doesn't want to let it die.

Chuck Norris Facts for Chatbot is an AssistantExtensions plugin that will spout off Chuck Norris "facts" faster than Chuck Norris can roundhouse kick a saber-toothed tiger...

Apple credits “2012 iOS Jailbreak Dream Team” for kernel exploit

For those of you wondering whether or not Apple keeps close tabs on the jailbreak community, well, you can stop wondering. The company directly refers to jailbreakers on its new iOS 5.1 security content page.

As most of you know, Apple patched the exploits used in both the Corona and Absinthe jailbreak tools in the software update. And apparently, it's aware of exactly who is responsible for creating them...

WeeCloseApps: Kill and close apps directly from Notification Center

WeeCloseApps is a jailbreak widget that resides in Notification Center. Its purpose is built solely around closing and killing both running apps and backgrounded apps.

This tweak is basically the free version of another tweak called 'ActionSlider', which we will be covering for your shortly.

Once installed, a slider bar resides in Notification Center, and a slide to the left or to the right yields different actions depending on how you configure the tweak in the Settings app.
