iPhone 5 Announcement to be Steve’s Swan Song?

We know, you get it, the man resigned. But what you may not see are all of the ramifications of his early exit. There's a lot of people in the world with a lot riding on Apple's success, and their world just got a whole lot scarrier.

Sure, Tim Cook has the business-sense to keep Apple afloat. But he seems to lack Jobs' creativity and showmanship. Can you imagine him unveiling a new product?

As of right now, the iPhone is only available on two major wireless carriers here in the United States. AT&T, which was originally the sole carrier of the iPhone, and now Verizon both offer the device.

Rumors have been circulating over the past several months suggesting that Apple will finally extend the iPhone to both T-Mobile and Sprint this Fall, but so far there has been no official announcement.

Now, The Wall Street Journal has decided to chime in on the matter, and is reporting that a Sprint-branded iPhone is a lock for this October...

The Evolution of the iPhone [Infographic]

When Steve Jobs and company first announced the original iPhone, they said that they were going after 1% of the smartphone market. At the time, there were around 100 million smartphone sales globally, so 1% would have been one million units.

As most of you know by now, Apple has far exceded that goal. In the last quarter alone it shipped over 20 million smartphones. Not bad for only 4 years and 4 handsets into the market. But what's next?

Apple Preparing Cheaper 8GB iPhone 4 With iPhone 5 for End of September Launch

A new report from Reuters states that Apple is planning a cheaper 8GB version of the iPhone 4 to unveil alongside an iPhone 5 flagship device at the end of September. The iPhone 5 will look "largely identical" to the updated iPhone 4, but it will have a larger screen, better antenna and 8 megapixel camera.

Previous rumors were that Apple wouldn't launch a new iPhone until early October, with a possible announcement at the end of September. There have been whispers of two new iPhone models coming this Fall, and this "cheaper" 8GB iPhone 4 will clearly be targeted towards the cheaper mobile market.

More Evidence Points Towards iPhone 5 as Global Device

TechCrunch's Robin Wauters reports what we have been assuming for quite some time now: the iPhone 5 will be a global world phone, by essentially enabling you to roam on any network worldwide.

The report lists the mounting evidence, which backs up this earlier claim by Verizon CFO Fran Shammo, that the next iPhone would indeed have the ability to roam globally.

This is very good news for travelers, who won't have to worry about the hassle of no coverage in areas where only one type of service (CDMA or GSM) is available...

iPhone 5 Battery, Camera Lens, Audio Flex Cable Allegedly Leaked

As we get closer to the iPhone 5's release in September/October, expect part leaks to start flying off supply chains overseas. This report is no exception, with an overseas iPhone parts supplier called TVC Mall leaking several alleged components of the iPhone 5.

A total of 5 parts have been leaked, including the iPhone 5's battery, rear camera lens and headphone/earphone audio flex cable...

Today, Forbes is reporting that Apple is seeking field test engineers with an expertise in LTE technology. The job listing was discovered on the popular social network LinkedIn...
