NFC seen coming to the next iPhone

When a high-ranked Apple executive says Apple won't do something, expect quite the opposite. So when Apple's worldwide marketing chief Phil Schiller told the Wall Street Journal that Passbook, a new app in iOS 6, won't be a direct payment product, there was more to his words than met the eye.

We've also heard countless rumors involving an Near Field Communication NFC chip coming to the next iPhone to provide a hardware basis for secure contactless payments on the go. Apparently, recent code dumps that broke the taller iPhone news also indicate that NFC controllers are directly connected to the power management unit of the next iPhone...

TechCrunch: new iPhone confirmed to have 19-pin “mini” dock connector

Earlier this year, we passed along a report claiming that Apple was looking to ditch the 30 pin dock connector in favor of something smaller. It was said that we could see this new port as early as this year.

Since then, we've seen a number of purported "iPhone 5" part leaks that feature a noticeably-smaller charging port at the bottom. And now, TechCrunch says it has just confirmed the change...

Despite Tim Cook's vow to "double down on secrecy," we've seen a surprising amount of information regarding the next-generation iPhone in the past few weeks. We know its screen size, resolution, and even have a good idea of what it looks like.

Or do we? Perhaps the amount of data floating around is actually a sign that we don't know anything. Maybe everything we've seen to this point has been fake, or a misdirection. If so, this case manufacturer is about to throw away a ton of money...

Apple extends deal with Liquidmetal for another two years

Back in 2010, Apple acquired the rights to Liquidmetal Technologies' amorphous metal alloys. The deal essentially gave the Cupertino company exclusive rights to the material, along with the corresponding patents, through 2012.

Yesterday, it was discovered that Apple has recently elected to extend that agreement another 2 years. According to a new SEC (Security and Exchange Commission) filing, the Mac-makers now own the rights through 2014...

Last week, some amazing renderings of — what much of the tech world is assuming to be — the next generation iPhone surfaced on the net. They looked so good, in fact, that a lot of us wondered if they were the real deal.

But alas, they weren't. As we later found out, the images were just a gorgeous 3D art project by designer Martin Hayjek. And today, he's back with some even better looking renderings of the new iPhone in white...

Shocker: millions won’t qualify for iPhone 5 upgrade this fall

Do you own an iPhone 4S? If so, you and tens of millions of others like yourself in the United States and abroad won't qualify for a fully subsidized upgrade this fall. Blame it on the disparity between yearly iPhone cycles and carriers' policy of locking smartphone buyers with two-year contracts.

Apple's phone is enjoying stellar sales, moving 37.1 million units last holiday and 35.1 million last quarter, thanks partially to last summer's pent up demand.

The question is, will iPhone 4S owners - now locked into wireless service contracts and not eligible for fully subsidized upgrades - be willing to pay extra to obtain an early iPhone 5 upgrade this fall?

If you can't get enough of futuristic mockups like a holographic iPhone, this one's guaranteed to pique your interest.

It's viral now as clearly a lot of work has gone into rendering such a surprisingly realistic-looking depiction of a next-gen iPhone.

The basic premise definitely salivated our mouth and made us wish someone out there paid notice and engineered a device like this. Not like it's happening anytime soon, mind you, but perhaps Samsung's collective brain trust is crazy enough to take a shot at it?

After all, the South Korean conglomerate is working on phones and tablets featuring flexible displays so...
