We Play: Super Hexagon

The iPhone and iPad are serious gaming devices. If you ask me, games are one of the best perks about owning an iOS device. The problem is that, just like with virtually every other genre of app on the App Store, there's an abundance of games available and many of them can be quite terrible.

With that in mind, I've decided to start a new series showcasing some of the games available on iOS. Unlike a normal post, I'll actually add video along with commentary of myself playing the game. By doing this, you'll be able to better gauge whether or not the game is right for you.

I'll be doing this a lot with new releases, but I'll also dig back in my stash of previous gems that everyone should know about. The first game in this series is a game that's been available for quite some time now—the legendary Terry Cavanagh's Super Hexagon. This is far and away one of my favorite games for iOS, because it has the perfect mix of drama and replay-ability. Watch me play Super Hexagon after the break.

The Bureau – XCOM Declassified arrives in the Mac App Store

Publisher 2K Games released XCOM: Enemy Unknown on the App Store back in June, following the Mac edition which went live earlier in the year. Basically an iOS port of the popular turn-based tactical role-playing strategy, XCOM: Enemy Unknown has since seen a few updates bringing a new multiplayer mode and other goodies. Meanwhile, 2K Games has teamed up with developer TransGaming to bring you an all-new XCOM game for the Mac, The Bureau - XCOM Declassified.

Available now on the Mac App Store, this premium third-person tactical shooter borrows certain strategy elements from the classic XCOM titles, but is nonetheless a standalone game in its own right...

Strand review: stretch and bend your lines to connect the dots

Around this time of the year, we start to get too busy to spend too much time siting in front of our favorite video game, yet we still find ourselves standing in line doing nothing for extended periods of time. During the holiday season, casual games are a must-have for a gamer’s mobile device.

Strand is a casual puzzle game that is simple enough to not occupy too much of your brain, but complex enough to keep you coming back for more...

Assassin’s Creed: Pirates arriving next Thursday

Announced more than two months ago as coming before 2013 wraps up, Ubisoft's companion iPhone and iPad game to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag for consoles, called Assassin’s Creed: Pirates, will be available for download in the App Store soon.

The game will cost $4.99 a pop and is scheduled to launch next week, on December 5. From the looks of it, there seems to be a lot to be looking forward to in Assassin’s Creed: Pirates. I've included a nice teaser trailer which shows actual gameplay and naval battles right below...

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years now available on iOS

Following up on December 2012 release of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy V (which arrived back in May), publisher Square Enix has released a brand new game in the series. Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, now available for the iPhone and iPad, takes place seventeen years after the characters and events of its predecessor.

The game also includes some of the original characters along with new heroes such as Ceodore, the son of Final Fantasy IV‘s Cecil and Rosa. I've included a trailer and a couple more highlights after the jump...

Puzzle game Numerity asks, ‘What do you see in numbers?’

Do you remember those 3-D illusion posters that were a big hit in the late 1990s? The poster just looked like a bunch of dots, but if you looked past the dots, a three-dimensional image would form and your world would be totally redefined (well, maybe nothing that dramatic, but it was cool at the time).

Numerity is a puzzle game that uses a similar concept of taking a bunch of numbers that are cluttered together and turning them into a shape just by adding a bit of color to designated numbers…

DrawQuest is now available for iPhone, adds zoomable canvas and custom quests

4chan founder Chris Poole’s DrawQuest app landed on the iPad in February 2013, taking DrawSomething believers by surprise.

Similar to DrawSomething, DrawQuest taps your inner artist by issuing daily drawing challenges where you're asked to complete incomplete drawings. The catch: you're only allowed to use the tools provided. Novel concepts like DrawQuest and DrawSomething tend to blow up, fast.

DrawQuest is no exception - the app's amassed some pretty ardent following. Needless to say, fans have been clamoring for an iPhone version from day one and today Poole's little enterprise has finally delivered.

Yes, DrawQuest for iPhone (and iPod touch) is here and it's brought with it some new features, including pinch-zooming on your canvas and the ability to create and share your own drawing quests...

Call Of Duty: Strike Team, now with Time Attack, Atlas Mountains and iOS 7 controller support

Games publisher Activision released Call of Duty: Strike Team in the App Store with little fanfare in early-September. But fans of the genre have taken notice immediately, pushing the game to become the number one app in over 30 countries and prompting our own Lory to include Strike Team in her weekly apps/games round-ups.

Call of Duty fans will be delighted learning that Activision today issued a major content update which brings a new attack mode, a new combat zone and a few other tweaks. I was immediately sold on one particular feature: brand new support for the new iOS 7 controllers like Moga's Ace Power and Logitech's PowerShell...

Clumsy Ninja finally available in US App Store

It's been a long 12 months for NaturalMotion studios and its Clumsy Ninja game. After drawing oohs and aahs from the crowd at Apple's iPhone 5 event last fall, the title essentially disappeared, with no word on when or if it would be released.

That changed, though, a month or two ago, when Clumsy Ninja started showing up in international App Stores. And we're happy to say that this week, the game's finally landed in the United States App Store, and is now available for download...
