Evidence Surfaces in iOS 5 that Apple is Still Working on Maps App

I have to admit, after all the evidence we've seen over the last several months, I was a little surprised that we didn't see any kind of major improvements to the Map app in iOS 5. Apple has purchased multiple GPS software companies in the last few years, including PlaceBase and Poly9.

But even though there were no significant Map announcements at WWDC, there's still hope. Apple's developer's conference only gave us a "sneak peak" at 10 items from a list of over 200 improvements, so it's very possible that we may still see Maps get a revamp this fall...

China Now the App Store’s Second Largest Market

Distimo has released a new study that focuses on the iPhone's App Store development in Asia. The analytics company examined data from 14 different countries, including China, to determine the App Store's influence in the Eastern hemisphere.

The report's findings placed China as the second largest market for Apple's App Store, next to the United States. Interestingly, while many European countries are seeing decreases in App Store activity, countries like China are seeing exponential growth in App Store download volume.

MissedReminder: iOS 5-Style LED Flash Alerts for Missed Calls

Have you ever noticed on a BlackBerry that when there is a missed call or text, a tiny LED flashes to alert the user? That's certainly one feature I wish Apple would implement in future smartphone designs, as a missed call can go unnoticed for hours on the iPhone if it's not in use.

Apple halfway makes up for the missing feature in iOS 5 with the addition of LED Flash Alerts. The new option triggers the iPhone 4's camera flash to alert users of missed calls or text messages. There are Over a Million Unlocked iPhones on T-Mobile’s Network

We've heard some staggering statistics for the jailbreak community recently. Saurik, the mastermind behind Cydia, estimates that there are anywhere between 10 to 15 million jailbroken iDevices in the world.

The number of unlocked iPhone users is also perplexing. We did a story last month about China Mobile that suggested there were close to 4 million unlocked iPhones running on their network. How many unlocked iPhones do you think are in the U.S.?

Apple More than Likely to Lose Amazon Lawsuit, “App Stores” for Everyone

Most of you are probably aware of Apple's trademark lawsuit against Amazon. But if not, it's easy to catch up. The online retailer opened up a new app market earlier this year, entitled the Amazon Appstore for Android. Apple's legal team quickly filed a motion with the courts to ban the retailer from using their trademark.

Apple coined the term back in 2008 when they launched their infamous App Store, and they don't want customers confusing it with a 2nd rate offering. It looks like Apple is going to have to do better than that, as Bloomberg is reporting that the judge has stated that she will "probably" deny Apple's motion...
