Half a dozen new Kindle Fire tablets coming to challenge iPad

Confirming an earlier AllThingsD story, Staple CEO Demos Parneros told Reuters today that Amazon is about to unleash half a dozen new Kindle Fire tablets, including a brand new ten-inch model obviously engineered to take Apple's iPad head on.

The online retailer recently acquired 3D mapping startup UpNext, another indication that it means business when it comes to tablets. And of course, the company is also thought to be readying a smartphone of its own...

Proview doesn’t pay attorney fees in iPad suit, lawyers sue

China-based Proview recently took home a cool $60 million settlement in iPad trademark case which delayed the tablet's launch in China.

Despite the handsome payout, the bankrupt display vendor says it doesn't have money to pay its lawyers their legal fees accrued while fighting Apple over the iPad trademark.

Lawyers being lawyers, they took their former client to court, seeking 2.4 million dollars in legal fees. What goes around comes around, I guess...

Mediation talks fail between Apple and Samsung ahead of trial

Last week, Tim Cook met with top executives from Samsung Electronics to discuss the ongoing patent dispute between the two companies. The meeting was court-ordered, in a last-ditch effort to get the smartphone-makers to settle their differences ahead of next week's trial.

Unsurprisingly, the talks didn't go very well. A new report is out this afternoon claiming that the companies disagreed on "the value of each other's patents," and a settlement between the two sides is extremely unlikely to happen before the end of the month...

Doctor up screenshots with PreviewMaker

If you're looking to create awesome screenshots of your iPhone, you have a few options. You can either fire up something like Photoshop, or you can use a tool like Screentaker, which allows you to encapsulate your screenshots in an iPhone, or iPad frame.

Screenshots mated with the device from which they were taken, portrays a much more professional look in my opinion, and you'd be hard pressed to find an easier way to do this, than with PreviewMaker...

Developer forced to make Android game free due to rampant piracy

We've complained, on more than one occasion, about the high rate of piracy on iOS. It's not uncommon to see pirated copies make up 90% or more of an app's total download numbers. It's bad.

But apparently, it's even worse on Android. Popular mobile developer Madfinger Games says it has decided to make its Dead Trigger title free due to rampant piracy on Google's platform...

ClockWind speeds up your iDevice’s animations

It's sort of like putting a huge loud muffler on your car. Whatever makes you feel faster.

Indeed, ClockWind makes things seem faster, because it speeds up the UIKit animations on the iPhone. It seems fast, but it also feels disconcerting, if you ask me.

Here's a hint: your iPhone isn't any "faster" than it was prior to installing this tweak...

Department of Justice defends Apple e-book lawsuit

The US Department of Justice says it has received nearly 1000 public comments since it lodged its lawsuit against Apple and a number of major book publishers earlier this year. The suit claims that Apple worked in concert with the publishers in an effort to raise e-book prices.

The DoJ has responded to the comments today, and has strong words for both Apple and the accused publishers. Despite the pushback, the Department says that it has every intention to move forward with its e-book lawsuits and settlement talks as planned...

BetterCenter allows you to adjust the length of Notification Center

BetterCenter is a simple new iPad jailbreak tweak, which allows you to adjust the length of the Notification Center pane, both in landscape mode, and in portrait mode.

Extending BetterCenter's slider bars to their maximum extent, results in a full length Notification Center on the iPad, and we love the look of it.

Take a look at our video walkthrough of BetterCenter in action...

Apple to provide 30-pin dock adapter for new iPhone

With a number of recent rumors pointing to the next-generation iPhone utilizing a smaller, 19-pin dock connector, some folks have started wondering what they'll do with their collection of 30-pin accessories.

Well don't throw them away just yet. A new report is out today claiming that Apple plans to provide an adapter for the new iPhone's dock connector that will make it compatible with many current add-ons...

Russian hacker admits defeat in IAP breach

Alexey V. Borodin, the Russian hacker who made headlines with a tool which lets anyone steal extra content in apps, no jailbreak required, is admitting defeat following Apple's announcement that the in-app purchasing (IAP) exploit will be fixed in the shipping version of iOS 6 this fall.

In an unprecedented move, Apple gave developers access to a pair of private APIs in iOS, a temporary solution that effectively bypasses the hack. Borodin just publicly acknowledged that currently there is no way to circumvent Apple's band-aid fix in apps updated to take advantage of the private APIs...

iOS 6 Beta 3 finally lets you download free apps without Apple ID

We received several tips this past weekend that the latest iOS 6 Beta 3 which was released to Apple's registered developers last week finally does away with Apple ID requirement for free apps. Normally, when you download a free app from the App Store, Apple requires you to enter your existing Apple ID or create a new account.

This never made any sense to ordinary users: I can't tell you how many times my friends (some of whom only download free stuff) asked me if there was a way to drop that pesky requirement. It also doesn't support Apple's 'cut the cord' initiative that lets one set up and use an iOS device without a computer and iTunes...
