PSA: The palera1n jailbreak works on A9-A11 devices running Apple’s new iOS 16.5 & 15.7.6 firmwares

Apple on Thursday released iOS & iPadOS 16.5 for all of their latest devices, as well as iOS & iPadOS 15.7.6 for some of their older devices that can’t run iOS or iPadOS 16. These updates comprised of a small number of new features, but incorporated a wide array of security patches that will make future jailbreaks more challenging to achieve.

But all that aside, the palera1n team has some good news for A9-A11 chip-equipped device users, as it seems that the palera1n-c jailbreak tool is fully compatible with iOS & iPadOS 16.5, as well as iOS & iPadOS 15.7.6, right out of the box. The palera1n team made the announcement Thursday afternoon via the official Discord server:

Palera1n-c team members confirm that the jailbreak works on iOS 16.5.

This means that no updates to palera1n-c are going to be necessary to ensure compatibility with Apple’s latest firmware as was the case with iOS & iPadOS 16.4 and 16.4.1.

Because the palera1n-c jailbreak operates on the same hardware-based checkm8 bootrom exploit that the venerable checkra1n jailbreak operated on, there’s no way for Apple to patch the security vulnerability that makes this jailbreak tick. Apple can make small changes that interrupt the palera1n-c jailbreak’s methods, but the developers can quickly get around that with incremental updates following any major software updates that break the jailbreak process.

The palera1n-c jailbreak supports the following devices running iOS or iPadOS 15.x-16.x:

  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE
  • iPad (7th generation)
  • iPad (6th generation)
  • iPad (5th generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation, 2019)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch (2017)
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch (2016)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2015)
  • iPod touch (7th generation)

If you’ve never jailbroken your device with palera1n-c before, and you have a compatible device running up to and including iOS or iPadOS 16.5, then you can follow our step-by-step tutorial to get started.

The palera1n-c jailbreak can be installed in rootful or rootless fashion, however rootless appears to be the way of the future and the recommended way to jailbreak going forward as developers move forward the rootless dynamic following the release of Dopamine for A12-A15 chip-equipped devices running iOS & iPadOS 15.0-15.4.1.
