iOS 8 vs iOS 7

If you’re interested in downgrading your iOS device from iOS 8 back to iOS 7.1.2, you can still do so for a limited time. Obviously, your device must be capable of running iOS 7.1.2 in the first place, so devices like the newly released iPhone 6 and its larger brethren, the 6 Plus, do not qualify.

Downgrades are only possible when Apple is signing the firmware that you wish to downgrade to. Traditionally, Apple is fairly fast with its cutoff point, as it usually stops signing firmware that’s not the current release, in short order.

As of this post, Apple is still signing iOS 7.1.2, so if you wish to downgrade, you better act fast. Inside, we’ll walk you through downgrading to iOS 7.1.2 on an iPhone 5s, but the same rules apply to any device that is currently running iOS 8, but is capable of running iOS 7.1.2.

Step 1: Download the iOS 7.1.2 firmware for your device via our download page.

Step 2: Turn off Find My iPhone on your device if you have it enabled. Go to Settings → iCloud, and disable the Find My iPhone switch.

Step 3: Connect your device to a Mac with iTunes installed.

Step 4: Open the device page on iTunes, and hold the Option key while clicking the Restore button. Find the IPSW firmware file that you downloaded in Step 1, select it, and click Open.

Step 5: A pop-up box will warn you that the restore will delete all data from the device. If you are okay with the restore, click the Restore button. Wait until your device restores, and enjoy your iOS 7.1.2 firmware.

Again, this is valid for a finite amount of time. At any point in the coming hours, days, or weeks, Apple will stop signing iOS 7.1.2, and you will not be able to downgrade.

If you’re planning on downgrading, please let us know why, down below in the comments.

why i can’t downgrade my iphone in version 8.1 to 7.1.2 with using itune

Did you also realize that in addition to prevent iOS 8 upgraders to downgrade back to iOS 7, iOS7 users on any version prior to 7.1.2 can’t upgrade to that version. They MUST upgrade to iOS 8 and then of course they can’t turn back. Thanks Apple.

updated my iphone5 to IOS 8.1.2 that made it restart often..i don’t know what to badly needed..downloaded original IOS 7.1.1 but itunes returned “…cannot be restored because firmware file is not compatible”

    • Sandeep Roy

Cannot downgrade to 7.1.1 as it’s just not allowed by Apple.
Restart phone see how it works.
Reset ALL Settings & configure them again. You don’t lose any data.
Use the phone normally for 2/3 days and after 2 charge cycles phone will be fine as this is a major update.
Backup your phone to iTunes/iCloud and Restore from backup.
If you have doubts call Apple Support on toll free no. they help,

Jeff, last year I rolled back from 8.0 to 7.1.2 while Apple was still signing and it fixed the battery drain and lagging response time. When I thought about upgrading to 8.2 and contacted apple forum for advice, no one would answer my questions stating I had jailbroken my phone so the couldn’t help. Same goes for my contact at Apple. He would not respond to emails.
Did using the available download here really jailbreak my phone? I thought since Apple was still signing it wasn’t a jailbreak that I did, just a legit rollback. Now they’re up to 8.4 and I’m afraid to update my phone from 7.1.2 and also when I view info in iCloud it has Yosemite X as the operating system. In iTunes it shows IOS 7.1.2 for my backup.
Can I just download 8.4 through iTunes or do I have to restore as a new phone. Any help is greatly appreciated. I didn’t even know what a jailbreak was when I did this. Thank you for any advice and/or instructions anyone can provide.

Hello, I was trying your guidline above. But I got permanent connection error. I wanted to downgrade from 9.3.1 to 7.1.2 (something) on my iPhone 4s, because my wifi is grayed out. Upgrade was successful ;-(. Is there enother possibility without iTunes?
    Thanks for help.

You can’t downgrade to 7.1.2 only to 9.3, as Apple has stopped signing that version ages ago. You should check ipswDOTme to see what version you can downgrade to(will show in color green). Besides this article is dated 2014 😉
