Tutorial: How to Install the New Cydia for iOS 4.2

Cydia was recently updated to support Apple's updated API's in iOS 4.2. This particular Cydia update was quite the major overhaul, and there is no option available (yet) within Cydia to update to the newest version automatically.

Besides iOS 4.2 support, there are several long-awaited improvements in this version of Cydia.

The most noticeable improvement in this update is a huge performance boost throughout the whole application. Everything is faster. Once Cydia does the initial restructuring and downloading after you first install the update, you should notice an immediate boost in speed as you navigate the app. That means less of the dreaded loading wheel and more of actually accomplishing what you want to do...

Per Steve Jobs: AirPlay to Gain Increased Functionality in the Future

Chalk this up as likely one of the most obvious revelations to come out this week: AirPlay will be improved in the future.

On Sunday, Steve Jobs reportedly confirmed by e-mail that AirPlay would be receiving a few essential upgrades in 2011, including direct streaming from Safari and one additional feature that us iPhone users might find handy...

SBPhotoDial Places Shortcuts to Your Contacts Directly on Your Home Screen

Have you ever wished you could add contacts directly to your Home screen? Well, if you have, you're not alone, I think it's safe to say that everyone's pondered this possibility at least once.

But Apple surely isn't throwing consumers any bones when it comes to this feature, so leave it to the jailbreak community to come up with a solution, even if it doesn't work entirely as you may have hoped...

New Tweak Allows AirPlay Streaming from Any iOS App

AirPlay just got the jailbreak treatment. AirPlay (one of Apple's new technologies in iOS 4.2) allows streaming video to be pushed from any iOS device to an Apple TV.

AirPlay is only intended to allow streaming from the iPod and YouTube app, but this new jailbreak tweak opens up AirPlay possibilities to any playable media on an iOS device...

Create Your Own Fullscreen Web Apps With Fullscreen.me

Fullscreen.me is an interesting service that allows you to create iOS web apps that run in fullscreen mode. You can create little web apps through mobile Safari using Fullscreen.me's website interface.

This is nice if you have a lot of websites that you visit on your iPhone, and you don't want to have to navigate through Safari tabs to try to view them all. You can instead create little icons on your home screen of all your favorite sites...

First Look: Safari GridTab Tweak for iPhone

The developer behind BrowserChanger and Action Menu Voice is working on a new app called Safari GridTab, which basically shows your opened Safari tabs in a grid.

It looks like it's much easier to navigate through the tabs this way. Safari GridTab is still in development but it will hopefully be released soon...

Google Adds Improvements to Gmail in Mobile Safari

I can't say that I use Gmail in mobile Safari too often, considering that the native Mail App has great support for Gmail, but there must be some of you crazy folks out there that still do.

Fret not, Google has heard your cries for an improved mobile Safari experience, they've seen your tears, and they've felt your pain. As a result, an updated version of Gmail for mobile Safari is now live at last.

What new features can you expect to see? Well, too be honest, they're more on the aesthetics side of the house, meaning they don't add much in the way new functionality. Check inside for the details on not one, but two new improvements for Gmail on mobile Safari...

SkyF1re iPhone Browser Takes Minimalism to the Extreme

"A nice lightweight, quick little WebKit browser..." -- that's how the developer of the recently released SkyF1re Browser describes their iPhone browser for jailbroken iPhones. And while that's certainly an apt description, the browser is so incredibly lightweight, that it might just float away into utter obscurity.

Although one must keep in mind that this is version 1.0 of the app, I couldn't even get the address bar working on my iPhone.  No working address functionality on a browser? That's not a good thing.

Control Your Mac via Mobile Safari on Your iPhone

Ever wanted to control your Mac from your iPhone while still being able to fully customize everything you can do?  Sure there are remote control apps out there, but many of them require software on both the iPhone and the desktop (and are rarely free).

Brett Terpstra has developed a working PHP script called HomeControl that will let you control your Mac from within Mobile Safari.  The experience has a native iPhone look and feel and it mimics the iOS UI controls...

FullScreen for Safari Adds Multitouch Functionality to Your iPhone Browsing Experience

Even with plenty of browser alternatives out there, I always find myself going back to Safari.  There's just something aesthetically pleasing about Apple's stock browser that keeps me coming back, even though it's totally devoid of some basic features.

For this reason, whenever I hear about any tweaks that add additional functionality to Safari, I'm all over it like white on rice.  The latest tweak to come out of the jailbreak community is called FullScreen for Safari, and it packs quite the punch.

EnhancedTabs Adds Additional Functionality to Apple’s Aging Browser

The tagline in Cydia for EnhancedTabs is that it "Makes Safari's tabs much better." Despite the somewhat conceited nature of the app, I must agree.

If you're jailbroken and looking to add additional functionality to the iPhone's stock browser, this is a tweak that you're going to want to try. EnhancedTabs brings three features to the table that aim to, well, enhance your tabs...
