Apple Taps OmniVision to Provide 8MP Camera Sensors for iPhone 5

The time for Apple to announce a new iPhone at this year's developer's conference has come, and gone. The rumors of a delayed iPhone refresh rang true this week, as no new hardware was unveiled during the keynote.

While we're growing tired of these supply chain rumors, each bit of gossip helps to paint a picture of what Apple's next generation smartphone may look like. The most recent tidbit aligns with previous suggestions that the iPhone 5 will house a better camera...

iOS 5 Firmware Hints at Future iPhone and iPad Models

Since Apple unveiled iOS 5 at the WWDC keynote yesterday, developers have been diving into the software to discover the hidden secrets within. The latest development actually points towards future models of the iPhone and iPad.

As would be expected, there are code placeholders for the next gen iPhone, and there are also references for two future iPad models. Ladies and gentleman, start your rumor mills...

Our Expectations for WWDC 2011

On the eve of the 2011 World Wide Developers Conference, magic is in the air. The Apple rumor mill has been churning, and Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud are all confirmed topics of discussion for tomorrow's keynote. Steve Jobs himself will be presenting, and the industry eagerly awaits to see how Apple will revolutionize the market.

The iDB team has prepared a Q&A-style roundtable discussion with each of our opinions on what we expect from the WWDC keynote tomorrow. Read each of our thoughts and comments after the break!

Rumor: iPhone 4S This Summer With A5 Chip, 8MP Camera, GSM/CDMA Support, Integrated SIM

With WWDC right around the corner, the last, pre-summer iPhone rumors are coming in fast and strong. The latest one seems a little far fetched, but it does make some interesting claims about hardware announcements we'll see from Apple this year.

Instead of an iPhone release this fall, Macotakara claims that the 'iPhone 4S' will be released this summer, and that the iPhone 5 will be released in spring of 2012. The iPhone 4S will supposedly be a minor upgrade from the iPhone 4 (like the 3G/3GS), while the iPhone 5 will be a complete revamp. Sound crazy to you?

Will the iPhone Nano Look Like This?

Talk of a cheaper, perhaps contract-free 'iPhone Nano' has been circulating for several months now. With WWDC on the near horizon, and an iPhone announcement expected this fall, there's plenty of speculation surrounding Apple's next gen iPhone.

Will Apple release the typical, evolutionary upgrade to the current iPhone 4? Or will things get changed up with two new iPhone models released at once?

So The Leaked iPhone 5 Photo Might Have Been Taken With…An iPhone 5?

I'm ashamed that I didn't notice this detail before, but props to the eagle eyed Kurt178 and Appman over at iFans for noticing the details.

When you take a look at the leaked shot of what is purportedly an iPhone 5 back plate, it appears that it was snapped with an iPhone...just not any iPhone currently in production.

The phone's reflection shows what looks to be a camera opposite from the flash, incidentally, just like the item that is being captured on camera.

Apparently, some Photoshop magic was used in order to better highlight the device in the reflection, rendering it pretty easy to spot...

Rumor: iPhone 4S to be Shown Off at WWDC After All?

If you've been keeping up with the iPhone 4S and 5 rumors, you'll recall that almost all of the evidence so far has pointed to a later-than-normal refresh this year. From supply line checks to industry insiders, everyone is pegging the next-gen iPhone to launch in September.

Maybe that's just what Apple wants you to think. Rumor or not, this is the first bit of speculation we've seen in a while that points to a hardware announcement at Apple's WWDC event next month. Could it be true?

iPhone 5 to Get an 8MP Camera?

At this point of time, the question is not if the iPhone 5 will get an 8MP camera, but rather who is going to be the supplier. Earlier last month, Sony CEO dropped a bombshell by saying his company was going to work with Apple and provide them with camera sensors.

Today, DigiTimes is reporting that one of their "sources" claim that Largan Precision, a Taiwanese manufacturer of camera lenses for various phone makers is expecting a large order from Apple to supply them with 8 megapixels modules...

Another iPhone 5 Leak Points Towards a Separated Flash

It looks like we have another snapshot of an iPhone 5 component circling the web. These leaked photographs of next-generation iPhone parts have become very popular lately.

I guess it makes sense though. With so much evidence pointing to a September launch, it's logical that manufacturing companies just recently started receiving designs for the new device and are gearing up to start production...

France Telecom CEO Hints at “Smaller and Thinner” iPhone with Smaller SIM Card

In a recent interview, the CEO of French Telecom/Orange, Stephane Richard, dropped some hits towards a "smaller and thinner" iPhone 5 with a different SIM card design. Instead of the traditional method, Apple has apparently agreed with wireless carriers to support a smaller and more lightweight SIM for the next iPhone.

Practically, this smaller SIM card would make the iPhone thinner. There is also the possibility that such a SIM card could work in tandem with the rumored 'global device' that Apple could release this year.

iPhone 5 to Feature a Curved Glass Screen?

According to DigiTimes, Apple is looking into introducing curved glass screens in future iPhones. The technology isn't new, and Apple itself has been using this for their iPod Nano line for a while now, so they do have experience with the design and manufacturing process.

Because it is so expensive and risky to make curved glass screens, a lot of manufacturers simply don't do it. Instead of relying on manufacturers for that, Apple, who's sitting on a huge pile of cash, has been heavily investing in its own 200-300 glass cutting machines to be used by glass makers...

Expect iPhone 5 to Ship in September

As the industry tries to reach some sort of consensus on when Apple will release the next generation iPhone 5, another report affirms the growing possibility of a September launch.

Famed analyst, Gene Munster, has offered the most logical explanation to date for an iPhone 5 announcement this fall. We've already heard analyst after analyst claim varying ship dates and reasons for a certain time frame, but Munster's reasoning seems the most legitimate...
