Apple's upcoming News app will feature content from more than 50 publishers, reports Recode. That's up significantly from the 18 it had commitments from in June, when the app was introduced, suggesting that Apple has been busy these last few months promoting the new platform.

For those that missed the WWDC unveiling, the News app is a Flipboard-like application coming to iPhones and iPads in iOS 9. The goal of the app is to present users with curated news stories and other interesting content through a beautiful UI that makes the experience more enjoyable.

New Apple TV expected to launch in October for under $200

The next-generation Apple TV will launch in October for less than $200, reports 9to5Mac. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the outlet claims that company executives are still finalizing pricing, but the latest options call for a starting price of either $149 or $199.

Since this will be considerably more expensive than other streaming media devices on the market, 9to5Mac says that Apple plans to keep the current third-gen Apple TV around. Its more modest $69 price tag will serve as an entry-level product into the Apple TV line.

Twitter testing out dedicated News tab in mobile apps

Twitter is experimenting with a new "Featured News" tab in its mobile apps, reports BuzzFeed. The tab surfaces trending news items, which the social network hopes will keep users engaged.

"We're experimenting with a news experience on iOS and Android," a Twitter spokesperson told the publication. "We are continuing to explore new ways to surface the best content to users."

NYT Now for iPhone goes completely free, adds 1Password support and more

The New York Times newspaper this morning issued a sweet update to its dedicated news summarizing application, Now for iPhone. By far the biggest change in this would-be Flipboard killer involves breaking away from a $15+ per month subscription model in favor of making the app along with its content completely free.

Whether or not the move will help attract more readers remains to be seen. NYT arguably leads the charge in terms of quality newspaper content so going free is a much appreciated change in my book.

Scott Forstall is now producing a Broadway musical

Scott Forstall just announced that he has taken on a new project, and it doesn't have anything to do with tech. In his first-ever tweet, the former iOS chief said that he is co-producing the Broadway musical "Fun Home," and it is slated to open this Sunday.

Forstall's name doesn't appear to be mentioned on the Fun Home website, but a quick search reveals the show's Playbill, which lists both Scott and his wife Molly as producers. "This is Scott and Molly's first foray on Broadway after years in Silicon Valley."
