RedSn0w Untethered Jailbreak Updated [Fixes Native Apps Crashes]

Earlier today, the Dev Team released the beta version of their RedSn0w untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 (see our tutorial here). Like we reported, this untethered jailbreak comes with its fair share of issues, one of the most annoying being that some of the native apps would just crash.

While there are still a bunch of bugs to be worked out, the Dev Team updated RedSn0w to version 0.9.7b2, which fixes this issue where native apps like the app switcher or the iPod app would crash...

How to Untether Your iPhone 4.2.1 Jailbreak with RedSn0w

The long-awaited RedSn0w untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 was released earlier today by the iPhone Dev Team. As we mentioned before, it is still a beta version, which means it is very unstable and causes a few noteworthy bugs.

We're aware that some of you are true dare devils so we thought it'd still be a good idea to post a guide on how to untether your iPhone. This step by step tutorial will show you how to untether your iPhone 4.2.1 using RedSn0w. This only works for the iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch 4G...

Warning About RedSn0w Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1

The Dev Team released RedSn0w 0.9.7b1 this morning, an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1. When we first reported about this updated version of RedSn0w, we advised you not to use because it is still in beta, and most importantly, comes with a few issues worth mentioning.

We still think that you should hold off and be patient. A more stable version should be released soon. In the meanwhile, if you are curious about what problems you might encounter after "untethering" your iPhone, here are some of the issues that have been reported:

Download Redsn0w Beta for iOS 4.2 Untethered Jailbreak

The Dev Team has released their Redsn0w beta, dubbed Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 for iOS 4.2. We wanted to alert our readers, and at the same time provide a word of caution about the beta release.

To quote the Dev Team "This is a beta tester program. It’s not a general release!  Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!"

For that reason we recommend you hold off until the official release, especially if you rely on an ultrasn0w carrier unlock...

RedSn0w Untethered Jailbreak to Be Released This Weekend

Even though Comex said he wasn't sure he was going to be able to meet his Christmas deadline for an untethered jailbreak, it does seem we'll get a nice gift from the Dev Team after all. According to the Team's blog, an updated version of RedSn0w that implements a "backup plan" will be released and will deliver an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1.

Things seem to be rushed a bit as the Dev Team is looking for beta testers to run this RedSn0w untethered jailbreak and make sure every bug is taken care of before the public release...

‘Pull To Refresh Safari’ Makes it Fresh to Reload the Web

Pull To Refresh Safari is the latest jailbreak tweak to appear on the scene that adds Twitter App like refresh functionality to a stock iPhone app; in this case Safari. Not too long ago, Pull To Refresh Mail was released, which added the same unique refreshing capability to the stock Mail app.

Personally, I'm all for tweaks like this; it feels like a native part of the iPhone's interface, while at the same time modernizes apps that haven't changed much since they first debuted...

Jailbreak Drama: Who Leaked the SHAtter Exploit?

Looking at the drama going on between MuscleNerd and P0sixNinja on Twitter, I feel like I am watching a full season of the Young and the Restless. Quick heads up for those of you who didn't follow the whole conversation.

A few months ago, hacker pod2g found a bootrom exploit in iOS 4.0.1 which was quickly named SHAtter. Chronic Dev Team later started using SHAtter for their GreenPois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.1. Then GeoHot came in the game with a new exploit that he was going to use no matter what in his LimeRa1n jailbreak. At this time, Chronic Dev didn't have a choice but to put SHAtter on the side for later, and use GeoHot's exploit.

Everything was going fine until rumors started going around that SHAtter had been leaked...

Looks Like We’re Not Getting an Untethered Jailbreak for Christmas After All

Did MuscleNerd spoke too fast when he said last week that we'd get an untethered jailbreak for Christmas? It sure looks like it when reading this tweet Comex sent out a few minutes ago saying that he was going to miss his Christmas deadline..

At this point, I'm not sure whether Comex is working on an untethered solution or a full new jailbreak tool (jailbreakme?) One thing is sure though, we might not get anything from him this Christmas...

‘SB 2 Cloud’ is the Perfect iPhone Screenshot Companion

Being an iPhone blogger means having to take tons of screenshots of the iPhone's screen, and meticulously emailing them to myself so that I can use them in my articles. It's a drawn out process that I've been looking to streamline for quite some time.

Droplr was a great start, but it still required me to manually select the files I wanted to upload to the cloud, similar to email. Wouldn't it be great if every screenshot you took was automatically uploaded to the cloud with no human intervention?

Apparently the developers of SB 2 Cloud think so, because this jailbreak tweak accomplishes just that...

Next Version of RedSn0w to Allow Quick iPhone Untethered Jailbreak

If you decided to update to iOS 4.2.1 and jailbreak using RedSn0w, you most likely have a tethered jailbreak, which requires you to plug your iPhone in and kickstart it with RedSn0w every time you reboot. Very inconvenient.

We've had words for a while that the Dev Team was working on an untethered jailbreak, which MuscleNerd confirmed would be available before Christmas.

Today, the Dev Team's frontman gave us more information about this untethered jailbreak via a tweet in reply to someone asking if we'll have to fully restore the iPhone and run RedSn0w again in order to benefit from all the untethered goodness...

Bring the Awesome Look of TRON to Your iPhone

The recent movie release of "TRON: Legacy" has lots of geeks salivating over the amazing universe  of "The Grid." I went and saw the movie this past weekend, and I was blown away by the special effects used to create the world of the film.

Luckily, I've found some nice TRON iPhone wallpapers and an awesome theme for jailbreakers. After using these wallpapers and theme, your iPhone will look like it was designed by Kevin Flynn himself...

Mail Rules Aims to Add Structure to Your Inbox

Since I'm a Gmail user, all of my email is already organized on Google's servers before hitting my iPhone. This is done by means of filters, which are essentially rules in Outlook-speak.

Rules have been noticeably absent from the iPhone's cache of email features, but that's probably because most people have setups like I do, meaning that their email is sorted and filtered prior to being downloaded to the iPhone.

For those of you that don't have this luxury, Mail Rules -- a jailbreak tweak for iOS 3.2 and up -- aims to fill in the gaps. But does the tweak's shortcomings rule it out?
