Popular golf arcade game ‘Golden Tee’ coming to iOS this summer

Golden Tee fans rejoice, Incredible Technologies is bringing the popular arcade golf game to iOS this year. As noted by TouchArcade, the team has been quietly showing off a demo version of the game at this year's Game Developers Conference (or GDC).

For those of you not familiar with Golden Tee, it's the golf game you've seen in the corner of virtually every bar ever. It's an in-depth golf game with beautiful graphics, easy-to-learn controls and the arcade version utilizes a track ball for swing/ball direction.

On the Apple side of things, Unity 5 offers support for 64-bit computing and Metal, Apple's high-performance graphics framework aimed at game developers which can speed up graphics by a factor of ten compared to OpenGL.

The official mobile app of South by Southwest (SXSW), a set of film, interactive and music festivals and conferences that take place annually in mid-March in Austin, Texas, has been refreshed with a few new features.

Among them is an enhanced experience allowing your device to receive iBeacon notifications to see what's going on around you and who else is there. This year's show will feature the world’s largest deployment of iBeacons.

Google allegedly working on an iPhone app that’ll bring iOS compatibility to Android Wear

Google is ostensibly working on an iPhone app that will bring iOS compatibility to all Android Wear-driven smartwatches on the market. Google's Android-powered software platform for wearable devices launched a year ago without official support for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Mac devices. Word of a possible solution came Tuesday via 01Net and was passed along to us by French blog iPhon.fr.

Whichever way you look at it, making Android Wear compatible with the iPhone could help extend the market for Android-driven wearable devices to include Apple users, too.

About 720,000 Android Wear smartwatches were shipped in 2014, according to Canalys, the research firm. Various analysts estimate Apple's Watch could sell about ten or more million devices in 2015.

More than two decades following its 1992 debut on the the Genesis, SNES and arcades, Mortal Kombat, a video game franchise developed by Midway Games' Chicago studio, is about to go mobile with the impending release of Mortal Kombat X for iOS and Android, as first noted by Eurogamer.

Developed by NetherRealm Studios, the game will be published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which acquired the Mortal Kombat development team in 2011 and now owns the rights of the series.

Apple extends ‘Shot on iPhone 6’ campaign to billboards, newspapers, magazines and more

Apple’s latest ‘Shot on iPhone 6’ advertising campaign featuring crowdsourced iPhone photography from around the world is bound to reach massive audiences as the Cupertino firm started showcasing users' best photos found online out in the real world. Specifically, Apple is hanging billboards on skyscrapers around the world, plastering them on bus stops and train stations.

In addition, the company is using the photos in minimalistic ads run in major magazines and newspapers. All told, the ad campaign features 77 photographers in 70 cities across 24 countries around the world.

Apple reportedly planning Force Touch for 2015 ‘iPhone 6s’ lineup

The 2015 line of iPhones that are expected to launch this fall will feature the Force Touch input that is found on the Apple Watch, according to AppleInsider.

The Apple rumor publication, citing its own sources, says the next-generation handsets are internally codenamed "N71" for the 4.7-inch model and "N66" for the 5.5-inch version. They're said to keep the "iPhone 6s" naming convention like the iPhone 5s, and like with every "S" model release, will retain the same design as the previous version.

Google Maps update adds Local Guides, detailed POI/venue info and more

The Internet giant Google on Friday issued a refresh to its native mapping application for the iPhone and iPad, adding Local Guides and a couple other nice-to-haves.

A global community of the top reviewers on Google, Local Guides now appear in Google Maps 4.3 for iOS.

You can also add transit directions to your calendar.

Search has been improved, too, with the ability to search for event information for select venues, nearby businesses based on their address and even retrieve fun facts about popular points of interest.

Poll: thinness vs. better iPhone battery

Handset vendors stubbornly insist on making their gadgets thinner at a time when consumers have largely been craving for better battery life.

Apple, like no other company, is a poster child for the industry's obsession with thinness. Whenever a new iPhone comes out, its slim profile gets prominently featured and communicated in ads.

This point was especially brought home for me in a recent Wall Street Journal article which argues that “survey after survey reveals there is one thing consumers wish manufacturers would change about their gadgets” and it's better battery life.

Our poll today deals with this issue as we seek to learn whether you, our loyal readers, would rather have a millimeter or two thicker device with a stronger battery or as thins a phone as possible with a good enough battery.

iA Writer, the popular iOS/Mac app for focused writing, launches on Android

iA Writer, one of the best and most popular iPhone, iPad and Mac applications for distraction-free writing on the go, has been ported to Android and is now available for download in the Play store.

German developer Information Architects GmbH broke the news in a blog post earlier today. Like the iOS edition, iA Writer for Android is a paid download costing five bucks.

On Android, the app sports the familiar, polished interface with Focus Mode that highlights the current sentence being written. It also syncs with Dropbox and does Markdown — again, just like its iOS counterpart does.

Tweetbot developer lays out iOS and Mac app roadmap, makes Weightbot free

Today, developer Tapbots has shared some updates concerning state of development of its popular iOS and Mac Twitter client, Tweetbot, and the whole software lineup for that matter.

For starters, a completely redesigned Tweetbot 2.0 for Mac with Yosemite-friendly look and feel has been in the works for quite some time now. Tweetbot 4.0 for iOS is being readied as well.

“We are going to do a better job keeping our current apps up to date with each new OS release,” they promised. In addition, the company announced closing other projects in order to focus resources on upcoming (and long overdue) updates to Tweetbot for Mac and iPad.
