Battery showdown: Galaxy S8+ vs. iPhone 7 Plus

Samsung's top-of-the-line Galaxy handsets are typically outfitted with some of the best-performing batteries. That said, you could imagine our surprise when we learned that the battery in Samsung's flagship Galaxy S8+ performed worse than the cell powering Apple's iPhone 7 Plus, as per a new test carried out by review website PhoneArena.

YouTuber builds his own red iPhone 7 with black front

When Apple unveiled its new iPhone 7 (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition with vibrant red aluminum finish, some people who have been expecting an all-black front face, like yours truly, were left disappointed.

I'll be the first to admit that a red iPhone with a black screen would look way better than the white bezel.

YouTuber Danny Winget aka JerryRigEerything took it upon himself to build his own Frankenstein red iPhone with a black bezel using a full screen replacement, and the results look fantastic.

Camera+ updated with RAW saving improvements, 3D Touch Peek and Pop & more

Camera+, my favorite iPhone photography app, was updated this morning on App Store with new features putting more RAW power at your fingertips while adding support for Peek and Pop gestures in the app on 3D Touch-enabled devices like the iPhone 6s/7 series. Building on the previous update which enabled RAW shooting and editing, the new Camera+ version 9.1 includes new RAW options for saving and exporting images at the best possible quality.

iPhone 7 Plus (RED) gets unboxing treatment

YouTuber Marques Brownlee has managed to get his hands on one of Apple's new (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7 devices announced yesterday and has now posted an unboxing video on his YouTube channel. Mimicking the handset's white front face and its vibrant red aluminum casing, product packaging features a white box with red text and red iPhone graphics. The manual that's shipping in the box sports red branding as well.

Apple’s silicone and leather iPhone 7 cases are now available in six new colors

Aside from refreshing Apple Watch bands with half a dozen new Spring-themed designs, Apple also announced this morning that its family of silicon and leather cases for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus family now comes in six new Apple-designed colors that conveniently match the new Apple Watch bands.

Like with the new Apple Watch bands, Apple's silicone and leather cases can now be had in Azure, Camellia, Pebble, Taupe, Sapphire or Berry finishes.

Apple unveils iPhone 7/Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition

Apple this morning announced a special edition of its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in a beautiful new (PRODUCT)RED finish, with sales of the device contributing to the Global Fund to fight AIDS. The new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition with its red matte aluminum finish continues more than ten years of partnership between Apple and (RED). The special edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhone will be available to order online worldwide and in stores beginning Friday, March 24.

This minimalist case turns your iPhone jet black (or jet white)

Besides a redesigned camera bump, one of the main differentiator between the iPhone 7 and its predecessor was the new jet black colorway. It’s beautiful and sexy, but as Apple was quick to point out, it’s also incredibly prone to micro abrasions.

The solution offered is to put it in a case, which clearly defeats the purpose of having a jet black iPhone to begin with. And that's where the folks at Totallee come in with the Scarf, their incredibly light and thin case, now available in jet black and jet white.

Latest iPhone 7 ad is all about iMessage stickers

Apple on Monday via its YouTube channel shared a brand new television commercial for iPhone 7, titled “Sticker Fight”. Much like its September 2016 “Balloons” ad, the most recent 60-second video takes another iOS 10 iMessage feature to the real-world: sticker packs. “Say it with stickers on iPhone 7,” reads the tagline. Apple also created a new App Store section where you can download all of the stickers featured in the ad.

Alto makes a top-contending leather case for most iPhone models

Over the last few weeks, we have shown you a number of the top leather case brands for iPhones, but another that we feel deserves attention is Alto.

Hand-crafted with fine Italian leather, Alto cases are subtly formed out of what feels like surreal perfection. If you’re one to judge products closely, and every bit of quality matters to you, then Alto’s attention to detail is likely to impress.

Google Maps gains 3D Touch place previews

Last week, I whined about Google dragging its feet when it comes to implementing support for important iOS features, like 3D Touch, in apps such as Gmail. Other iPhone and iPad apps from Google have been more aggressive in adopting 3D Touch features, including Maps. In the latest update, Google Maps was bumped to version 4.28 and now allows users who have an iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus to press places on the map to get quicker access to popular actions.

Apple looking into widely circulated video showing iPhone 7 Plus catching fire

Earlier this week, Brianna Olivas posted a video showing her iPhone 7 Plus spontaneously catching fire, resulting in a partially melted device. Soon after, the video went viral and has thus far accumulated more than 1.2 million views.

The video has been retweeted more than 26,000 times and liked by more than 27,000 accounts, prompting a response from an Apple spokesperson which said in an official statement to Mashable that the company is looking into the incident.

17 months later, Gmail gains a single 3D Touch shortcut

Google today refreshed its mobile Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch on App Store, adding very limited 3D Touch support nearly a year and a half after Apple first brought pressure sensing to iPhone's display with the September 2015 release of iPhone 6s.

Owners of the iPhone 6s/7 series can now press Gmail's icon to quickly compose a message, but that's about it. Thank you, Google, but seriously?

In my view, Google doesn't really have a clue how to properly build 3D Touch gestures into Gmail in a manner that would save users time and boost their productivity.

The app still lacks Peek and Pop gestures., but we'll get those next year, right?
