Apple to finally make shift to IGZO displays next year

According to a new report, upcoming iPads and MacBook laptops should feature significantly better battery life thanks to their use of IGZO display panels. The technology, which uses indium gallium zinc oxide, was co-developed by Sharp and Semiconductor Energy Laboratories.

Apple has long been rumored to adopt the use of IGZO display panels in its mobile products, but production issues and other barriers have prevented this from happening. But if today's news holds true, that could change as early as this year thanks to supply chain advancements...

Facebook app updated with new icons for verified accounts and more

Facebook has posted a small update for its iOS application this afternoon, bringing the mobile client to version 6.3. The update only brings about a handful of improvements, but one of them could have major implications for the social network.

New in version 6.3 are blue check mark icons for verified accounts—similar to what you see on Twitter. This makes it easier to find pages of celebrities, public figures and brands that have been officially confirmed and authenticated by Facebook...

iPad-bashing is becoming the recurring theme for Microsoft as the once dominant force in computing struggles to reclaim its relevancy in the post-PC world. Nowhere is this more evident that in Microsoft's inability to hit the ground running with Windows 8 on tablets.

With a few notable exceptions, you can tell an also-ran has run out of ideas when it puts together a television commercial advertising its contender against the industry leader.

Sometimes the strategy of piggy-backing on the top dog's popularity can do wonders (case in point: Samsung), but often times it just backfires. The latter appears to be happening with Microsoft's anti-iPad ads. I'll let you be the judge of that: the latest iPad-dissing 30-second spot sporting two baseball scouts is below the fold...

Plants vs. Zombies 2 lands in Australia and New Zealand App Stores

Good news this afternoon for those looking forward to the highly anticipated Plants vs. Zombie sequel. Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time has started hitting App Stores around the world, despite EA's warning that the game wouldn't make its July 18th deadline.

Don't get too excited though. Apparently, today's release is just a limited soft launch to help the developers fine-tune the game's new free-to-play experience. For now, only folks in Australia and New Zealand (or with iTunes accounts in either country) can download it...

Popular rating and review service Yelp has posted an update for its iOS application today, bringing the app to version 6.9.1. The update only really includes one new notable feature, but it's a big one: the ability to order food without leaving the app.

That's right, in the new version of Yelp, you can actually order food for pickup or delivery—provided the option is available. So if you're browsing the app, and come across a restaurant review that makes your mouth water, you can order it instantly...

There are several key take-aways from a new report showing mobile advertising is exploding, set to surpass $9 billion in 2013. Despite a developed world saturated in smartphones, services for those devices continue to grow by leaps and bounds. Additionally, as we touched on Monday with the incredible success of Candy Crush Saga, the freemium app concept is red hot.

Such apps gain their popularity by being free up front, but earn their keep either through in-app purchases or advertising. According to the report by IAB and IHS, search accounts for 53 percent of mobile ad revenues, crystallizing what I've always thought: Google did not create Android out of some magnanimous gesture, but to keep ahead of the advertising curve...

Deus Ex: The Fall coming to iOS this Thursday

Deus Ex fans will be happy to hear that Square Enix and its development subsidiary Eidos Montreal have just announced that the latest iteration of the popular franchise, 'Deus Ex: The Fall,' will be arriving in the App Store this Thursday, July 11.

The game will launch exclusively on the iPhone and iPad, and its story line will take place after 'Deux Ex: The Icarus Effect' novel, which acted as a prequel to the nanopunk/cyberpunk franchise. And yes, we have a gameplay trailer after the fold...
