AT&T may be close to launching its shared data plans, CEO hints

According to a new report, AT&T, the nation's second-largest carrier, could in fact be close to launching its shared data plans, as rumored. The semi-official hint was dropped in a comment made by AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega who described himself as being "very comfortable" about his company offering shared plans in the near future.

The remark came in an interview on the sidelines of the CTIA Wireless trade show. It's a 180-degree turn for the executive, who just a few months ago was unsure about shared family and data plans, citing complicated IT and billing issues...

Apple says it’s investigating multi-user support for the iPad

Ever since Apple unveiled the original iPad, consumers have been clamoring for multiple user support. Such a feature would allow users to setup individual profiles with custom wallpapers, preferences, and other settings.

The jailbreak community has tried to fill this void with tweaks like iUsers. But without iTunes support, among other issues, they've failed to make much of an impact. Luckily, it appears that Apple is working on the issue...

A few moments ago, Apple started pushing out iOS 5.1.1 to compatible devices. The update doesn't appear to bring any new features, but it does include a handful of bug fixes and other improvements.

While we've already confirmed that A4 devices running the new firmware can be jailbroken, that doesn't mean you should update. In fact, those of you with with an A5(X) device should steer clear of it...

DisplayMate CEO says Apple settled for Plan B with new iPad

CNET is out with a new report this week, which highlights some interesting comments made by DisplayMate's CEO Raymond Soneira. The company is in the video diagnostics business, calibrating and testing displays for manufacturers.

Anyways, according to Soneira, the iPad that Apple unveiled earlier this year was actually Apple's "Plan B" for the product. It seems that the company's "Plan A," a slimmer, lighter tablet, required technology that just wasn't ready in time...

AT&T unveils new iOS device-connected home automation service

Last night, AT&T unveiled a new home automation and security service called Digital Life. The carrier describes the service as one that will give users "unparalleled control and security of their home using any web-enabled device."

The Digital Life system is integrated into the home via Z-Wave, a popular wireless protocol, and can control a number of connected utilities including cameras, door locks, thermostats, window sensors, and appliances...

Apple appeases Proview with a settlement figure

For months, lawyers for California-based Apple and bankrupt monitor vendor Proview have been trying to negotiate a way out of a high-stake trademark dispute which has been holding back the launch of the new iPad in the 1.33 billion people China market.

According to the latest update out from China’s official government newswire Xinhua, Apple has now put a dollar value on their settlement offer to Proview, finally moving the ball forward...

iPad text editing concept comes to life thanks to this jailbreak tweak

When Cody posted about Daniel Hooper’s iPad keyboard demo, we had no idea that it would be as popular as it has turned out to be. Thousands of retweets later, the public has spoken out against how terrible the iPad's editing situation is. I think John Gruber summed it up best when he noted that the iPad was a great for typing, but poor for editing.

The iPad keyboard demo video was created with the hopes that Apple would respond and implement something similar in the upcoming version of iOS. There's even instructions included on the video for submitting a bug report to Apple.

Well, Apple may not listen, but someone else did. Indeed, the jailbreak community has responded in a big way. Introducing SwipeSelection — a usable realization of the original iPad concept video...
