No, lawyers didn’t design Galaxy S III, Samsung design boss says

When Samsung introduced its third-generation Galaxy S smartphone earlier this month, folks immediately took to Twitter, opining how the handset was "designed by lawyers" in a nod at Samsung's ongoing legal feud with Apple over alleged copying of the iPhone's hardware design and software features.

Instead, the phone that was "inspired by nature" and "designed for humans", as the tagline has it, fits in Samsung's five-year redesign plan and went through hundreds of iterations before they settled on a final design....

Ferrari CEO had sit-down meetings with Apple’s boss and heads of Google

Don't hit the comments yet, this is nothing like the false Valve rumor. A surprising report straight from Ferrari's website has it that Apple CEO Tim Cook along with heads of Google sat down for a two-hour chat with Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo.

Remarking Cooks' "openness and availability", the car maker wrote that the sit-down meeting occurred during di Montezemolo's trip to Silicon Valley last week, where he also gave a speech at Stanford University.

What did the two men talk about if not world-class industrial design and their common penchant for creating great products with the utmost attention to detail?

Ferarri wouldn't reveal the agenda of the two-hour face-to-face meeting with Cook, but they did state the obvious - that the car maker and the iPhone maker share the same "maniacal attention to technology, but also to design"...

Student behind awesome logo tribute to Steve Jobs lands Coke ad gig

The name Jonathan Mak Long may not mean much to you, but you've probably familiar with the above image he put together shortly after Steve Jobs passed on October 5 of last year.

The unique tribute to Apple's late CEO cleverly combines the Apple logo with Jobs’ familiar silhouette. The image went viral, earning the young Hong Kong student of design Internet fame and recognition.

Matter of fact, his recognition was so global that he surfaced on the radar of advertising agency Ogilvy China, which contracted him to design Coca Cola's new social campaign...

Apple’s design guru Jony Ive shortlisted as a British Visionary Innovator

It's nominations time for Apple today. First we learned that Time magazine included Apple CEO Tim Cook on its annual list of 100 Most Influential People in the world and now a word has reached us that the company's design guru Jonathan Ive has been nominated for the prestigious British Visionary Innovator award by the UK's Intellectual Property Office.

The competition aims to celebrate innovators who earned fame by developing innovative products, services or designs, in in celebration of World Intellectual Property Day 2012...

Confirmed: French designer Philippe Starck working on Apple Store design

The Applesphere is going crazy this morning after French designer Philippe Starck revealed in an interview with Le Figaro that he's been working on a revolutionary project with Apple, a project that should see light of the day in 8 months.

The first thing that comes to mind of course is the Apple TV set that has been feeding the rumor mill for a few months now. I believe everyone has been reading too much into Starck's interview, and we actually got a confirmation earlier today that he is not working on designing a product for Apple.

So if he's not designing the next iPhone or the Apple TV set, what relationship does Philippe Starck have with Apple?

One could easily opine there are only so many ways to design a tablet or a smartphone. The argument has its merits and isn't far from truth. With today's mobile gadgets increasingly becoming basically a piece of glass framed by a bezel of sorts, the question of who's copying who gets muddied.

As you know, Apple filed the first in a series of “look-and-feel” lawsuits against Samsung in April 2011 over the design of the iPhone and iPad, forcing the South Korean consumer electronics conglomerate to fire back with infringement allegations of its own.

As both companies remain entangled in a complicated web of lawsuits in courts around the world, Samsung Mobile’s vice president of design Lee Min-hyuk has gone on the record to say he did not rip off the iPhone when designing the original Galaxy S smartphone...

It's fair to say that Apple's iPhone has turned a few heads since its original release in 2007. The first iPhone was obviously a game changer, bringing glass-fronted, multitouch phones to the masses. The iPhone 4 was, and still is, one of the best-looking phones around.
