Joe Dever’s Lone Wolf is Apple’s new Free App of the Week

If last week's Free App of the Week - Lucas Zanotto’s alphabet and math learning app called Drawnimal - wasn't your cup of tea, worry not as Apple refreshes its ongoing App Store promotion every Thursday.

Today's obviously the day a new Apple-curated app goes temporarily free for a week. Released by publisher Bulkypix, Joe Dever's Lone Wolf is a half gamebook and half action role-playing game based on the works of Joe Dever.

The author himself was involved in this game from the get-go, working with the studio to adapt the storyline so it fits with the original continuity. In addition to a brand-new story, Lone Wolf features great graphics, a new combat system, non-linear gameplay, lock-picking mini games, the dynamic turn-based combat system and lots more.

Lone Wolf is available free until next Thursday so best thing you grab it now before it goes back up again to its normal asking price of five bucks a pop...

If you visit a Microsoft Store today and bring your iPad with you, Microsoft may give you a free one-year subscription to Office 365, a $99 value.

Following yesterday's release of Office for iPad with native Excel, Word and PowerPoint applications, the Windows giant's retail stores are now promoting the apps by giving away a 1-year Office 365 subscription to the first 50 people who turn up at the door and bring in an iPad with them.

If you don't have the time to visit your nearby Microsoft Store or there's no store in your area, Amazon is now offering a discounted annual Office 365 subscription for $67...

Drawnimal goes free as Apple’s latest Free App of the Week

It's Thursday, and this can only mean one thing: the awesome Darklings game goes back up to its regular price as Apple gets to bring another iOS application down to $0, as part of the App Store's ongoing Free App of the Week promotion.

Today's free app: Lucas Zanotto's Drawnimal. If you have children or a very young brother/sister, Drawnimal is the perfect way to teach them the alphabet and at the same time get them excited about art.

Designed to help kids learn to think out of the box, the app ingeniously puts up a fun image of an animal on the screen, requiring your kid to follow the prompts and actually draw around the device that's sitting on a piece of paper.

Drawnimal will be free until next Thursday so grab it now in the App Store before it slips your mind...

Ridge Racer Slipstream goes free until next Thursday as Apple’s Free App of the Week

Today, like any given Thursday, Apple is refreshing its Free App of the Week promotion by making a new iOS tittle free for the next seven days.

Last week's promotion brought us the free download of Mildmania's Darklings [review], a gesture-driven endless atmospheric adventure game that incorporates visually enticing Noire-style graphics akin to Limbo and Badland.

Today, Namco Bandai's Ridge Racer Slipstream has gone free as the App Store's new Free App of the Week.

Normally a $2.99 download, but now available free in the App Store until next Thursday, Ridge Racer Slipstream recreates this ultimate arcade racing franchise on your iPhone and iPad with pretty graphics, Career and Arcade game modes, twelve beefy cars with plenty of horse power, over a hundred racing competitions across six Grand Prix series, real-time multiplayer and lots more...

Crazy Taxi goes free ahead of upcoming sequel, Crazy Taxi: City Rush

This past Friday, games maker Sega flagged down a Crazy Taxi sequel, dubbed Crazy Taxi: City Rush. As part of the announcement, the original Crazy Taxi for the iPhone and iPad has gone free in the App Store for a limited time. This is free in a true sense of the word - there are no in-app purchased to spoil the fun whatsoever! Crazy Taxi is based on the hugely popular Dreamcast classic and if you haven't played this game yet, I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try.

It's a title unlike any other. I mean, what other game lets you hurdle off parking garages, barrel through traffic-packed streets and perform crazy combo and stunts as you attempt to scare up the most fares? As a bonus, Crazy Taxi is packed with humor and you can't beat the fun factor...

Apple offering refurbished iPad Airs starting at $419

Folks in the market for an iPad Air will be happy to hear that Apple is now offering refurbished versions of the late-model tablet in its web store. You can find them in the 'Refurbished and Clearance' section listed at the bottom of Apple's online store landing page.

It looks like both 16GB and 32GB [Wi-Fi only] iPad Airs are available, in either Space Grey or White, with 3-5 day shipping estimates. And with the 16GB models starting at just $419—these are some of the lowest price we've seen on these tablets in recent months...

Darklings goes free until next Thursday in Apple’s App of the Week promo, grab it now

There have been some justifiable complaints lately among our commenters about the value, or the lack of it, in Apple's ongoing Free App of the Week promotion. Indeed, Apple's last few picks have been - and I'm putting it mildly - less then stellar.

Just a few examples: Wonderkind's Tiny Firefighters, Sega's Go Dance and Square Enix’s Mini Ninjas. Right.

That being said, you most definitely won't want to miss this one. Created by Mildmania and built on the Unity engine, Darklings was released last November to some rather glowing reviews (currently, a 4-star rating in the App Store) and has since gone to win several awards for its mechanics and interesting concept.

The universal app normally costs 99 cents and is now available free of charge until next Thursday, courtesy of the App Store's Free App of the Week promo.

Darklings is a gesture-driven endless atmospheric adventure game incorporating visually enticing Noire-style graphics (think Limbo or Badland) that puts you in the world of Lum as he tries to save the light. You'll be traveling through forests and caves battling darklings as you try to bring light back to the world.

What do I mean, Darklings is a heavily gesture-driven game? Well, you're mostly drawing various symbols in order to posses and purge your enemies. Read on...

‘Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame’ named IGN’s Free Game of the Month

Good news gamers, IGN has named Ubisoft's 'Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame' its Free Game of the Month. This is one of the first times that the game, which normally retails for $2.99, has ever been made available at no cost.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame originally landed in the App Store in 2013. It's the follow up to Ubisoft's Prince of Persia Classic remake with new controls, a new combat system and more...

Walmart drops price of 16GB iPhone 5s down to $119, 5c to $29

Not to be outdone by Best Buy, Walmart has launched a new iPhone promotion this week. The national retailer can now beat the electronics dealer in price on the entry level models of both the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c by up to $30.

The sale knocks the 16GB iPhone 5s down to $119, and its 5c counterpart down to just $29. Obviously, both of these prices require that you sign a two-year contract with a carrier, but otherwise there are no gift card or trade-in stipulations...

Sega’s Go Dance goes free as Apple’s App of the Week

It's Thursday and those who frequent iDownloadBlog know what that means as the App Store editors get to chose a new app to go free for the next seven days.

After slashing Tiny Firefighters to zero bucks last Thursday, that interactive app/book/game for kids has now gone back up to its regular asking price of $2.99. Not to worry - Apple's already named Sega's Go Dance the App Store's new App of the Week.

Launched last September and normally selling for $1.99, Go Dance was named one of the App Store's Best Of 2013 games and it's easy to see why: the game uses advanced motion-capture tech to turn your device's FaceTime camera into a motion sensor of sorts that picks up your movements while imitating avatars dance on screen.

Movements are recognized and scored in real-time and you really have to see it for yourself to fully appreciate the effect. What are you waiting for? Hit the App Store and grab your free copy of Go Dance now, go, go, go!

Best Buy offering $150 gift card to iPhone users trading up to 5s

Folks looking to score an iPhone 5s on the cheap may want to check out your local Best Buy store. I know it feels like we're saying this on a weekly basis now, but the retailer is once again holding a sale on Apple's most popular handset.

This time around, Best Buy is offering a minimum of a $150 gift card for folks looking to trade-in an iPhone 4s or 5 for a new iPhone 5s. And between that and its current $50 off promotion, you could easily score a 16GB model for just $1...
