Intel has reportedly secured orders for a ‘significant portion’ of iPhone 7 cellular modems

Chip giant Intel has secured orders for a “significant portion” of cellular modems on Apple's upcoming iPhone 7, according to a note CLSA Securities analyst Srini Pajjuri sent to clients, a copy of which was obtained by NDTV.

The current iPhone 6s generation uses Qualcomm's MDM9635M LTE Cat. 6 cellular modem and the previous-generation iPhone 6 series is outfitted with Qualcomm's MDM9625M modem so if this particular analyst is right, Qualcomm is set to lose some serious money should Apple dual-source cellular modems for the next iPhone.

Kommute for iPhone downloads websites for offline use and is better than Safari’s Reading List

Today’s websites are big, even more so taking into account that scripts from ad networks continue to gobble up data long after actual website content has been retrieved.

One valid approach to reading news involves adding articles you want to read later to Safari’s Reading List, but that will download each saved webpage to every device that has Safari enabled in Settings → iCloud.

A nicely done iPhone app called Kommute from developer Red Brick Labs might be a far better solution for those people who are eager to download their favorite websites in order to read them on the go, or when they’re not on Wi-Fi.

With Kommute, you just add any URL and the app intelligently fetches home page content along with deep links, for you to browse later. From my brief hands-on time with Kommute, I liked the app and the fact that it works as advertised.

T-Mobile is offering 4 lines of unlimited LTE for $150

T-Mobile has just made its existing Family Match promotion a little more tempting. As was announced this morning, the carrier is offering data-hungry families up to four lines of unlimited LTE data for just $150 per month for the entire family, which works out to $37.5 per line.

“Now get 2 or more lines of Unlimited 4G LTE for the price of a 10GB plan, or 10GB for the price of 6GB,“ teases the carrier. And for a limited time, T-Mobile's customers on a Simple Choice Family plan can get a fourth line at no additional charge.

AT&T resurrects unlimited data but only for DIRECTV or U-Verse customers

United States carrier AT&T on Monday announced a brand new unlimited data plan since removing that option a few years ago, but there's a catch: you have to be using the carrier's DIRECTV or U-Verse service.

According to the fine print, the new $100 per month plan is limited to smartphones. But what about those who'd like to take advantage of it on an iPad?

Well, they'll have to pay an additional $40 per month to add a tablet device or another smartphone to the plan, or fork an additional $10 to add a smartwatch to the service.

Intel has 1,000 engineers working on integrated LTE modem for iPhone 7

According to a report this weekend from VentureBeat, chip giant Intel has assembled a team of 1,000 engineers who are working hard on adapting its LTE modem for an 'iPhone 7.'

The move potentially indicates a major loss for Qualcomm, which supplied LTE modems for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus and previous iPhones. Intel's lauded 7360 LTE modem chip is being reworked for an iPhone, the story asserts.

Moreover, VentureBeat claims that Apple could, for the first time ever, embed the modem chip into its in-house designed A-series system-on-a-chip, resulting in an even tighter component integration.

How to play Apple Music high quality streams on cellular

Apple Music on iOS includes an option to stream your music at high bitrates over a mobile data network at all times. As you know, Apple Music defaults to high-quality streams on Wi-Fi.

With this toggle, you can control your cellular data usage by enabling or disabling high bitrates when streaming or downloading music over your carrier's cellular data network.

Leaked iPhone 6s logic board shows Qualcomm MDM9635M chip for up to 300Mbps LTE speed

Apple's next iPhone should double LTE download speeds from a theoretical maximum of 150Mbps on the present-generation iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus up to 300Mbps on the next-generation 'iPhone 6s' and 'iPhone 6s Plus,' according to a purported logic board leaked by 9to5Mac.

A photo of the alleged 'iPhone 6s' logic board shows a chip identified as the MDM9635M module from Qualcomm, part of its 'Gobi' modem platform.

T-Mobile enforces 21GB soft cap on Simple Choice plans ahead of tomorrow’s Un-Carrier Amped event

As reported by the TMoNews blog, Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Mobile, the nation's fourth-largest wireless carrier, has introduced a soft cap on data usage for its Simple Choice customers in the form of 21 gigabytes of high-speed 4G LTE cellular data. Exceeding this monthly allotment won't incur additional charges, but your speed may be throttled during periods of network congestion.

Previously, T-Mobile would specifically throttle only the three percent of its top data-hungry subscribers. With today's change, other users may see their speeds temporarily dropped after exceeding 21 GB of data usage during a billing period.

Cellular Continuity allows for phone calls on iPads even when your iPhone is off

Last week, it was reported that cellular Continuity would be making its way to iOS 9. The first carrier to support cellular Continuity is T-Mobile, which is unsurprising; it was the first to adopt Wi-Fi calling on iPhone as well.

Cellular Continuity allows you to use the Continuity features that debuted with iOS 8, features such as the ability to answer phone calls destined for your iPhone on Macs and iPads, without needing the involved devices to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

That means that you'll be able to leave your iPhone at home, and still receive phone calls on your iPad or other valid device while away from home and connected to the Internet via cellular or Wi-Fi.

But it goes deeper than that. After testing out this new feature on the iOS 9 beta, the Continuity features appear to be truly bound at the cellular network level. In fact, I could receive phone calls on my iPad while my iPhone was completely turned off. Watch our video demonstration for more insight.

Carrier Settings Update: what it is and how to check for it

From time to time, you might see a Carrier Settings Update message pop up on your iPhone, saying that new settings are available, and asking if you would like to update them now. Admittedly, this message is somewhat cryptic, and doesn't give you any information regarding what's included in the update or where it's coming from. Maybe even worth, I've had a friend ask me once if his iPhone got hacked as the message looked suspicious to him. In this post, we'll tell you more about carrier settings updates, what they are, and how to check for them.
